2018 Dodge Charger Review: Reasonably Dependable Full Size Car With Reasonable Ownership Costs

Rating: 4.65
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Dodge Charger is a full-size sedan with a muscle car attitude, tracing its lineage back to the iconic Chargers of the '60s and '70s. Produced as a 4-door sedan since 2006, the 2018 model continues this tradition. Key trims include the SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, and SRT Hellcat. New, it ranged roughly from $29,000 to over $67,000. Its blend of performance, spaciousness, and aggressive styling makes it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2018 Charger offers strong performance, especially in higher trims. It has a comfortable and spacious interior, and a bold, aggressive design. Its value proposition is appealing, offering lots of power for the price. While not the most efficient, it provides a visceral driving experience, appealing to emotional buyers while offering practicality for everyday use.

The Bad

The 2018 Charger's weaknesses include fuel economy, especially with the V8 engines. The interior materials aren't always the highest quality. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting electrical issues. Be aware of potential transmission problems, particularly in higher mileage vehicles, and check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2018 Dodge Charger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Dodge Charger include electrical issues, such as problems with the Uconnect infotainment system, malfunctioning sensors, and issues with the charging system. Some owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting or failure, particularly in vehicles with higher mileage. There have been recalls related to airbags, fuel leaks, and electrical systems, so checking the VIN for open recalls is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the durability of the transmission and the longevity of some electronic components. While the engines themselves are generally robust, the supporting systems can be prone to issues. Some model years have experienced more complaints regarding specific components, so research on Charger forums and NHTSA's website is recommended. Overall, preventative maintenance and careful monitoring of potential warning signs are important for ensuring long-term reliability.

How long will the 2018 Dodge Charger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Dodge Charger can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity greatly depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, brake services, or transmission maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is generally good for the engine itself, but weaknesses include the electronic components and transmission. Regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly can greatly extend the vehicle's lifespan. The robust V8 engines, when properly maintained, often outlast the supporting systems.

hellcats all are garbage they all come with issues after a few month do not buy hellcats dodge you need to wake up your vehicles are garbage for American car. will never buy a dodge ever again all are garbe even jeep, caravans,

DO NOT BUY the all-wheel drive GT. It has been computerized to death. From the engine break that down-shifts to save gas and the breaks, to the delay from the time you press the accelerator to the time it ACTUALLY moves forward, I have never driven such a frustrating vehicle of any kind. EVERYTHING about the way this car drives and rides is a DOWNGRADE from my 2010 Charger. Dodge should be ashamed of themselves for making such a substandard piece of machinery and I'm embarrassed for buying it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Dodge Charger features the Uconnect infotainment system, which is generally praised for its user-friendliness. Standard features include a touchscreen display (usually 7-inch or 8.4-inch), Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offer navigation, premium audio systems (like Harman Kardon), and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Driver-assistance features were mostly optional, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The 2018 Charger received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, although specific ratings can vary depending on the model year and trim. Standard safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional features like the Technology Group added many of the advanced safety features, enhancing overall safety. The available rearview camera is standard, improving visibility during reversing maneuvers. The infotainment system is easy to use, but some owners have reported occasional glitches.

2018 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Dodge Charger ranged from approximately $29,000 for the base SXT to over $67,000 for the SRT Hellcat. Used market prices currently range from around $18,000 to $45,000, depending on trim, mileage, and condition. Depreciation is moderate, but higher performance trims (R/T, Scat Pack, Hellcat) tend to hold their value better due to their desirability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like upgraded audio or driver-assistance features. The overall demand for muscle cars also impacts resale values.

2018 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Dodge Charger is generally considered costly to own, especially the higher performance trims. Insurance rates are higher due to the vehicle's performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, particularly with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs are average, but some repairs can be expensive, especially related to the transmission or electrical systems. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on driving habits and maintenance, but budgeting for potential repairs is crucial. The V6 models are slightly more economical, but overall, the Charger is not an inexpensive vehicle to own.

2018 Dodge Charger Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Dodge Charger competes with vehicles like the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus (discontinued), and Toyota Avalon. In terms of performance, the Charger excels, especially in its higher trims, offering significantly more horsepower than many rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable infotainment system and available driver-assistance features. However, the Chrysler 300 offers a more luxurious interior. Reliability is where the Charger lags behind some competitors, particularly the Avalon, which is known for its dependability. The Charger's price is competitive, offering good value for the performance you get.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • **Chrysler 300:** More luxurious and refined, similar platform.
  • **Toyota Avalon:** More reliable, comfortable, but less sporty.
  • **Ford Taurus (if available used):** Similar size, but generally less performance-oriented.
The Charger is a good choice if performance and aggressive styling are priorities, but buyers seeking ultimate reliability might consider the Avalon. The Chrysler 300 provides a blend of luxury and performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Dodge Charger a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Dodge Charger is ideal for buyers who want a spacious sedan with a strong dose of muscle car attitude. It's worth buying if you prioritize performance and aggressive styling over ultimate reliability and fuel efficiency. Buying used is a good option, as depreciation makes it more affordable. The R/T or R/T Scat Pack trims offer the best balance of performance and value. A thorough inspection and a vehicle history report are essential before purchasing any used Charger, especially to check for prior accidents or maintenance issues. Ensure all recalls have been addressed. If reliability is a major concern, consider a different vehicle, or be prepared for potential repairs.

Beware the “FREE CARWASH”

Has had issues since drivin off the lot, actually upon “free car wash” offer at purchase, the in-house car wash proceeded to put scratches (1000's of scratches, some down to metal) on every exposed painted surfaces.

Fastest piece of junk on the road

The radios in these vehicles - all Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep products - are defective from the factory. They fail, making the navigation system, sound system, and backup cameras stop working. The dealerships can't fix them, Dodge does not provide working parts. All they do is keep sending you home with a broken car month after month until you finally sell it in disgust.

GT AWD

The V6 AWD offers 0-60 in under 7 seconds, the 1/4 mile in approx 14.5 seconds +/-, smooth quiet ride between 40-90 mph on the highway with no problems passing or merging, combined city/highway MPG at approx 23. The drive quality is very good. The car performs best between 30 to 75 mph as it is not especially quick from 0-30 mph If these numbers/features will not satisfy your needs foe either sound or speed then spring for the RT, Skat Pack or Hellcat but once you start spending $$ on the higher trim levels you have many options from many car companies that offer nice performance. Some basic electric cars can now do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds

Absolutely a great American car

I own the Daytona 392 Edition it's a 6.4L V8 excellent vehicle the best part about the car is the powerful 6.4L engine and the exterior styling but the interior it looks very very cheap looks like from 1950's needs a huge make over wish they copy from Germans. Apart from interior everything is excellent. it is not only Dodge brand but in my opinion all the American car interior is outdated.
