Rating: 4.53
Based on 79 Owner Reviews â–¶
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Dodge Charger marked the return of a legendary nameplate as a four-door sedan. Produced from 2006-2010 in this generation, it brought muscular styling to the family sedan market. Key trims included the SE, SXT, R/T, and SRT8. Its popularity stemmed from its bold design, powerful engine options (especially in the R/T and SRT8), and relatively affordable price point. New, prices ranged roughly from $23,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2007 Dodge Charger offers a compelling blend of performance and practicality. Its powerful engine options, particularly in the R/T and SRT8, deliver exhilarating acceleration (emotional). The spacious interior provides comfort for passengers and cargo (practical). While reliability can vary, it offers a decent value proposition in the used car market (practical).

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2007 Dodge Charger include potential electrical issues, especially with the early model years. Suspension components, such as ball joints and tie rod ends, can wear out. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. The fuel economy, especially with the larger engines, is not stellar.

What Problems Does the 2007 Dodge Charger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Dodge Charger often involve electrical issues, particularly with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause a variety of problems, including stalling, difficulty starting, and malfunctioning accessories. Suspension issues are also common, with reports of worn ball joints, tie rod ends, and control arm bushings leading to alignment problems and poor handling. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with road salt usage during winter months. Interior components, such as the dashboard and door panels, can be prone to cracking or fading over time.

Recalls have been issued for various issues, including problems with the fuel system, airbags, and antilock braking systems. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the potential for high repair costs as the vehicle ages. Components like the transmission and engine can require significant maintenance or repairs after high mileage. The 2006 and 2007 model years are generally considered to have more reported issues compared to later years in this generation. Regular maintenance and careful inspection are essential for maximizing the lifespan of a 2007 Dodge Charger.

How long will the 2007 Dodge Charger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Dodge Charger can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service with consistent care. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. Weaknesses that emerge over time include potential rust, electrical gremlins (especially TIPM related), and suspension component wear. The 5.7L Hemi engine is generally durable, but proper cooling system maintenance is critical. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten the lifespan of any vehicle, including the 2007 Charger.

The car looks nice, and it's fast. That's about as much as I can say about it. The hood design is weird and simple fixes like a thermostat will take hours because of the placement.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Dodge Charger's tech and entertainment features were relatively basic for its time. Standard features typically included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input jack. Higher trims could offer options like a premium sound system, satellite radio, and a navigation system (though these systems are now outdated compared to modern standards).

Driver-assistance features were limited. ABS (Antilock Braking System) and traction control were standard. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was available as an option on some trims. Airbags (front and side curtain) were standard safety features.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance in frontal crash tests. Side-impact crash test ratings were typically acceptable. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings varied depending on the specific test and model year, so it's best to consult their website for specific results. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2007, and newer vehicles offer a higher level of protection. It lacked advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) common in modern cars, like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning.

Overall, the 2007 Charger offered a reasonable level of safety and entertainment for its era, but it's important to consider the advancements in technology when compared to newer vehicles.

2007 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Dodge Charger ranged from approximately $23,000 for the base SE model to around $40,000 for the SRT8. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to find them ranging from $4,000 to $15,000. Depreciation has been significant due to age and mileage. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (Hemi V8 models hold their value better), overall condition, documented maintenance history, and geographic location. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium.

2007 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Dodge Charger is generally not considered economical to own, especially the V8 models. Insurance costs can be moderate to high, depending on the driver's record and the trim level. Fuel costs are significant, particularly with the Hemi engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to above average, with potential for unexpected repairs due to the vehicle's age. Long-term ownership costs will depend heavily on how well the vehicle has been maintained. Budget for potential repairs and higher fuel consumption.

2007 Dodge Charger Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2007 Dodge Charger competed against cars like the Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300 (its corporate cousin), and Nissan Maxima. In terms of performance, the Charger (especially the R/T and SRT8) offered a significant edge over the Taurus and Impala, but the Maxima provided a sportier driving experience in a FWD package. Feature-wise, the Charger was comparable to its rivals, although some offered more advanced technology options. Reliability-wise, the Charger generally lagged behind the Japanese competitors like the Maxima, and the Impala held a slight edge as well. Price-wise, the Charger was generally competitive.

Alternatives to consider include the Chrysler 300, which shares many of the Charger's components but offers a more luxurious image. The Nissan Maxima provides a more refined driving experience and better reliability. A Ford Taurus from a later model year may offer more modern features and improved safety. Whether an alternative is "better" depends on individual priorities. If performance and aggressive styling are paramount, the Charger is a good choice. If reliability and fuel economy are higher priorities, alternatives like the Maxima or a newer Taurus might be more suitable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Dodge Charger a Good Sedan?

The 2007 Dodge Charger is ideal for someone seeking a muscular-looking sedan with available V8 power on a budget. It's worth buying *used* if you understand its potential maintenance needs and prioritize style and performance over outright reliability or fuel efficiency. The R/T trim offers a good balance of power and affordability, while the SRT8 is for those seeking maximum performance. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify any existing issues. Be prepared for potential repairs and higher running costs. If you can accept these caveats, the 2007 Charger can be a fun and rewarding vehicle.

Fun and reliable

This is my dream car and runs exactly like a dream. Very fast and also very reliable, roomy both front and back for a muscle car and fairly gas efficient for the large motor size. Hope to someday own another one!

My '07 Charger R/T

Lacks a little on the MPG but the 5.7L HEMI V8 performance makes up for it. Mine (in specific) is a former police squad car so with the police package it built to get up and move at an almost alarming rate. Fixing issues as they arise may be a little pricey due to the model but runs beautifully when in good/perfect condition.
