The 2018 Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV, known for its robust capabilities and spacious interior. Part of the second generation (2008-2022), the 2018 model offers a classic SUV experience. Key trims include the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, and Platinum. Pricing ranges approximately from $48,000 to $68,000 when new. It stands out for its reliability, ample seating for up to eight passengers, and strong towing capacity, making it popular with families needing a workhorse vehicle.
The Good

The 2018 Sequoia offers strong V8 performance and legendary Toyota reliability. Comfort is high with spacious seating and a smooth ride. While design is traditional, it evokes a sense of rugged capability. It appeals to practical buyers with its durability and to emotional buyers with its feeling of security and adventure-readiness.

The Bad

The 2018 Sequoia's primary weaknesses include its poor fuel economy and dated infotainment system. The ride can be bouncy, and the third-row seat isn't as easily accessible as some rivals. Watch out for rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Check the transmission for smooth shifting and listen for any unusual noises from the rear differential.

What Problems Does the 2018 Toyota Sequoia Have?

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia generally enjoys good reliability, but some issues have been reported. Common problems include issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failures. Some owners have reported issues with the secondary air injection system, leading to check engine lights. Rust can be a concern, especially on the undercarriage and frame, especially in colder climates where road salt is used extensively. There have been some recalls issued for the Sequoia, including recalls related to the fuel pump which can fail and cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. It's important to check the vehicle's recall history with the NHTSA using the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns mostly revolve around the wear and tear of suspension components due to the vehicle's weight and size. Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate potential issues. While not a frequent issue, some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, specifically rough shifting or delayed engagement. It is advisable to perform a thorough inspection of any used 2018 Sequoia, paying close attention to these areas of concern.

How long will the 2018 Toyota Sequoia last?

With proper maintenance, the 2018 Toyota Sequoia can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing well over 10 years of service. Toyota's reputation for reliability is well-earned, and the Sequoia is no exception. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items are critical. Potential long-term weaknesses include suspension components, as the vehicle is heavy, and the exhaust system, especially in areas with road salt. Transmission servicing every 60,000 miles is also highly recommended. The engine itself is generally very durable if properly maintained.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia offers a mix of standard and optional tech, entertainment, and safety features. Standard on all trims is a rearview camera and Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.

Entertainment features include a 6.1-inch touchscreen on the SR5, upgrading to a 7-inch screen with navigation on the Limited and Platinum trims. A rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch display is available on the Platinum. Bluetooth connectivity and USB ports are standard.

Driver-assistance features are limited compared to newer vehicles. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on the Limited and Platinum trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are somewhat dated, reflecting the Sequoia's older design. The NHTSA gave the 2018 Sequoia four out of five stars for overall safety. The IIHS has not fully tested the 2018 model, but prior year models received marginal and acceptable scores in some crash test categories.

Overall, the Sequoia's tech is functional but not cutting-edge, prioritizing reliability over the latest gadgets.

2018 Toyota Sequoia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Toyota Sequoia ranged from approximately $48,000 for the SR5 to $68,000 for the Platinum. Current used market prices range from $30,000 to $45,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is relatively slow due to Toyota's reputation for reliability and the Sequoia's popularity as a large family SUV. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, and geographic location (demand for SUVs varies regionally). Lower mileage examples and higher trim levels command premium prices.

2018 Toyota Sequoia Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia is generally costly to own. Insurance rates are moderate to high due to its size and value. Fuel costs are substantial due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance costs are average for a large SUV, but repairs can be expensive, especially for drivetrain components. Long-term ownership costs are higher than smaller SUVs or cars, primarily due to fuel consumption and the potential for expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. While reliable, larger components inevitably require replacement over time.

2018 Toyota Sequoia Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Toyota Sequoia is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Toyota Sequoia Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia competes with the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. In terms of reliability, the Sequoia generally outperforms the Chevrolet Tahoe and Nissan Armada. The Ford Expedition offers better fuel economy and more modern features. Performance is similar across the board, with all offering strong V8 engines.

The Sequoia's infotainment system is dated compared to its rivals. The Ford Expedition offers more advanced technology and a more comfortable ride. The Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban provides more cargo space, especially in the Suburban's extended-length version. The Nissan Armada offers a lower price point but may not match the Sequoia's long-term reliability.

If fuel economy and modern features are priorities, the Ford Expedition is a better alternative. If maximum cargo space is needed, consider the Chevrolet Suburban. For those prioritizing bullet-proof reliability and are okay with a more traditional SUV experience, the Sequoia remains a strong contender. Similar alternatives include the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, which are upscale versions of the Tahoe and Suburban, respectively.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Toyota Sequoia a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2018 Toyota Sequoia is ideal for buyers prioritizing reliability, seating capacity, and towing capability over fuel economy and modern technology. It's a good choice for large families who need a dependable vehicle for long trips and heavy-duty tasks. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. A used 2018 Sequoia represents good value if purchased with a thorough inspection and maintenance history. The SR5 and Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value. Avoid models with excessive rust or signs of neglect. If modern features and better fuel economy are essential, consider alternatives.

We love it

This car is just what we needed! Lots of space and leg room. Not much Ò€œtrunkÒ€ space and pretty terrible gas mileage, but we knew what we were getting and get that the benefits outweighed those 2 issues.

Loving my 2018 Toyota Sequoia Platinum

Aaaahh! Where to begin, very spacious, love the way it drives, luxurious! Love the safety features, auto headlights and all the storing compartments. Love the wood work in it, don't have all the space to type all good stuff that the Sequoia has, but I love it all Γ°ΕΈΛœβ€ž

Very spacious

We had a 4-runner before the Sequoia but needed more room. It is so easy to drive given how large it is. I will never go back to any other vehicle.
