Rating: 4.64
Based on 78 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Dodge Charger, a modern iteration of a classic nameplate, is a full-size sedan known for its aggressive styling and available V8 power. Part of the Charger's fifth generation (2006-2010), it offers a blend of muscle car heritage and practicality. Key trims include the SE, SXT, R/T, and SRT8. Its popularity stems from its bold looks, spacious interior, and performance options, with new pricing ranging from around $22,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options. It stands out for its rear-wheel drive and available Hemi V8 engine.
The Good

The 2008 Dodge Charger offers strong performance, especially with the V8 engines, appealing to those seeking power. It provides a comfortable ride and spacious interior, satisfying practical needs. Its bold design and muscle-car heritage evoke emotional appeal. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers a compelling blend of value and performance for its class. Reliability can be hit-or-miss, but well-maintained models offer decent longevity.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2008 Dodge Charger include electrical issues, transmission problems (especially in earlier model years), and suspension wear. Rust can be a concern in colder climates. Fuel economy, particularly with the V8 engines, is poor. Interior materials can feel cheap in lower trims. Watch out for signs of deferred maintenance and prior accidents, as these can lead to costly repairs.

What Problems Does the 2008 Dodge Charger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Dodge Charger include electrical issues, such as problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) that can cause starting problems, stalling, and issues with various electrical components. Transmission issues, particularly with the earlier 5-speed automatic, are also common complaints, including rough shifting and premature failure. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arms, can wear out relatively quickly, especially in areas with poor road conditions.
Recalls for the 2008 Dodge Charger have included issues related to the airbag system, potential fuel leakage, and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the aforementioned electrical and transmission problems, as well as potential rust issues in regions with harsh winters. The 2006-2007 model years are often cited as having more problems compared to the 2008-2010 models, but the 2008 is not immune. Proper maintenance and addressing issues promptly can mitigate some of these concerns. Some owners have also reported issues with the cooling system, leading to overheating, so regular coolant flushes and inspections are recommended. Additionally, excessive oil consumption has been reported in some V8 engines.

How long will the 2008 Dodge Charger last?

The 2008 Dodge Charger, with proper maintenance, can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service heavily depend on driving habits and maintenance. Cars that receive regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely repairs will last longer.
Long-term durability weaknesses include potential rust, electrical problems (TIPM), and transmission wear. V8 engines can suffer from excessive oil consumption. Suspension components may require replacement over time. A well-cared-for Charger can provide many years of service, while neglected examples will likely require expensive repairs.

I bought mine in 08- I still have it and drive it daily. She's starting to show her age a little bit ( so am not I) have only had her in the garage 2x with an issue. The gas pedal box went bad and have had shocks replaced 3x guess that's simple maintenance though. The only thing I have really had to change about every 3 years is brake pads . After all these years. She's fast as xxxx and runs great ! aBEST CAR IVE EVER HAD .
JoeM1999
I'm very pleased with the car as it runs terrific and is very clean. I would buy another one from Chicago Motors and highly recommend this car dealership...

Negative Owner Reviews
Mopar Man
The car is okay , handles well, very sharp looking, good first car for new driver. The price could have been better. Do not trust car history reports, many things are easily hidden.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Dodge Charger came with a range of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered optional features like a premium audio system with satellite radio and a navigation system.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars, but included available features such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was also available, enhancing vehicle control in slippery conditions. Safety features included front and side airbags. Optional features included a security alarm system.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally awarded the 2008 Charger four or five stars for frontal and side impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Charger good ratings in frontal offset crash tests. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2008, so while the Charger offered decent protection for its time, newer vehicles generally provide a higher level of safety. Limited driver-assistance systems compared to modern vehicles.

2008 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Dodge Charger ranged from approximately $22,000 for the base SE model to around $40,000 for the SRT8. Current used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and trim level, generally ranging from $4,000 to $12,000.
Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (V8 models hold value better), overall condition, maintenance history, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and no accident history command higher prices. SRT8 models are the most desirable and retain their value the best.

2008 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Dodge Charger is generally not considered economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high, especially for V8 models. Fuel costs are significant, particularly with the Hemi engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to above average, with potential electrical and transmission issues. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglected models can become expensive to repair. Budget for potential repairs and higher fuel consumption when considering this vehicle. Its a costly vehicle to own.

2008 Dodge Charger Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Sedan?

Key rivals to the 2008 Dodge Charger include the Ford Crown Victoria, Chrysler 300, and Chevrolet Impala. In terms of performance, the Charger with a V8 engine offers a clear advantage over the Impala and Crown Victoria but is comparable to the Chrysler 300 with a Hemi. Feature-wise, the Charger is generally competitive, though the Impala may offer a slightly more refined interior.
Reliability is where the Charger falls short compared to the Impala and Crown Victoria, which are known for their durability. The Chrysler 300 shares many components with the Charger, so reliability is similar. In terms of price, the Charger is typically priced competitively within its class.
Alternatives to consider include the Ford Crown Victoria for its reliability and durability, the Chrysler 300 for a similar blend of performance and style with potentially more features, or the Chevrolet Impala for a more reliable and fuel-efficient option. If performance is the priority, a newer Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300 with an updated engine might be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Dodge Charger a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Sedan?

The 2008 Dodge Charger is ideal for those seeking a bold, spacious sedan with available V8 power and a touch of muscle car heritage. It's worth buying *used*, particularly if you prioritize performance and styling over ultimate reliability. The R/T trim offers a good balance of power and features. Condition is crucial; thoroughly inspect any potential purchase for signs of electrical or transmission problems, and prioritize models with a well-documented maintenance history. Avoid if reliability is your top concern or if you require excellent fuel economy. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended.
