Rating: 4.72
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Dodge Charger is a large, American-made sedan that blends muscle car performance with family-friendly practicality. Part of the seventh generation (2011-present), its bold styling and powerful engine options have made it a popular choice. Key trims include the SE, SXT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat. Original pricing ranged from around $28,000 to over $65,000 depending on the trim. Its aggressive looks and available V8 power set it apart from other sedans.
The Good

The 2016 Dodge Charger offers a thrilling driving experience with powerful engine options (performance). It provides a comfortable and spacious interior for passengers (comfort). Its aggressive, muscular design appeals to enthusiasts (design). While not the most efficient, it offers decent value for the performance (value). The roomy cabin makes it practical for families.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 Dodge Charger include below-average fuel economy, especially with the V8 engines. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electrical components. Reliability can be a concern, and it's important to check the vehicle history for prior accidents or maintenance neglect. The large size can also make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces.

What Problems Does the 2016 Dodge Charger Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Dodge Charger can include issues with the Uconnect infotainment system, such as freezing, lagging, or connectivity problems. Some owners have reported electrical issues, including problems with the power windows, door locks, and sensors. Premature wear of brake components has also been noted by some owners.

Recalls for the 2016 model year have included issues related to the side airbags, which may not deploy properly in a crash, and potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel rail crossover tubes. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or failure, have been reported, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and the strain put on components by the high-performance engines. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to mitigate these risks. Checking for any outstanding recalls and addressing them promptly is also essential. Prior to purchasing a used 2016 Charger, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2016 Dodge Charger last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Dodge Charger can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service can extend beyond 10 years with diligent care. Regular oil changes, timely fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for longevity. Long-term durability weaknesses can include suspension component wear, especially with aggressive driving, and potential rust issues in regions with harsh winters. Electronic components, as mentioned previously, can also be a source of long-term concern, so keeping the car garaged or covered can help protect the interior components.

If you are wanting a reliable car, that drives smooth, this is the car for you! Hands down the best car I have ever owned! I have a 2016 SXT Rear Wheel drive with the 3.6L V6 engine. I am the original owner and still till today I have the car. From mileage of 0-135,000, I have only had to have the oil changed, tires rotated, and of course brakes. At 135,000 miles I had my first major repair which was the passenger side lifters, cam shaft and Rods replaced. Now currently at 140,000 my drive shaft. But overall, this car has been hands down the best I have ever owned. The only thing that I am disappointed with is that Chargers are known for the door panels to peel away, and yet Dodge still has not put in a recall on this matter. Wake up Dodge put the recall in on the door panels pulling away, because honestly the glue you all used back then is not living up to its potential.

This is the best car I have owned in over 40 years of driving. I have the 3.6L V6 SXT model. I have driven more than 100,000 miles and so far all I had to do was regular maintenance. Car has strong pickup both from a standstill and at higher speed. I love the way it looks and feels. Handles very well. If I had to pick one area for improvement, it would be the interior finishing. The plastic on the drivers door panel is starting to separate. Other than that, I LOVE this car.

2016 Dodge Charger Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Dodge Charger ranged from approximately $28,000 (SE) to over $65,000 (SRT Hellcat). Current used market prices vary greatly based on trim, mileage, and condition. Expect to find base models for around $12,000-$18,000, while higher performance trims like the SRT Hellcat can still command prices in the $30,000-$45,000 range.

Depreciation is affected by factors such as mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. High-performance models tend to hold their value better than base models. Maintaining the car well and keeping mileage reasonable will positively impact resale value.

2016 Dodge Charger Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Dodge Charger can be costly to own, particularly the higher performance trims. Insurance rates are generally higher due to the car's performance capabilities and sporty image. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are moderate, but repairs can be expensive, especially for complex electrical or mechanical issues. Long-term ownership costs should be considered carefully, factoring in potential repairs and higher fuel consumption. The V6 models are more economical.

2016 Dodge Charger Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Dodge Charger is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Dodge Charger Compare to Other Sedan?

Key rivals to the 2016 Dodge Charger include the Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Chevrolet Impala, and Nissan Maxima. In terms of performance, the Charger, especially in R/T and SRT trims, stands out with its powerful V8 engines, outperforming many rivals. The Chrysler 300 offers similar styling and features, often at a slightly lower price point, but may not have the same aggressive performance image. The Ford Taurus provides a comfortable ride and available all-wheel drive but lacks the Charger's raw power. The Chevrolet Impala offers a more refined and fuel-efficient option but doesn't match the Charger's performance or aggressive styling. The Nissan Maxima focuses on sporty handling and a premium interior but lacks the Charger's V8 options.

Reliability-wise, the Charger can be less reliable than some of its Japanese competitors. Feature-wise, it offers a comparable range of tech and safety features. Price-wise, it is generally competitive within its class, offering good value for the performance and features offered. If reliability is a top concern, the Toyota Avalon or Buick LaCrosse might be better alternatives. The Chrysler 300 is a similar alternative if you want similar styling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Dodge Charger a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Dodge Charger is ideal for buyers seeking a bold, powerful, and spacious sedan with a distinct American muscle car vibe. It's worth buying if you prioritize performance and styling over ultimate fuel efficiency and reliability. A used 2016 Charger can be a good value, especially if well-maintained. Consider the R/T or R/T Scat Pack trims for the V8 experience or the SXT for a more fuel-efficient option. Thoroughly inspect any used Charger for maintenance records and potential issues before purchasing. Avoid modified vehicles unless you know the history and trust the quality of the work.

The best car ever.

Car may not be exact model but it is fast and nice and the best car on the streets . You have to have certain cars to top this car.

Dodge Charger R/T exceeded ALL of my expectations!

I LOVE this car! Extremely good build quality. Far more electronic creature features than I expected, and never any reliability problems, even after 4+ years of ownership. Great power! And the seating positions is perfect for me. Nice ride on smooth roads, and surprisingly stiff suspension, that shows up on bumpy roads. Gas mileage is worse than EPA ratings for city mileage, but way better than EPA for highway mileage.

Solid car and excellent ride quality.

These cars are very solid and an excellent value. With roads damaged and many potholes having a more durable car is very safe. There is a reason three are used in severe duties like police and state patrol.

Great Unexpected Purchase!

I had a great experience with Andy. He helped me find a great deal in a very efficient, friendly and transparent process. He has also been very helpful and responsive after I got the car and has become my reliable point of contact in the dealership. I strongly recommend him..
