The 2009 Jeep Patriot is a compact SUV that offers Jeep styling and capability at an affordable price. It's a 5-door SUV introduced in 2007. Key trims include the Sport, Latitude, and Limited. New, it ranged roughly from $17,000 to $23,000. Its boxy design, available four-wheel drive, and Jeep heritage make it popular among budget-conscious buyers seeking a rugged appearance and decent off-road potential.
The Good

The 2009 Jeep Patriot offers a blend of affordability and Jeep's rugged image. It appeals to practical buyers with its low price and decent fuel economy (for its class). Emotionally, it provides the appeal of owning a Jeep with available 4x4, making it feel capable and adventurous. While not luxurious, it's a functional and value-oriented option.

The Bad

The 2009 Jeep Patriot has some known weaknesses. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is prone to issues and can be costly to repair. The interior materials feel cheap and the engine can feel underpowered, especially with the CVT. Reliability can be a concern, so a thorough inspection is vital before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2009 Jeep Patriot Have?

The 2009 Jeep Patriot has several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. The most significant issue is the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). It's prone to failure, often requiring expensive repairs or replacement. Symptoms include slipping, hesitation, and unusual noises.
Other common issues include:
  • Water leaks into the cabin, particularly around the windshield and sunroof (if equipped).
  • Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the instrument cluster.
  • Premature brake wear.
  • Suspension issues, including worn ball joints and tie rod ends.
  • Engine problems, such as oil leaks and rough idling.
Recalls for the 2009 Patriot have addressed issues like faulty airbag inflators. Long-term reliability is generally considered below average compared to other compact SUVs. The CVT issue is a recurring theme across multiple model years of the Patriot. Owners should check the vehicle's history for prior repairs and recalls before purchasing. Pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, especially focusing on the transmission's condition.

How long will the 2009 Jeep Patriot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Jeep Patriot can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, its long-term durability is heavily dependent on how well it's been maintained, particularly regarding the CVT. Neglecting transmission fluid changes can significantly shorten its lifespan. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing any issues promptly are crucial. The CVT and potential for water leaks remain the primary long-term weaknesses. Rust can also become a problem in regions with harsh winters.

I bought mine for a winter vehicle, was a great buy, I have the North edition, remote start, heated seats, 4x4, tinted windows, 17รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร‚ย alloy wheels, love it

This car met all of my needs when I first purchased it. Although it still runs well I'm upgrading to a larger vehicle to fit my needs, but I wish I could keep it around!

I love my Jeep! It?s a good size, good on gas, gas the amenities I want. But! The transmission is terrible, constantly jerking and missing, when it rains water leaks from my dome light (common problem apparently), AND don?t expect to win any races because when this car is in between 25-35 miles per hour the transmission doesn?t know what to do! It?s like it spazzes out!

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK!!! 0 stars Purchased a brand new 2009 Jeep Patriot Limited in late 2008 at my local Spring, TX Chrysler Jeep dealer. I loved my Patriot and I am now the sucker! 18 months after purchase the CVT tranny went out and was replaced under warranty. That concerned me but I still loved my Patriot! But this is what makes this car worthless-Suddenly and with no warning my key fob wouldn't open my car. I was able to start it using the key but then the check engine light came on and none of the electrical systems were working properly. I got home and read some blogs and found one where a guy said his wife's was doing the same thing and he advised popping in and out the white fuse box (the reset). I tried it and it worked so I went straight the dealer to get my car fixed. Had the tech come out and explained it to him and he turned the car off and sure enough had to pop out and in the reset fuse box to start the car. I left the car to get repaired (should have been a piece of cake right? NOT!!) I also had to rent a vehicle to go to work. The next day they called me to ask me to come in to the dealer. I did and when I spoke to my service advisor at Auto Nation Spring, Tx she explained that the part that needs to be replaced is called a gauge cluster. She then explains that Chrysler no longer makes that part and that my best option is to call around to find a company that specializes in clusters or check the junk yard. Oh and if that isn't bad enough she tells me that even if I can find the part they can't install it for legal reasons. And they still charged me $90.00 for the diagnostic! So I came home called Chrysler and opened a case and was given a case
Awful Car
AWFUL CAR... bought from Awful dealer Bayside Dodge who cannot seem to fix it at all. Everything has gone wrong and their mechanics cannot seem to fix it at all.

