Rating: 4.73
Based on 20 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV known for its spaciousness and rugged capabilities. Part of the second generation (2008-2022), it offers three trims: SR5, Limited, and Platinum. Originally designed to compete with American SUVs, the Sequoia provides ample seating and towing capacity. Its popularity stems from Toyota's reputation for reliability and durability, making it a solid choice for families needing a large, capable vehicle. Pricing ranged from approximately $40,000 to $60,000 when new.
The Good

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia excels in performance with its powerful V8 engine and comfortable ride. Toyota's renowned reliability provides peace of mind for practical buyers, while its spacious interior and available luxury features offer an enjoyable experience, appealing to emotional needs for comfort and status. Its robust design and towing capacity add to its overall value.

The Bad

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia's weaknesses include its poor fuel economy, a common issue for large SUVs. Potential buyers should watch out for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Also, inspect the air suspension system (if equipped) for leaks or malfunctions, as repairs can be costly. Interior plastics can feel dated compared to rivals.

What Problems Does the 2011 Toyota Sequoia Have?

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue involves the air suspension system (found on Platinum trims), which can develop leaks and require costly repairs. Rust is another potential concern, particularly in regions with heavy road salt usage; check undercarriage, door seams, and wheel wells for corrosion. Some owners have reported issues with the secondary air injection system, leading to check engine lights and potential performance problems.
Recalls for the 2011 Sequoia have included concerns related to the accelerator pedal potentially being trapped by floor mats, although this was addressed with a recall fix. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the longevity of the air suspension and the potential for rust in specific climates. Maintaining proper fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly extend the Sequoia's lifespan. It's also advisable to inspect the brakes and suspension components during routine maintenance due to the vehicle's weight and towing capacity. Check the vehicle history report for any previous accidents or maintenance records.

How long will the 2011 Toyota Sequoia last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Toyota Sequoia can easily reach 250,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses include potential rust issues (especially in northern climates) and the air suspension system on Platinum models, which may require attention after 10+ years. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity. Watch for wear and tear on suspension components and brake systems due to the vehicle's weight.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia features a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard features include stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Entertainment options include a standard audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input; higher trims offer a JBL premium sound system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Driver-assistance features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles, with optional features like parking sensors and a rearview camera.
The Platinum trim offers adaptive cruise control (Dynamic Laser Cruise Control). Safety features include standard Toyota's Star Safety System. Crash test ratings from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance, although specific ratings can vary depending on the year and testing methodologies. Keep in mind that technology has advanced significantly since 2011, so features like blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are not available. The navigation system, available on higher trims, is dated by today's standards, but it's functional. The Sequoia prioritizes safety and passenger comfort with its spacious interior and robust construction.

2011 Toyota Sequoia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Toyota Sequoia ranged from approximately $40,000 to $60,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation is moderate for a large SUV, thanks to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has desirable features like four-wheel drive or the rear-seat entertainment system. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2011 Toyota Sequoia Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia is generally costly to own. Fuel costs are high due to poor fuel economy. Insurance rates are moderate, reflecting the vehicle's size and safety features. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate to high, especially if the air suspension system requires attention. While Toyota reliability helps, its sheer size means parts are more expensive. Long-term, rust prevention is vital to minimize body repairs. Overall, it's not an economical choice.

2011 Toyota Sequoia Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Toyota Sequoia is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Toyota Sequoia Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia competes with the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. In terms of reliability, the Sequoia generally surpasses the Tahoe and Expedition. Performance is comparable across the board, with each offering powerful V8 engines. Features are similar, although the Ford Expedition offers independent rear suspension for slightly improved ride quality.
Price-wise, the Sequoia often holds its value better than its American rivals. However, the Nissan Armada offers a more modern interior and potentially lower used prices. If reliability is paramount, the Sequoia is a strong choice. However, if a more comfortable ride or a more modern interior is desired, the Ford Expedition or Nissan Armada might be better alternatives. The Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban offer more trim level and engine options but may not match Toyota's long-term dependability. All vehicles in this class suffer from poor fuel economy.

Ranks #116 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Toyota Sequoia a Good Wagon?

The 2011 Toyota Sequoia is ideal for large families needing a reliable and spacious SUV with significant towing capacity. It's worth buying used, especially if reliability is a top priority. Look for well-maintained examples with comprehensive service records. The Limited or Platinum trims offer more features, but the SR5 can be a good value if you don't need all the bells and whistles. Avoid models with excessive rust or air suspension problems. If fuel economy is a major concern, this isn't the vehicle for you. Overall, a well-cared-for 2011 Sequoia offers excellent value and dependability for those who need a large, capable SUV.

Best car to have while raising my daugter.

This car met all of my needs. Currently, I use the car mainly for commuting to work, since my daughter is 18 and now has her own car. Lots of leg room and storage for long trips. Seats 7 and has 8 cup holders which is great when I used to drive my daughter and her friends to soccer games, movies, etc. Has a great sound system, DVD player, and USB port. I can't say enough about it's safety. I previously owned a 2001 Sequoia and was in a very bad accident where the car spun and rolled down an embankment. All airbags were deployed and the front windshield and driver's side glass was broken. I got out with only scratches on my hands and some bruising from the steering wheel. Outstanding family vehicle

Most comfortable car I've ever owned

I'm a big guy and love the upright seating position and leg room. I used to have back problems, but they disappeared within a few weeks of switching from a Camry. Then several years ago I rented a regular car at an airport and within two days my back problems had returned in spades. Lesson learned. I also like the huge amount of cargo space - for Burning Man and road trips. Great acceleration, smooth ride. I've also taken it off road a few times, especially in Death Valley where it had no trouble getting out to Racetrack Playa. Center differential lock works wonders in deep sand at Anza-Borrego. Of course the size can be a disadvantage on tight trails or when parking in San Francisco. The only reliability issue I've had was a bunch of seals that had to be replaced under warranty. But I hope Toyota are still making them in a few years time when I'll be ready for a new one.

Well thought-out design, inside and out. Reliable in snow and desert heat. Towing trailers is barely noticeable. Spacious and comfortable for long trips. Couldn't choose better!

Awesome full size 8 seat SUV

I wanted 8 seats with large 2nd row door and rear seat that fold away at the push of a button. I compared this SUV with all other full size brands and it has everything I want and more.
