The 2008 Jeep Patriot is a compact SUV introduced as a more budget-friendly and fuel-efficient option within the Jeep lineup. It features a boxy, traditional Jeep design, appealing to those who appreciate the brand's heritage. Key trims included the base, Sport, and Limited. New, it ranged from approximately $15,000 to $21,000. Its affordability and Jeep styling made it popular among first-time car buyers and those seeking a capable yet economical SUV.
The Good

The 2008 Jeep Patriot's main advantage is its affordability. Practically, it offers decent fuel economy for an SUV and available four-wheel drive for light off-road adventures. Emotionally, its Jeep styling provides a sense of ruggedness and adventure. For some, the simplicity of the interior can be appealing.

The Bad

The 2008 Jeep Patriot is known for its underwhelming engine performance, especially with the base engine. The interior features low-quality materials. Reliability can be a concern, with reports of transmission issues and electrical problems. It's essential to check for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2008 Jeep Patriot Have?

The 2008 Jeep Patriot has several frequently reported problems. One major concern is transmission issues, particularly with the CVT transmission found in models equipped with Freedom Drive II. Owners have reported slipping, shuddering, and complete transmission failure. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and premature wear, are also common. Electrical problems, including issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), can cause a variety of issues. Rust is another significant concern, especially in areas with road salt.

Recalls for the 2008 Patriot included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability is generally considered below average. Specifically, models with the CVT transmission tend to have higher failure rates. Suspension components, such as ball joints and control arms, can wear out quickly, requiring replacement. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate some of these issues. Before purchasing a used 2008 Patriot, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2008 Jeep Patriot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Jeep Patriot can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, its long-term durability is often affected by maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes and transmission fluid services can lead to premature failure, especially with the CVT. Weaknesses include rust, electrical issues, and suspension wear. Models with the 2.4L engine and manual transmission tend to be more durable than those with the CVT. Careful owners who address issues promptly can extend the vehicle's lifespan.

Car is good choice for me. Plenty of room inside, comfortable for type of car and lots of features. I wish it had a six cylinder engine because the four cylinder struggles on the hills.
Fenyx
Was a good little jeep but a bit sluggish on acceleration. Also had a lot of suspension issues with sway bar links and premature wear of lower control arms and ball joints. Other then that, if you want a cheaper SUV then you get what you pay for.

I drive a 2008 Jeep partiot (standard) I love her. She works well. With her age I've had a couple or issues but nothing that doesn't come with the age of the car

Car is just a piece of junk and will burn your wallet to oblivion. With this I'll never buy another Jeep again. I got videos and proof of what a hex this xxx is.
Korbyn
Had this car for about 2 years now. Only has about 170k miles on it. Was okay at first, has been a money pit since. As of today, writing this review, MORE problems arose with it. I would not recommend this model (or the year at least), I would recommend saving your money and buying something better.
SnowinNY
I wish I never bought this vehicle. The power in it died after owning it a few months. When I went to put my window down the heat would shut off. So I cut the wire and put in cranks for the window. I had a problem with putting gas in the car. My mechanic couldn't figure out the problem but I could only get gas at Stewarts gas station. If I got it anywhere else as I drove out of the gas station parking lot my vehicle would stall as I was driving. Because of this I couldn't take my Jeep out of town. This was my biggest problem with the Jeep! It was spacious that I could fit bigger items in the back with the seats folded down. However the headrests were very uncomfortable. It did handle very well in the snow & we get a lot in Upstate NY.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Jeep Patriot offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered options like satellite radio and upgraded speakers. Driver-assistance features were limited, with available features like antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Safety features included standard front airbags and side-curtain airbags. Optional features included anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. Some tests showed acceptable performance, while others revealed weaknesses, particularly in side-impact crashes. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted tests, with results indicating marginal to acceptable performance in certain categories. Overall, the 2008 Patriot's safety features were basic compared to modern vehicles. Optional features like side airbags and ESC were crucial for improved safety.

2008 Jeep Patriot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Jeep Patriot ranged from approximately $15,000 to $21,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Patriot has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability concerns, and overall market perception. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has the preferred 2.4L engine and manual transmission. Models with the CVT transmission tend to have lower resale values.

2008 Jeep Patriot Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Jeep Patriot generally falls into the economical category for insurance and fuel costs. However, maintenance and repair costs can be unpredictable. While basic maintenance is affordable, potential transmission issues (especially with the CVT) and electrical problems can lead to significant repair bills. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. If major repairs are needed, the Patriot can become costly to own, offsetting its initial affordability.

2008 Jeep Patriot Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Jeep Patriot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Jeep Patriot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and even the Nissan Rogue of the same year, the 2008 Jeep Patriot falls short in several areas. Its performance is less refined, the interior materials are cheaper, and its reliability ratings are generally lower. While the Patriot is more affordable than these competitors, the higher initial cost of the rivals often translates to lower long-term ownership costs due to better reliability.

In terms of features, the Patriot offers a more basic package. Competitors typically have more advanced tech and safety features available. The RAV4 and CR-V, in particular, offer superior cargo space and passenger comfort.

Alternatives to the Patriot could include the Mazda CX-7, which offers a sportier driving experience, or the Subaru Forester, known for its standard all-wheel drive and reliability. If budget is a primary concern, a well-maintained used Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, even with slightly higher mileage, could prove to be a better long-term value than the Patriot.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Jeep Patriot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Jeep Patriot is ideal for buyers on a very tight budget who prioritize Jeep styling and are willing to accept compromises in performance, reliability, and interior quality. It's worth buying *used* only if it's in excellent condition, has a documented maintenance history, and has been thoroughly inspected by a mechanic. A model with the 2.4L engine and manual transmission is preferable. Avoid models with the CVT transmission if possible. Be prepared for potential repairs and factor those costs into the overall budget. For most buyers, a more reliable and refined alternative, even at a slightly higher price, would be a better choice.

As much as I think this car was cute it was an absolute

As much as I think this car was cute it was an absolute mechanical nightmare. Had the car only until 87,000 miles. I would not recommend this car to my worst enemy, it was given to me and throughout the 4 years of driving it starting at 45,000 miles it needed almost $10,000 worth of work. Thats not getting anything extra, for example the cars engine failed and the car rolled backwards down a hill, when getting inspected the car was found to have a front tire that was about to fall off, the cars heat and ac would kill the engine power so you would just have to be uncomfortable if you wanted to get on the highway. Although the car was a mechanical nightmare its drive was perfect, everyone I talk to also says they love the way it drives. It's an suv that really drives like a truck, the cargo space was incredible and it did amazing in the snow and the rain even without awd. It's a good car if you're not counting on reliability and have no problem with a 5lb brake. But it comes with a built in flash light!

A Great First Car

I got this car a year ago and it was totally misused by it's previous owners. When I got it I could tell that it had been taken mudding so I was pretty skeptical, but as I got accustomed to it and changed out the suspension and quick struts, my car drove like a dream. It is definitely a great car with great audio. Definitely recommend for new drivers.

i own a 2008 jeep patriot, it's very zippy for a 4 cylinder and with the 5 speed 4x4, it's very capable in any condition. drives smooth and the speakers sound amazing, great ac and heating. lots of room for trips. it's all around an okay car.

Alright: Not the Most Durable, Lasting Vehicle

Needed a car that was decent sized for my first car but reasonably priced. Purchased a 2008 Jeep Patriot with about 85,000 miles and not long after 110,000 I had to get a new one because of transmission, brake, etc. issues. Love how jeeps drive but it scared me away from wanting another one.