I have never owned a car that was created with such shoddy craftsmanship as the Jeep patriot. I purchased this SUV used, as a second owner, and this is by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. At the time of the purchase, the vehicle was still well under the 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper manufacturer's warranty and was two years old. After the first rainstorm, the sunroof leaked all over the carpet and spewed out of the dome light and on to my lap after the first right hand turn. When I say leak, what I actually mean is this thing created a 3 inch deep lake in the rear passenger footwell that consumed the entire area of the footwell. The water also leaks to the front footwell, shorting out the vehicle electronics. When the vehicle electronics short out, the car will not shut off after being started, and the electronics click off and on all night, until it wears the battery down. When taken to the Chrysler dealership 3 times while under the warranty (with technical service bulletin in-hand demonstrating step-by-step how to fix the exact problem) they decided to ignore the instructions and proceeded to run a hose over the sunroof, claiming that they couldn't see a problem. If they would've spent a minute to run water through the drain tubes, the problem would've been identified. When I reported the issue to Chrysler, they made half-hearted promises to help get the issue resolved, but they really didn't do anything to resolve the matter. Chrysler has denied fixing anything with this vehicle since the warranty ran out, and I'm still stuck with this pile of xxxx of a vehicle. Please avoid any year of the Jeep Patriot at all cost, and steer clear of Chrysler. The dealerships are aware of this problem (the service manager informed me) but they continue to sell leaking patriots in 2014+

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Jeep Patriot's built-in tech and entertainment features are basic by today's standards. Standard features typically include a CD player with an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims might offer a premium sound system.
Driver-assistance features are limited. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) were standard. Optional safety features included side curtain airbags.
Safety features:
  • Standard: Anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, front airbags.
  • Optional: Side curtain airbags, side-impact airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA varied. The NHTSA gave it mixed ratings, with some good scores and some lower scores for frontal and side impacts. The IIHS ratings were also a mix of "Good", "Acceptable", and "Marginal" depending on the test. Its safety technology lags behind modern vehicles. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning available. Optional features like fog lamps and remote start were also available. Overall, the tech and safety features are minimal compared to newer vehicles.

2009 Jeep Patriot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Jeep Patriot had an MSRP ranging from approximately $17,000 to $23,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Patriot has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability concerns (especially the CVT), and dated features. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, whether it has the 4x4 option, and its geographic location (demand for 4x4s varies).

2009 Jeep Patriot Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Jeep Patriot can be relatively economical in terms of fuel consumption (especially the 2.0L FWD model) and insurance costs, which are generally lower than larger SUVs. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if the CVT needs replacement. Long-term ownership costs are heavily influenced by the vehicle's reliability; potential CVT issues and other repairs can make it costly in the long run. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

2009 Jeep Patriot Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Jeep Patriot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Jeep Patriot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Jeep Patriot competes with compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape. Compared to these rivals, the Patriot lags behind in terms of performance, reliability, and features. The CR-V and RAV4 offer superior reliability and resale value, while the Escape provides a more refined driving experience. However, the Patriot is often significantly cheaper than these alternatives.
In terms of off-road capability, the Patriot (with Freedom Drive II) offers better performance than many of its rivals, but at the expense of on-road comfort and fuel economy. Alternatives to the Patriot include the Subaru Forester, which offers standard all-wheel drive and better reliability. If budget is the primary concern, a used Mazda Tribute (related to the Ford Escape) could be a similar alternative, offering better reliability than the Patriot, or even a newer, more reliable compact car might be a better choice for long-term cost savings if 4x4 is not a priority. Ultimately, the Patriot's low price is its biggest selling point, but buyers should be aware of the potential reliability issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Jeep Patriot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Jeep Patriot is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize Jeep styling and are willing to accept potential reliability risks. It's worth buying *only* if it's available at a very low price and has been thoroughly inspected by a mechanic, particularly checking the CVT's condition. A well-maintained model with the manual transmission is preferable to avoid CVT issues. It's best suited for those who need basic transportation and appreciate the Jeep image, but understand it's not the most reliable or refined choice. Consider it only if other, more reliable compact SUVs are significantly outside your budget.

Constantly doing repairs

I bought this car used from the dealership and have nothing but problems...front end has been done 2x bearings have been done 2x, rear end is making a clunk on right turns mechanic says it needs to be re-done. I've had multiple mechanics tell me they do a lot of the same repairs on the patriots and would never recommend them. I'll be trading it in ASAP
