The 2017 Dodge Charger is a full-size sedan with a muscle car soul, a legacy that dates back to the 1960s. It's offered in a four-door sedan body style. Key trims include the SXT, R/T, Daytona, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392, and Hellcat. When new, pricing ranged roughly from $28,000 to over $65,000. The Charger stands out due to its bold styling, powerful engine options (including the legendary HEMI V8), and spacious interior, making it a unique blend of performance and practicality.
The Good

The 2017 Charger's advantages include exhilarating performance, especially with V8 engines, and a comfortable, spacious interior. Its bold design appeals to emotional buyers, while its practicality as a family sedan and relatively affordable price point attract practical buyers. Reliability is generally decent, though some issues exist (see below). It offers a unique value proposition: muscle car thrills in a four-door package.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2017 Dodge Charger include potential electrical issues, especially with the infotainment system. Fuel economy is poor with the V8 engines. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission. Watch out for excessive oil consumption in some higher-mileage examples, and be sure to thoroughly inspect the vehicle's history for accident damage, especially if considering a high-performance trim.

Vehicle History Report

What Problems Does the 2017 Dodge Charger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Dodge Charger include electrical issues, specifically related to the Uconnect infotainment system (freezing, unresponsive touchscreen), and some reports of sensor malfunctions. Some owners have reported issues with the 8-speed automatic transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation. Excessive oil consumption has been noted in some higher-mileage V8 engines. There have been recalls related to airbag systems, powertrain, and electrical components; it's crucial to check the VIN for any outstanding recall work. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and the potential for increased repair costs as the vehicle ages. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. While the 2017 model year is generally considered to be fairly reliable, it's still essential to perform a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems before committing to a purchase. Check for any history of accidents or flood damage as well, particularly with performance trims that may have been driven hard.

How long will the 2017 Dodge Charger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Dodge Charger can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on driving habits and maintenance. Owners who follow the recommended maintenance schedule (oil changes, fluid flushes, etc.) can expect a longer lifespan. Long-term durability can be affected by electrical component failures, rust (especially in northern climates), and transmission issues. V8 engines, while powerful, can also be prone to increased oil consumption at higher mileage. Regular maintenance is key to mitigating these potential weaknesses and maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Dodge Charger boasts a Uconnect infotainment system, available with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims offer premium audio systems from BeatsAudio or Harman Kardon. Driver-assistance features, either standard or optional depending on the trim, include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

Safety features include standard airbags (front, side, and curtain), electronic stability control, and traction control. A rearview camera is standard on most trims.

The 2017 Dodge Charger received good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2017 Charger a "Good" rating in several crashworthiness categories, but its headlight performance was rated as "Marginal" or "Poor" depending on the trim. Specific ratings can vary based on optional equipment. Options such as the Technology Group add many active safety features, so it’s worth considering if safety is a top priority. Features such as automatic high beams and rain-sensing wipers are also available.

2017 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Dodge Charger ranged from approximately $28,000 for the base SXT to over $65,000 for the Hellcat. Current used market prices vary significantly based on trim, mileage, condition, and location, but generally range from $15,000 to $40,000. Depreciation is influenced by the trim level, with the higher-performance trims (Scat Pack, Hellcat) holding their value better than the base models. Low mileage, excellent condition, and a clean vehicle history report all positively impact resale value. The overall popularity and demand for muscle cars also contribute to the Charger's resale potential.

2017 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Dodge Charger is generally not considered an economical vehicle to own, especially the V8 models. Insurance costs can be higher due to its performance capabilities. Fuel costs are significant with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are average for a full-size sedan, but can increase with the higher-performance trims due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on driving habits and maintenance, but expect higher expenses compared to more fuel-efficient and less performance-oriented vehicles. Regular maintenance is critical to keeping costs reasonable.

Insurance for a 2017 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2017 Dodge Charger competes with other full-size sedans like the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Impala, and Toyota Avalon. In terms of performance, the Charger, especially with its V8 options, outperforms most rivals, offering a distinct muscle car feel. The Chrysler 300 is a similar alternative, sharing many components with the Charger but offering a more luxurious, refined experience. The Ford Taurus offers AWD, which the Charger lacks, and is generally more comfortable, but less engaging to drive. The Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon prioritize comfort and fuel efficiency over performance.

Reliability-wise, the Charger is comparable to the Chrysler 300 but may lag behind the Avalon. Feature-wise, the Charger offers a good balance of technology and comfort. Price-wise, the Charger is generally competitive, particularly in the lower trims. If performance isn't a top priority, the Toyota Avalon offers superior reliability. For similar performance with added luxury, the Chrysler 300 is a good alternative. However, for raw power and a true muscle car experience in a four-door sedan, the Charger is hard to beat.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Dodge Charger a Good Vehicle?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is ideal for those seeking a full-size sedan with a strong emphasis on performance and bold styling. It's worth buying if you prioritize power and are willing to accept the associated fuel costs and potential maintenance expenses. A used 2017 Charger can offer excellent value, especially in lower trims like the SXT or R/T, if well-maintained. The higher-performance trims (Scat Pack, Hellcat) are worth considering if performance is paramount, but require careful inspection due to the potential for hard driving. Avoid examples with a history of accidents or neglected maintenance. Ultimately, it's a worthwhile purchase for those who appreciate a blend of practicality and muscle car attitude.

The most unreliable car I've ever owned.

The think the Charger SRT is one best looking muscle cars on the road. But the car has had several issues in less than 4 years. First and last Dodge product for me.
