Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 is part of the third-generation Ram trucks, known for their bold styling and powerful engines. Available as a Regular Cab, Quad Cab, or Mega Cab, it offered a range of trims including the ST, SLT, Laramie, and Sport. New pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $35,000. Its muscular design, comfortable ride, and Hemi engine option made it a popular choice, standing out for its aggressive appearance and towing capabilities.
The Good

The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 boasts strong performance, especially with the available Hemi V8, offering impressive towing capacity appealing to practical buyers. The bold, aggressive design and comfortable cabin create an emotional connection. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provided a good value proposition with a blend of capability and style.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 include potential issues with the automatic transmission, especially with the Hemi engine. Rust can be a problem in certain climates, particularly around the wheel wells and undercarriage. Some owners have reported electrical issues and problems with the HVAC system. Check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Have?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 has several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, especially with the 545RFE automatic transmission paired with the Hemi engine, are common; this includes hard shifting and premature failure. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas with road salt, affecting the undercarriage, wheel wells, and body panels. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors, issues with the instrument cluster, and problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), have also been reported. Some model years, including 2006, had recalls related to airbag deployment and fuel tank issues.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the lifespan of the transmission and the potential for rust. The 4.7L engine has been known to develop sludge if not properly maintained. Early models of the third-generation Ram, including the 2006, can exhibit these problems more frequently due to age and wear. Regular maintenance, rust prevention, and addressing any unusual symptoms promptly are crucial for extending the lifespan of a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500.

How long will the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 last?

A well-maintained 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 can easily exceed 200,000 miles. With proper care and consistent maintenance, many owners report over 15 years of service. However, durability largely depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, transmission fluid services, or ignoring rust can significantly shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include rust, transmission wear, and potential engine issues like sludge buildup. Regularly addressing these concerns is essential for long-term reliability. Expect higher repair costs as the vehicle ages.

The truck met my needs and impressed everyone that rode in it. It was a solid ride with plenty of pulling power but had the worst turning radius of any truck I've owned, great sound system , poor radio and very poor gas mileage.
fraternity house management supervisor
only had it, what, 2 months ..bought it from a pre owned car lot in the burbs...the body had a few dings and scratches..my body guy was able to press them out and touch them up..it shined up with a good buffing ...this is my first 4.7 v8...its nice...is getting close to 18mpg average including a good deal of berkeley city driving...it is hard to find an '06 with only 103,000 miles on it so i consider this one a deal...its too early to comment on the reliability of it, but i will say, of the 50+ new rams i've owned reliability is rarely an issue...this truck commutes 25 miles each way to work and the 8 foot bed is often full to the brim with fraternity house stuff and our tools...

This car met my needs. Lots of leg room front/ back. Up to date maintenance. Well taken care of. Smooth riding and great V8 gas saver. Unbelievable but true.

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. For some reason dodge wired the fuel pump relay straight into the circuit board in the fuse box. So you guessed it, when your fuel pump relay because a problem you have to replace the whole fuse box. $1000 fix. Won't be buying another Dodge pickup. Very poor engineering.

My Honda CRV was the perfect vehicle and most reliable but I've ever owned I've never had a single problem with it other than wear and tear issues and it just ran forever no matter what

When i owned this truck,it had the v6 engine, wasn't very powerful got good gas milage,ok towing.I would say go with the v8 and ya got a good truck

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 offered basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard models typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims could feature upgraded sound systems, including Infinity speakers and satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with standard features like antilock brakes (ABS) and available traction control. Safety features included front airbags and available side curtain airbags. Optional features included power-adjustable pedals and a security system.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the cab configuration. Quad Cab models generally received better scores than Regular Cab models. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not exceptionally high, reflecting the safety standards of that era. The 2006 Ram 1500 lacked advanced safety features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, which are common in newer trucks. The focus was primarily on basic safety features and structural design.

For entertainment, some trims included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system as an option, providing added value for families. Overall, the tech and safety features were adequate for the time but are significantly less advanced than what is available in modern trucks.

2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 ranged from approximately $20,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age and wear. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (Hemi models command higher prices), condition (rust-free examples are more valuable), maintenance records, and overall mileage. Lower mileage and well-maintained trucks retain more value. High mileage and rust can drastically reduce the price.

2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 is generally considered moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for a full-size truck. Fuel costs can be high, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to potential issues like transmission problems and rust. Parts are generally affordable, but labor costs can add up. Expect to spend more on maintenance and repairs as the vehicle ages, making it less economical than newer trucks.

2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

Compared to rivals like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 offered a more aggressive and distinctive design. In terms of performance, the Hemi engine was competitive, but fuel economy lagged behind some competitors. Features were generally comparable, although some rivals offered more advanced technology at the time. Reliability is a key area where the Ram 1500 sometimes fell short, with more reported transmission and electrical issues than the F-150 and Silverado.

