The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV built for hauling families and cargo. It's offered in a traditional SUV body style and was part of the second generation, running from 2008-2022. Key trims include SR5, Limited, and Platinum. New, it ranged from approximately $34,000 to $53,000. The Sequoia's known for its spacious interior, powerful V8 engine, and Toyota's reputation for reliability, making it a popular choice for those needing a large, dependable SUV.
The Good

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia offers robust V8 performance and renowned Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious and comfortable interior, combined with a commanding presence, caters to emotional needs for family security and road trip adventures. While efficiency isn't its strong suit, it provides good overall value for its size and capabilities.

The Bad

Fuel economy is a significant weakness of the 2008 Sequoia. Owners should watch out for potential rust issues, particularly in areas with road salt. Suspension components, especially the air suspension on higher trims, can require maintenance. Also, be mindful of potential transmission issues at higher mileages; a thorough inspection is recommended.

What Problems Does the 2008 Toyota Sequoia Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Toyota Sequoia include issues related to the secondary air injection system, which can trigger a check engine light and require expensive repairs. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas where road salt is used. Pay close attention to the undercarriage, frame, and body panels.

Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, particularly at higher mileages. Symptoms can include slipping or rough shifting. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial for preventative maintenance.

The air suspension system, standard on the Platinum trim, is known to be prone to failure over time, leading to costly repairs or replacement. Consider this potential expense when evaluating a Platinum model.

While the 2008 Sequoia has a relatively good reliability record overall, it's crucial to have any used vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase. Check for any outstanding recalls on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Some recalls may have addressed issues related to the accelerator pedal or floor mats, so ensuring these have been resolved is vital.

How long will the 2008 Toyota Sequoia last?

With proper maintenance, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles with consistent care. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items are crucial for longevity.

Long-term durability is generally a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge in the form of rust, suspension wear (especially air suspension), and potential transmission issues at high mileage. Proper rustproofing and proactive maintenance can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Ignoring minor issues can lead to more significant problems down the road.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features typically included a CD player, tri-zone climate control, and power windows and locks. Higher trims like the Limited and Platinum added features like a JBL sound system, leather upholstery, and a power liftgate.

Entertainment options included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system (available on higher trims), providing a way to keep passengers occupied on long trips. Navigation was also an available option, though the system's interface might feel dated compared to modern systems.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to today's standards. Adaptive cruise control was available on the Platinum trim, a notable feature for the time. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), and multiple airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show good performance for the 2008 Sequoia. However, it's always recommended to review specific crash-test results for different types of collisions on the NHTSA website to get a comprehensive understanding of its safety performance. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2008.

2008 Toyota Sequoia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Toyota Sequoia ranged from around $34,000 for the base SR5 to upwards of $53,000 for a fully loaded Platinum model. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

The Sequoia has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for large SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage and a well-documented maintenance record command higher prices. The 5.7L V8 engine is generally more desirable, positively impacting resale. Rust-free examples are also highly sought after.

2008 Toyota Sequoia Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is generally considered costly to own. Insurance rates are typically moderate to high, reflecting its size and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. While Toyota reliability is a plus, maintenance and repairs can be expensive, especially for the air suspension and transmission. Routine maintenance, like oil changes, is reasonable, but unexpected repairs can quickly add up. Overall, be prepared for higher-than-average long-term ownership costs.

2008 Toyota Sequoia Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Toyota Sequoia is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Toyota Sequoia Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia competed against the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. In terms of reliability, the Sequoia often outperformed its domestic rivals, though the Armada was also generally reliable. Performance was comparable across the board, with all offering V8 power. Features were also similar, although the Sequoia's interior design might be considered less modern than some competitors.

The Tahoe/Suburban often offered better fuel economy (slightly) and a wider range of configurations. The Expedition provided a more comfortable ride and independent rear suspension. The Armada offered a lower price point when new, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to the 2008 Sequoia could include a newer, used Toyota Sequoia (if budget allows) for updated features and potentially lower mileage. A Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban might be considered if fuel economy is a higher priority, but be mindful of reliability concerns. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. If reliability and spaciousness are paramount, the Sequoia remains a strong contender.

Ranks #138 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Toyota Sequoia a Good Vehicle?

The 2008 Toyota Sequoia is ideal for large families needing a spacious and reliable SUV with towing capabilities. It's worth buying used if you prioritize reliability and interior space over fuel efficiency and modern technology. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, preferably with the 5.7L V8 engine. Pay close attention to potential rust and air suspension issues, especially on Platinum models. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Avoid neglected examples with high mileage or signs of deferred maintenance. Consider the Limited trim as a good balance of features and value.

Best Large SUV

Had a 2005 Limited for five years and just replaced it with a 2008 Limited. The 2008 is better in every way. The 5.7l motor provides “muscle car” performance for this 6000lb SUV. You can fit 275/65/20 (34”) tires without modification - previous owner did a body color grill surround and LED headlights to upgrade the look. With a light foot i can average near 15 mpgs and up to 18 on the highway- not bad for something with the comfort and space of most living rooms lol. Easily the best vehicle I have owned in 40+ years of driving
