The 2006 Dodge Charger marked the return of the iconic nameplate as a four-door sedan, resurrecting a legend. The body style deviated from the classic two-door coupes of the past, aiming for a blend of muscle car heritage and family sedan practicality. Model years included 2006-2010 for this generation. Key trims included the SE, SXT, R/T, and SRT8. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $38,000 when new. Its bold styling, powerful engine options, and rear-wheel-drive configuration made it a popular choice for enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2006 Dodge Charger offers a compelling blend of performance and practicality. Performance: Powerful engine options, especially the Hemi V8, deliver thrilling acceleration. Design: Its aggressive styling evokes muscle car heritage. Comfort: A spacious interior provides comfortable seating for passengers. Value: Used models offer excellent value for the performance and features offered. For emotional buyers, the Charger is a statement. For practical buyers, it's a spacious, powerful, and relatively affordable sedan.

The Bad

The 2006 Dodge Charger has some known weaknesses. Reliability: Some owners have reported electrical issues, especially with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). What Problems Does the 2006 Dodge Charger Have?

The 2006 Dodge Charger has several frequently reported problems. One of the most common issues is with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). This can cause a variety of electrical problems, including stalling, fuel pump failure, and issues with the windows and door locks. Another common issue is with the front suspension components, particularly the ball joints and control arm bushings, which can wear out prematurely. Rust can also be a problem, especially in areas where salt is used on the roads during winter. This is particularly true around the rear wheel wells and undercarriage.

Several recalls have been issued for the 2006 Charger over the years. These include recalls for potential fuel leaks, airbag issues, and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's crucial to check the VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the earlier model years. Proper maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help extend the life of the vehicle. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, especially at higher mileage. Premature wear of brake components is also frequently reported, particularly in the R/T and SRT8 models due to their increased performance capabilities.

How long will the 2006 Dodge Charger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Dodge Charger can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service from their Chargers, provided they are well-maintained. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing repairs promptly are crucial for longevity. The 3.5L V6 and 5.7L Hemi V8 engines are generally considered durable, but the 2.7L V6 has a slightly shorter lifespan. The primary long-term durability concerns revolve around rust, electrical issues (TIPM), and suspension wear. Vehicles in warmer climates tend to fare better due to the absence of road salt and harsh winter conditions. A well-cared-for 2006 Charger can still be a reliable daily driver or weekend cruiser.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Dodge Charger's built-in tech and features varied by trim level. Base SE models offered limited features, including a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the SXT and R/T offered upgrades like a premium audio system, available Sirius satellite radio, and a power driver's seat. Navigation was an optional feature on some trims. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control were standard. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was available on some trims. Safety features included front airbags and side curtain airbags.

The SRT8 model offered performance-oriented features such as performance-tuned suspension and Brembo brakes.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary. The 2006 Charger generally received good ratings in frontal crash tests, but side-impact ratings were less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, and their ratings should be consulted for a comprehensive assessment. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2006, so compared to modern cars, the 2006 Charger offers fewer active safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning.

2006 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Dodge Charger ranged in price from approximately $23,000 for a base SE model to around $38,000 for a fully loaded SRT8. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to find base models for under $5,000, while well-maintained SRT8 models can fetch upwards of $15,000 or more. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for most vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition, mileage, trim level (SRT8 models hold their value better), maintenance history, and location. Cars in warmer climates with minimal rust tend to command higher prices.

2006 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Dodge Charger is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs can be higher, particularly for the R/T and SRT8 models due to their performance capabilities. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to above average, depending on the specific issues encountered. The TIPM and front suspension components are known areas of concern. Long-term ownership costs will depend heavily on how well the vehicle has been maintained and the trim level. Economical it is not, particularly if you opt for a Hemi.

2006 Dodge Charger Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2006 Dodge Charger competed with other full-size sedans such as the Ford Crown Victoria, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, and Pontiac Grand Prix. In terms of performance, the Charger, especially in R/T and SRT8 trims, offered superior horsepower and acceleration compared to many rivals. The Crown Victoria focused more on comfort and durability for fleet use. The Impala offered a more fuel-efficient option, but lacked the Charger's aggressive styling and rear-wheel-drive appeal. The Chrysler 300, sharing a platform with the Charger, offered a more luxurious alternative with similar performance.

Regarding reliability, the Charger has some known issues, potentially making it less reliable than the Impala or Crown Victoria. The Pontiac Grand Prix GXP offered similar performance to the Charger R/T but with front-wheel drive. Price-wise, the Charger was generally competitive within its class. For those prioritizing reliability and fuel efficiency, the Chevrolet Impala might be a better choice. If you want a luxurious ride with similar power, consider the Chrysler 300. However, if you value performance and bold styling above all else, the 2006 Dodge Charger (especially an R/T or SRT8) remains a compelling option, but be prepared for potential maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Dodge Charger a Good Sedan?

The 2006 Dodge Charger is ideal for buyers seeking a blend of muscle car attitude and sedan practicality at an affordable price point. It's worth buying *used*, provided you are aware of its potential weaknesses and can find a well-maintained example. An R/T or SRT8 trim is recommended for performance enthusiasts, but be mindful of higher fuel and maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial to identify any existing issues. If you prioritize reliability and fuel economy, alternatives like the Impala might be more suitable. However, for those who appreciate the Charger's bold styling and powerful engine options, it can be a rewarding, albeit potentially temperamental, purchase.

Did its job.

I owned this car for 5 years, and throughout high school. This car is fast and handles flawlessly. If you are moving from a normal vehicle or a truck to this car you will notice a huge difference in performance. The new engine was necessary due to a mechanic putting far less than the recommended amount of oil in the car so the oiled burned out before normal and took the engine with it. Also the new engine makes it feel even better, and almost brand new regarding preformance. Overall this car is fast, good-looking, and reliable for many years to come.

I bought a 2006, dodge charger from a man and it wasn't in the best condition but i still bought it and on the way home the right wheel and the rotor fell off and i wrecked it so i let it sit in my garage and after 2 years I decided i was going to rebuild it and i did.
