2010 Toyota Sequoia Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.75
Based on 22 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV, known for its spaciousness and reliability. Introduced in 2001 as Toyota's answer to American SUVs, the Sequoia offered a robust alternative. The 2010 model, part of the second generation (2008-2022), came in SR5, Limited, and Platinum trims. It was popular due to its ample seating for up to eight passengers, powerful V8 engine options, and Toyota's reputation for dependability. Pricing ranged from approximately $40,000 to $60,000 when new.
The Good

The 2010 Sequoia boasts strong V8 performance and Toyota's legendary reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious and comfortable interior, along with its commanding presence, adds an emotional draw. While fuel efficiency isn't its forte, the Sequoia offers immense passenger and cargo capacity, making it ideal for large families and those needing serious towing capability.

The Bad

The 2010 Sequoia's weaknesses include poor fuel economy, a bulky size that makes it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces, and a relatively dated interior design compared to some competitors. Watch out for potential issues with the air suspension (if equipped) and ensure regular maintenance has been performed on the transmission and drivetrain.

What Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Sequoia Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Toyota Sequoia are relatively minor compared to some competitors, but they do exist. One common issue is related to the air suspension system (available on higher trims), which can experience leaks or compressor failures. This can lead to a saggy rear end and require costly repairs. Some owners have also reported issues with the secondary air injection system, which can trigger a check engine light.

Another area of concern is rust, particularly in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Inspect the undercarriage carefully for signs of corrosion. Transmission issues, although not widespread, have been reported, so ensuring proper maintenance with regular fluid changes is crucial.

Recalls for the 2010 Sequoia were issued for concerns related to floor mat entrapment of the accelerator pedal and potential issues with the brake system actuator. Always check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability is generally good, but regular maintenance is key to preventing major issues. Some owners have reported issues with the power tailgate failing, which can be an expensive repair. Overall, the Sequoia is known for its durability, but addressing potential issues promptly is vital.

How long will the 2010 Toyota Sequoia last?

Based on owner data and typical maintenance habits, a 2010 Toyota Sequoia can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles with proper care. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge over time. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in colder climates. The air suspension system (if equipped) is prone to failure. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity. The 5.7L V8 is generally robust, but listen for unusual noises, and check for leaks.

This is an excellent running vehilcle, I expect it to last a long time. It has some design flaws like radio knobs so far away from driver and passenger but you get over it. In addition, it's a 5.7L V-8 gas hog. Last but not least, it's a boring looking vehilce with little in the way of good looking, it's very large. It's the Sequoia Limited, not the SR-5

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Toyota Sequoia offered a reasonable array of built-in tech for its time. Standard features included a six-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims added a JBL Synthesis sound system with up to 14 speakers. Optional features included a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a nine-inch display, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but it did have a rearview camera on the Limited and Platinum trims. Safety features included Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2010 Toyota Sequoia are as follows: Overall Vehicle Score: 4 out of 5 stars; Frontal Crash: 4 stars (driver and passenger); Side Crash: 5 stars (driver and passenger); Rollover: 3 stars. It's important to note that crash test methodologies have evolved since 2010, so direct comparisons with newer vehicles can be misleading. Overall, the 2010 Sequoia provided adequate safety for its era, but lacked some of the advanced driver-assistance systems found in more recent models.

2010 Toyota Sequoia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Toyota Sequoia ranged from approximately $40,000 for the base SR5 model to $60,000 for the fully loaded Platinum. Current used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Sequoia has depreciated significantly, but Toyota's reputation for reliability helps it retain value compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, rust, and the presence of desirable features like the 5.7L V8 and four-wheel drive. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices.

2010 Toyota Sequoia Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Toyota Sequoia is generally costly to own. Insurance costs are moderate to high, reflecting its size and potential repair expenses. Fuel costs are substantial due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance costs are average for a large SUV, but repairs can be expensive, especially for the air suspension. While Toyota reliability mitigates some costs, the Sequoia is not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers. Factor in higher-than-average tire costs as well.

2010 Toyota Sequoia Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Toyota Sequoia is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Toyota Sequoia Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Toyota Sequoia competed against the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. In terms of reliability, the Sequoia generally outperforms its American rivals. Performance is comparable, especially with the 5.7L V8, though the Expedition offered slightly better handling. Features were similar across the board, but the Sequoia's interior felt slightly dated compared to some competitors.

Price-wise, the Sequoia was typically more expensive than the Tahoe and Expedition but offered better resale value. The Nissan Armada provided a similar level of performance and features at a slightly lower price point. A better alternative, if fuel economy is a concern, would be a newer SUV or crossover, though they wouldn't offer the same level of towing capacity or passenger space. Another alternative might be a carefully maintained Chevrolet Suburban, offering similar capabilities at a potentially lower initial cost, but with potentially higher long-term maintenance expenses.

Ultimately, the Sequoia shines in reliability and overall robustness. If those are top priorities, the Sequoia is a solid choice. If a more modern interior or better fuel economy are desired, rivals like the newer Ford Expedition (though potentially less reliable) or the GMC Yukon (more expensive but refined) might be preferable.

Ranks #124 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Toyota Sequoia a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Toyota Sequoia is ideal for large families or those who frequently need to tow heavy loads. Its spaciousness and strong V8 engine make it well-suited for these tasks. Whether it's worth buying depends on your priorities. If reliability and durability are paramount, and you're willing to accept poor fuel economy, it's a good choice. It's best purchased used, as the depreciation has already occurred. The Limited or Platinum trims offer more desirable features. Ensure a thorough inspection for rust and maintenance records are available. Avoid models with neglected maintenance, especially concerning the transmission.

10 years old, always starts instantly

The sequoia has been extremely reliable and has never left me stranded over the course of the ten years I’ve owned it. It is very spacious and can comfortably seat 7/8 adults depending on the seat options. While it handles like a truck (being based on the platform of the Toyota Tundra), its 5.7 liter dohc v8 has more than adequate power, a very torquey feel, and great acceleration, especially for its size. By today’s standards its interior and exterior styling may be slightly dated but it’s simple, reliable, and built with indestructible build quality. It is a solid option for a 2010’s suv, most are now valued from around 15,000-20,00 dollars.

Best SUV I've owned

This SUV met all my needs for a family car with tons of front & back seat leg room, DVD system with wireless headset for the kids to watch movies while you can listen to stereo system. Towed amazing & didn't know I had a trailer attached. Tow breaking system stays with truck & ready to tow. Very comfortable to drive & reliable. You will LOVE this SUV!

Great value. Built like a tank.

I got a great deal on a used Sequoia. It drives very well, and the interior looks next to new. Everything functions as it should, and engine and transmission run very smoothly.

Nice!

We love the size and performance! Nimble, powerful and looks great. Lots of leg room to stretch out and get comfortable. Best family vehicle we have owned.

Toyota Sequoia

I have been a fan of toyota's for years and I was not disappointed when I started looking into a larger SUV for towing/camping purposes. So far I have been very impressed with it and look forward to enjoying it with my family.
