The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Ram 1500 include fuel economy, particularly with the larger engines. Some owners have reported electrical issues and problems with the Hemi tick. Watch out for rust, especially in areas with road salt. Thorough inspection is crucial before buying.

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 include electrical issues such as malfunctioning sensors and problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause various electrical malfunctions. The "Hemi tick," a ticking noise from the engine, is another common complaint, although its severity and long-term effects are debated. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or slipping. Rust is a concern, especially in areas that use road salt. Recalls for the 2009 Ram 1500 have addressed issues such as potential problems with the fuel tank straps and airbag systems. Long-term reliability can be affected by regular maintenance. Neglecting fluid changes or addressing minor issues promptly can lead to more significant problems down the line. Specifically, earlier models of this generation Ram have been known to have more prevalent issues, with the later model years having some improvements. Before purchasing, it's advisable to check the vehicle's history for any outstanding recalls or maintenance records. It's important to look for signs of rust underneath the vehicle and to test all electrical components.

How long will the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 last?

A 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, with proper maintenance, can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Years of service heavily depend on maintenance habits and driving conditions. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs are crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the aforementioned electrical problems. Suspension components may also require replacement as the vehicle ages. Trucks with diligent maintenance records tend to last longer and require fewer major repairs.

2009 4x4 crew has gotten in my pocket again! dash removed to replace actuator-box. not covered. rust from clogged drain ports on 3 wheel wells. had to pay for some body work (not cheep) hemi still strong at 160,000 replaced water pump and full a/c job. what are ya gonna do, at least I own it.

The truck is a pleasure to drive on long trips and rides so smooth on the highway and the features that the truck has are awesome

I bought this truck used in 2014, with 79k on it. I saw all previous service records, and the person that owned it, took good care of it. I have kept up on care and maintaining the truck, keep it washed through the winter, and it has treated me very well. It has the 5.7 Hemi, 4x4 crewcab. I average about 19 to 20 on the highway and about 13 around the city. I pull a camper and car trailer with it, and it does very well with both. The only thing I did to improve towing, was add a set of airbags inside the rear coils, that did make a big difference. I have 200k on it now, and still a nice comfortable and tight truck.

Burns more gas than a tank and more oil than you can buy in a day. Hemi blew up with less than 20,000 miles. In the shop for two months while dodge put on a couple bandaides. Still a piece of crap!!
TT Ram Owner
The Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 performs as designed, a truck. Highway performance is quiet, yet the little jolts on roadways do remind you it is a truck. Gas mileage is ok (19-23) mpg on the hwy at 65-70 mph, comfort for front seat passenger and driver good, rear seat ok, rear seat back could use more of a recline for added rear seat comfort. Engine reliability is average to above average. I have 160,000 miles on mine and have replaced the abs module, one front wheel bearing, and now a water pump. Four wheel drive performance is above average, but watch your gas hand move. Overall its not a bad truck to own, it has its little rattles and the occasional abs, service 4wd lights come on when the temperature gets below 30 degrees.
duh h8r man
this truck is possibly the worst truck i have ever driven. I got it 3 weeks ago and it has already started to give me trouble.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 offered a reasonable level of tech for its time. Base models (ST) typically featured a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims (SLT, Sport, Laramie) included features like SiriusXM satellite radio, an upgraded sound system, and a navigation system (optional). Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but some models offered features like rear parking sensors.

Safety features included standard front airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC). Optional features included a rearview camera on some trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the cab configuration. Some configurations received good ratings in frontal offset crash tests, while others were marginal. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also varied; it is important to check specific ratings for the chosen cab style. Optional features like adjustable pedals were available to ensure optimal driver positioning for safety and comfort. Overall, the 2009 Ram 1500's tech and safety features were adequate for its time, but significantly less advanced than modern trucks.

2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 competed with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra. In terms of performance, the Ram's Hemi engine offered competitive power. Feature-wise, it held its own, though some rivals may have offered slightly more advanced tech at the time. Reliability is where the Ram sometimes falls short compared to the F-150 and Silverado, with more frequently reported electrical issues. Price-wise, it was generally competitive.

The F-150, particularly, offered a wider range of engine options and a strong reputation for reliability. The Silverado/Sierra twins provided a more traditional truck feel and generally solid dependability.

Alternatives to consider would be a 2009 or newer Ford F-150 or a 2009 or newer Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra if reliability is a top priority. These rivals may offer a more robust ownership experience over the long term. However, if a comfortable ride and a bold design are key factors, the Ram remains a compelling option, provided a thorough pre-purchase inspection is conducted.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 a Good Truck?

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable and capable used truck with a bold design. It's worth buying if you prioritize ride quality and don't mind the potential for slightly lower reliability compared to its rivals. A thorough inspection is crucial, paying close attention to electrical systems, rust, and maintenance records. Specific trims like the Laramie offer more luxurious features, but the SLT provides a good balance of features and value. Avoid neglecting maintenance, as it can lead to costly repairs. Overall, a decent choice with some caveats.
