The BMW X5, a luxury mid-size SUV, has been a popular choice since its introduction in 1999, pioneering the 'Sports Activity Vehicle' segment. The 2022 X5, part of the fourth generation (G05), offers a blend of performance and practicality. Key trims include the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e (plug-in hybrid), and the performance-oriented M50i and X5 M. Pricing ranges from approximately $60,000 to over $100,000 depending on the trim and options. It stands out for its luxurious interior, engaging driving dynamics, and a wide range of available technology.
The Good

The 2022 BMW X5 offers a compelling blend of performance and comfort. It boasts powerful engine options appealing to emotional buyers seeking thrills. Practical buyers appreciate its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and available advanced safety features. While not the most reliable in its class, the X5 strikes a good balance between luxury, capability, and brand cachet. Its design is both elegant and sporty. The xDrive45e model also offers respectable fuel efficiency for a vehicle of its size.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 BMW X5 include a higher price point compared to some competitors. Reliability can be a concern, with reports of electrical system glitches and some engine issues. Options can significantly inflate the price. The run-flat tires can provide a harsher ride. Some may find the infotainment system complex to master. Watch out for potential issues with the air suspension system, especially on higher mileage models.

What Problems Does the 2022 BMW X5 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2022 BMW X5 can vary, but some common issues include electrical system malfunctions, such as problems with the iDrive infotainment system, sensor failures, and issues with the battery draining prematurely. Some owners have reported minor issues with the interior trim and fit and finish. Engine oil leaks have also been documented on earlier model years of the current generation X5 (G05), though these seem less prevalent on the 2022 models. The air suspension, while providing a comfortable ride, can be prone to issues over time, particularly with air leaks or compressor failures, especially in colder climates.
Recalls for the 2022 BMW X5 have been issued for various issues, including problems with the fuel pump, potentially causing the engine to stall, and issues with the airbag system. It's essential to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to your VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns for the X5 generally revolve around the complexity of its systems. As the vehicle ages, the potential for failures in the electrical components, sensors, and the air suspension increases. Regular maintenance, following BMW's recommended service schedule, and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns. It's also advisable to use a BMW-certified mechanic for repairs to ensure proper diagnosis and repair procedures.

How long will the 2022 BMW X5 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 BMW X5 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service or 10-12 years. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule is critical. Long-term durability can be affected by several factors. Weaknesses often emerge in the electrical system, potentially leading to sensor failures and infotainment glitches. The air suspension, if equipped, requires attention and may need replacement components over time. Engine issues, while less common, can occur, especially if oil changes are neglected. Rust is generally well-controlled, but proper care is still important, especially in regions with harsh winters. Regular fluid checks and timely repairs are crucial to maximizing lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 BMW X5 boasts an impressive array of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 12.3-inch infotainment display with iDrive 7.0, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, navigation, and a premium sound system. Driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, parking assistant plus, and a head-up display.
Entertainment options extend to a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens and wireless headphones. Connectivity features include over-the-air software updates and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional safety features enhance protection with more advanced collision avoidance systems.
The 2022 BMW X5 received high crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation, reflecting its superior performance in crash tests and the availability of advanced safety technologies.

How Does the 2022 BMW X5 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 BMW X5 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, and Land Rover Range Rover Sport. In terms of performance, the X5 offers a range of potent engines, rivaling the Cayenne and GLE, while offering a more engaging driving experience than the Q7. Feature-wise, it is well-equipped, comparable to its German rivals. However, the Mercedes-Benz GLE often boasts a slightly more luxurious interior. Reliability is where the X5 falls slightly behind; the Audi Q7 and Lexus RX are generally considered more reliable. Price-wise, the X5 is competitive, sitting in a similar range to its main rivals.
Alternatives to the X5 include:
* Mercedes-Benz GLE: A strong competitor with a more opulent interior, but potentially lower reliability.
* Audi Q7: A more practical and arguably more reliable choice, but lacking the X5's sporty driving dynamics.
* Porsche Cayenne: Offers superior performance and handling but at a higher price point and with less focus on practicality.
* Lexus RX: A very reliable and comfortable option, but lacks the X5's performance and engaging driving feel.
If reliability is a primary concern, the Lexus RX is a better choice. For ultimate performance, the Porsche Cayenne is the leader. The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers a more plush experience. The Audi Q7 provides a well-rounded alternative with a focus on practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 BMW X5 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 BMW X5 is ideal for buyers seeking a luxury SUV with a blend of performance, comfort, and technology. It's worth buying if you prioritize driving dynamics and a premium experience. However, potential buyers should be aware of the higher ownership costs and potential reliability concerns. A used 2022 X5 can offer good value, but a thorough inspection and maintenance history are crucial. The xDrive40i provides a good balance of performance and efficiency. If performance is paramount, the M50i is a compelling option. Consider a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) model for added peace of mind regarding warranty coverage. Ultimately, the X5 is a rewarding choice for those willing to invest in its upkeep.

Mixed bag for us

Our 2022 X5 was a beautiful car to us. Unfortunately it didn't work for us as my wife is handicapped and found it difficult to get in and out of - it's higher than one would expect and came to realize the seats are more inboard than other cars that are direct competitors. The 3 inch door sill was almost like a running board and contributed to her struggles. Even though we had the multi-contour seats, we found the lower cushion seat side bolsters too firm for any drive more than an hour. The seat back was fine. While driving around town and 2 lanes was great, it didn't track as well on the highway as one would expect, even after an alignment (it was off at delivery). Our old Volvos were much better in that regard. The positives include the exterior and interior design/layout, the quality, ride, handling and power. It also still has a few buttons, albeit a bit small when driving. The headlights were awesome and the gas mileage was better than expected, 21 around town and 28+ on the highway. Our situation is unique, and after 7 months we sold the car to a tall, able bodied couple.

2022 X5 Sdrive 4.0

Only had the X5 for 4 weeks now but so far it is an awesome vehicle that runs and drives great. It appears to be very well built with good body lines and fit. Some of the safety features and electronic systems take some time to get set up properly for the best driving experience but the reward is well worth the time as everything is customizable for two drivers. Only bad thing is that a mower along the roadside threw a stone and put a chip in our paint and the paint isn’t self healing.
