The 2014 BMW X5 represents the third generation of this popular luxury SUV. It's a mid-size SUV known for its blend of performance, luxury, and practicality. Model years for this generation span 2014-2018. Key trims include the sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive50i, and the diesel xDrive35d. The original MSRP ranged approximately from $53,000 to $70,000+, depending on the trim and options. It stands out due to its sporty handling, luxurious interior, and available third-row seating, offering versatility.
The Good

The 2014 BMW X5 offers strong performance with its powerful engine options and responsive handling, appealing to those seeking a sporty driving experience. Its luxurious interior provides a comfortable and refined ride. While not the most fuel-efficient, it's acceptable for its class. It provides great value, blending luxury and utility, pleasing both emotional desires and practical needs. The overall design is sleek and modern, making it visually appealing.

The Bad

The 2014 BMW X5 can have some known weaknesses. Potential issues include oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing. The complex electronics can sometimes be problematic. Suspension components, such as air suspension (if equipped), can also be prone to failure. Routine maintenance is crucial, and repairs can be costly, so factor that in. The third-row seat is cramped for adults.

What Problems Does the 2014 BMW X5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 BMW X5 often revolve around oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing. These leaks can lead to further issues if not addressed promptly. Some owners have also reported issues with the cooling system, including water pump and thermostat failures. The complex electronics system, including the iDrive system, can experience glitches and malfunctions. The air suspension system, if equipped, can be prone to leaks and compressor failures, leading to a bumpy ride and costly repairs.

Recalls for the 2014 X5 have included issues related to the fuel pump, potentially causing engine stalling, and problems with the front driveshaft, which could lead to loss of power. Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability concerns often stem from the vehicle's complexity. As the vehicle ages, the probability of encountering issues with sensors, actuators, and electronic components increases. Proper maintenance and timely repairs are crucial for mitigating these risks. Diesel models, while fuel-efficient, can have additional maintenance requirements related to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other emissions control components. Addressing minor issues promptly is key to preventing them from escalating into more significant and expensive problems down the line.

How long will the 2014 BMW X5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 BMW X5 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, this heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled services, such as oil changes and fluid flushes, will significantly reduce its lifespan. Long-term durability can be affected by the failure of plastic and rubber components in the engine and cooling systems. Weaknesses often emerge in the suspension and electrical systems as the vehicle ages. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan and minimizing costly repairs.
Positive Owner Reviews
Gustavo Woltmann
This 4000 lb beast maneuvers like a sports car. As someone who's always been passionate about cars, I leaned towards vehicles like the 3 series coupe or Audi A5. However, when the need for family space arose, SUVs felt dull. Then I got behind the wheel of the X5. It's a revelation—you truly don't have to compromise. There's ample space, exceptional handling, and a range of engines from powerful to downright exhilarating (like the X5M).

Interior is not impressive. Outside is OK. Back bumper is plastic and I do not like it . Brakes are not perfect. May be need to change tires
BMW Owner - and sorry for it.
I believe a vehicle which costs 2X another vehicle should be 2X more reliable, etc. This is definitely not this car. If you're looking for status and a name good for you. If you're looking for a well designed and built car look elsewhere. BMW makes a mockery of great engineering - which it may be - but not built that way. Too many things go wrong one at a time. All four power window motors (1 at a time), fuel system, suspension, etc, etc. Go buy a Toyota or Honda - which many are made in the US anyway. Good luck!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 BMW X5 features the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display (higher trims had larger displays). Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, a premium sound system, and a power liftgate. Optional entertainment features include a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens.

Driver-assistance features include available lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera. These were often part of optional packages. Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes.

Optional safety features included adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera system.

The 2014 BMW X5 received generally positive crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). However, it's essential to consult the official IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific crash test ratings and reports, as ratings can vary depending on the specific model and testing year. The safety features contributed to its good ratings, making it a safe choice for families. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of these systems degrades over time and require proper maintenance and calibration.

2014 BMW X5 Prices and Market Value

The 2014 BMW X5 had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $53,000 to over $70,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, contingent upon mileage, condition, and location. The X5 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and higher maintenance costs associated with luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Models with complete service records and lower mileage command higher prices. The diesel models also tend to hold their value slightly better.

2014 BMW X5 Cost of Ownership

The 2014 BMW X5 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs vary based on engine choice, with the diesel being the most economical. Maintenance and repair costs are significant due to the complexity of the vehicle and the higher price of BMW parts. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs, making it not an economical choice compared to non-luxury SUVs.

2014 BMW X5 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 BMW X5 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 BMW X5 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2014 BMW X5 competes with luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (GLE), Audi Q7, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX. In terms of performance, the X5 generally offers a sportier driving experience than the RX and MDX but is comparable to the M-Class and Q7. Features are similar across the board, with each offering a range of luxury and tech options.

Reliability is where the X5 can fall short compared to the Lexus RX and Acura MDX, which are known for their superior reliability. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has similar reliability concerns. The Audi Q7 falls somewhere in between. Price-wise, the X5 is generally in line with its German competitors, but more expensive than the Japanese alternatives, both in initial cost and maintenance.

Alternatives to consider include the Lexus RX350 for superior reliability and lower running costs, or the Acura MDX for a more budget-friendly option with decent features. If performance is a top priority, the Porsche Cayenne could also be considered, although it comes at a higher price point. The Mercedes-Benz GLE (formerly M-Class) offers a similar blend of luxury and performance, but consider its reliability history.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 BMW X5 a Good Wagon?

The 2014 BMW X5 is ideal for those who prioritize a sporty driving experience and a luxurious interior in a mid-size SUV. It's worth buying *used* if you're aware of the potential maintenance costs and are prepared to address them proactively. Consider the xDrive35i for a good balance of performance and fuel economy, or the xDrive35d for better fuel efficiency. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to assess the vehicle's condition and identify potential issues. If reliability and low running costs are paramount, consider alternatives like the Lexus RX or Acura MDX.

4th BMW, first X5 and I love it!

I’ve owned a 325, 535, 750Li, and I now have an AWD X5. I really love it so far! The lines are beautiful, and I enjoy that it’s a nimble drive, while still delivering a luxury experience. I found that I prefer a softer tire than the standard run flats. My Perellis allow for a smoother, quieter ride without sacrificing performance. While my 750 delivers unmatched cruising comfort, I’m loving how zippy the X5 is. It’s really versatile as an SAV, but I still feel like it’s a sexy car!

Just finished (Oct 2019) a 6k miles round trip to the East coast in it. Cruised the western freeways a 90 mph and the eastern freeways at mph. Got a consistent 24mpg. Drove some back roads in Idaho and Oregon requiring passing semi truck. That twin scroll really works

Extremely unreliable is what I found. The turbo went after 23000 kms, the rear air ride after about 80k and then the final straw was the active SCR tank sensor. A 2400 dollar repair bill. I had the m sport and found the ride to be stupidly stiff and the ridiculous camber on the rear tires just chews away at your rubber.