In terms of price, the Ram 1500 was often competitively priced, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the potential for higher repair costs can offset the initial savings. If reliability is a primary concern, the Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado 1500 might be better alternatives, although they may come at a slightly higher price. The Toyota Tundra is another solid choice known for its long-term reliability, but its styling and features might not appeal to everyone.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities. If you value bold styling and strong performance at a reasonable price and are willing to accept potential reliability risks, the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 can be a good option. However, if reliability is paramount, exploring alternatives is advisable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and stylish truck on a budget. It's worth buying used if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and are willing to perform necessary maintenance. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, especially those with the Hemi engine if performance is a priority. Rust-free trucks are preferable. Avoid neglected or high-mileage trucks without proper maintenance. Specific trims like the Laramie offer more features, but the SLT provides a good balance of features and value. Pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to assess the condition of the transmission, engine, and frame.

2006 Ram SLT

Bought 2006 Ram SLT 4x4. Still own it. 246k miles. Standard maintenance, shocks, struts, power steering pump. Little rust required. Truck is more than most can expect. I wanted a truck that would last and give good service.

After years of GM & Ford, Dodge cured what ailed.

My father instilled GM into me at a very young age and that a Chevy truck was the ONLY one to have aaaand maybe slip in a Ford once in awhile just to confirm you should've bought that Chevy. Well, after years of going with how I was raised when it came to buying trucks, and getting fed up with blown transmissions, gauges that seemed to always fail, or sitting off the highway waiting for roadside assistance, I became curious about what Dodge had to offer. 2006 my first Dodge of any kind, but not any kind of Dodge. 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Crew Cab Lone Star Edition rwd with 5.7l Hemi. Wow from the get go! So I'm gonna defer with the expected poor fuel efficiency and tell you about how bad ass it is that I have one of the most reliable, most capable, powerful, beast of a heavy ass truck that gets great mileage, all while enjoying a comfortable car like interior, but having a commanding view of what's down the road ahead, with a confidence of reliability like I've never known before. I've never owned a more powerful vehicle in my life able to haul & tow whatever needed, and do it without even the slightest bit of hesitation. Fuel efficiency? With 375 lb ft of torque, coupled with 345 horses... Come on, your not buying a Prius folks. What your getting is the reassurance your truck can do what you need it to, then some, and then some more. I average 13-14 mpg's in town, however this is ok cause I'm not driving for any type of people transport, and I average 21 mpg's on the highway. Pretty damn good for the over 6500lbs of truck I'm driving. The only thing I will say I do not like is the braking, numb is the word I'd use, and no everything with the braking system is to par it's just how it feels to me... numb. Overall couldn't be more satisfied in a truck... Reliability has been great... Nothing but normal maintenance: oil & transmission fluid changes, battery, brake pads, an occasional signal or headlight bulb. Still today 2020 everything works, normal maintenance, same fuel mileage, still capable, and I've learned also that one of the nice things about driving a Ram with a 5.7 l Hemi is knowing that you have nothing to prove. Cruising down the highway it will still beat or keep up the best of them!

Manufactured to gouge your pocket

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. For some reason dodge wired the fuel pump relay straight into the circuit board in the fuse box. So you guessed it, when your fuel pump relay because a problem you have to replace the whole fuse box. $1000 fix. Won't be buying another Dodge pickup. Very poor engineering.

More reliable than my GMC

The truck met my needs and impressed everyone that rode in it. It was a solid ride with plenty of pulling power but had the worst turning radius of any truck I've owned, great sound system , poor radio and very poor gas mileage.

my new 2006 ram 1500 slt long bed regular cab...

only had it, what, 2 months ..bought it from a pre owned car lot in the burbs...the body had a few dings and scratches..my body guy was able to press them out and touch them up..it shined up with a good buffing ...this is my first 4.7 v8...its nice...is getting close to 18mpg average including a good deal of berkeley city driving...it is hard to find an '06 with only 103,000 miles on it so i consider this one a deal...its too early to comment on the reliability of it, but i will say, of the 50+ new rams i've owned reliability is rarely an issue...this truck commutes 25 miles each way to work and the 8 foot bed is often full to the brim with fraternity house stuff and our tools...

My Favorite Vehicle

This Dodge RAM 1500 made me love owning a truck. This was my field and farm truck, great for navigating city streets, country roads and hunting fields. Powerful 5.7L Hemi engine got me where I needed to go, towed my boat, hauled and moved furniture, supplies and equipment. Smooth, confident ride that has plenty of life, thanks to engine work done by a professional mechanic who restores vehicles to better than new. Recently moved into a smaller home in town and need to find a new home for the truck as my needs have changed. If you're looking for a practical ride that performs well, this should be your next best ride.
