Based on 27 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The BMW X5, a mid-size luxury SUV, debuted in 1999, pioneering the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment. The 2021 model represents the fourth generation. Key trims include the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e (plug-in hybrid), and the M50i. Pricing ranged from roughly $60,000 to over $80,000 when new, depending on options. It's popular for its blend of luxury, performance, and practicality, combined with BMW's driving dynamics.
The Good

The 2021 BMW X5 offers a compelling blend of advantages. Performance-oriented drivers will appreciate its powerful engine options and responsive handling. Its luxurious interior, comfortable ride, and ample cargo space appeal to practical buyers. Emotionally, its iconic design and BMW badge provide a sense of prestige and satisfaction. Reliability is generally good, enhancing its overall value.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2021 BMW X5 can be expensive to maintain, with premium parts and labor costs. Some owners have reported issues with the complex electronics and infotainment system. The plug-in hybrid version (xDrive45e) can have software glitches. The run-flat tires contribute to a firmer ride and are costly to replace.

What Problems Does the 2021 BMW X5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2021 BMW X5 include issues with the infotainment system (iDrive), such as glitches, freezing, and connectivity problems. Some owners have reported electrical issues, including sensor malfunctions and battery drain. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid has seen complaints regarding software glitches impacting charging and range estimation.
Recalls for the 2021 X5 have included issues related to the high-voltage battery in the xDrive45e, potentially leading to thermal events (fire risk), and problems with the rearview camera display.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The air suspension (if equipped) can be prone to issues over time. Oil leaks are also a potential concern as the vehicle ages, particularly with the V8 engine in the M50i. Regular maintenance and adherence to BMW's recommended service schedule are crucial to mitigating these risks. While the 2021 model year is generally considered reliable, these potential issues should be considered when evaluating a used X5.

How long will the 2021 BMW X5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 BMW X5 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. Longevity heavily depends on adherence to recommended maintenance schedules, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items. Long-term durability can be affected by the air suspension system (if equipped), which can require costly repairs. Electrical components and the infotainment system can also exhibit weaknesses over time. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 BMW X5 boasts a wealth of technology. The iDrive 7.0 infotainment system features a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Entertainment features include a premium Harman Kardon sound system (optional) and rear-seat entertainment screens (optional).
Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keeping assist, and parking assistant plus.
Safety features encompass a comprehensive airbag system, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.
The 2021 BMW X5 received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS, earning a "Top Safety Pick+" award. The NHTSA also awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating.
Further optional features include a head-up display, gesture control, and a surround-view camera system. The X5's technology suite is both comprehensive and user-friendly, enhancing both safety and convenience.

2021 BMW X5 Prices and Market Value

The 2021 BMW X5 had a starting MSRP around $60,000, with higher trims and options pushing the price well above $80,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $45,000 to $65,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is moderate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, trim level (M50i holds value better), and optional equipment. Lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records significantly boost resale value.

2021 BMW X5 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW X5 is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the M50i. Maintenance and repair costs are also high, reflecting premium parts and specialized labor. While the xDrive45e offers some fuel savings, its complex hybrid system can lead to expensive repairs. Overall, the X5 is not an economical choice but offers luxury and performance.

2021 BMW X5 Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 BMW X5 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 BMW X5 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X5 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. In terms of performance, the X5 excels, particularly the M50i, offering a sportier driving experience than the GLE or Q7. Feature-wise, the X5 is well-equipped but can be pricier than the Volvo XC90, which offers a similar level of luxury at a lower price point.
Reliability is a key differentiator. While the X5 is generally reliable, the GLE and Q7 have also proven to be dependable choices. The Range Rover Sport, known for its off-road capabilities, often lags behind in reliability ratings.
For price, the XC90 offers better value. For a blend of luxury, performance, and slightly better predicted reliability, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is a strong alternative. The Audi Q7 provides a comfortable ride and advanced technology. If off-road capability is a priority, the Range Rover Sport is worth considering, but be aware of potential reliability concerns. Overall, the X5 is a strong contender, but other options may better suit specific needs and budgets.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 BMW X5 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X5 is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and performance-oriented SUV. It's worth buying if you appreciate BMW's driving dynamics, upscale interior, and advanced technology. A used model offers significant savings compared to new. The xDrive40i provides a good balance of performance and fuel economy. Consider a certified pre-owned (CPO) X5 for added warranty protection. Be prepared for higher maintenance costs. If budget is a major concern, consider alternatives like the Volvo XC90 or Acura MDX.

I bought a 2021 BMW X5 4.

I bought a 2021 BMW X5 4.0 with the M Sports Package and this had been one of best vehicles ever owned. The reliability, comfort and curb appeal adds to it value. I traded a 2016 Lexus GX 460 for the X5 and have no regrets!

Bought an new Defender but traded it after 5 month

I frequently change cars because I love to learn and experience new vehicles. I bought a new 2020 RR Defender and traded it after 5 months for the X5. I wasn't really looking for a new car but fell in love with the X5 while accompanying a friend on a test drive. I really like that it handles like an ultimate driving machine. And the drive characteristics are extremely customizable. It's quiet, quick and comfortable. No squeaks or rattles - the RR had a few. It's a solid German example of automotive excellence.

Great upgrade to an X5

Just purchased a 2021 BMW X5 with a trade-in of 2020 X3. I've been dealing with BMW of Ocala for a few years now and can only have the best to say about BMW of Ocala. Excellent people with special thanks to our sales rep, Christina Gangapersaud, and James Jupiter, Sales Manager. Treated extremely well, so friendly and professional. I couldn't have asked for better service. Thanks to all for a great experience and this beautiful car.

The Ultimate Driving Machine

There’s a reason it’s called the Ultimate Driving Machine. Fantastic German engineering. Great ride. Great performance. Finest vehicle I ve ever owned. BMW not only has a great reputation but they’ve earned it.

One of the favorite cars we’ve owned.

Went to buy an Audi at dealership next door but they didn’t have the car that their inventory showed. So while we we close by went and drove an X5. Needless to say my wife loved it!

A pretty machine with some drawbacks

Ive owned mine for 4 months . It has a great motor) smooth and powerful) and looks nice. Its quiet and would have a smooth ride except for the 45 series tires. The major weakness is the electric steering. It is very light. And there is a vagueness that makes it hard to keep from wandering to the lane edge where the lane assist kicks in. It kind of ruins the joy of driving for me. Also, the brakes can be a bit grabby, i suspect due to the regeneration. They became mild hybrid this year; but the epa milagr is no better.
