The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 represents the second generation of this popular pickup truck, known for its bold "big rig" styling. Available in various cab configurations including regular, extended (Club Cab), and quad cab, it was produced from 1994-2002. Key trims include the base model, SLT, and SLT Plus. When new, pricing ranged from around $16,000 to $28,000. Its aggressive appearance and powerful engine options made it a hit with buyers looking for a capable and stylish truck.

The Good

The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 offers robust performance with available V8 engines, appealing to those needing towing and hauling capabilities. Its distinctive "big rig" design is emotionally attractive. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides good value for its price, especially in the used market. Decent comfort levels, especially in higher trims, add to its appeal.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 include potential rust issues, especially in areas with road salt. Transmission problems, particularly with the automatic, are also relatively common. Fuel economy is not its strong suit, and some interior components may exhibit wear and tear. Check the ball joints and suspension components for excessive play.

What Problems Does the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 include transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmissions. Owners have reported slipping, hard shifting, and premature failure. Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas where road salt is used; check the body panels, frame, and undercarriage carefully. Ball joints and other suspension components are prone to wear and may require replacement. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and problems with sensors, are also reported.

Recalls for the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 have addressed issues such as faulty airbags, brake light switch malfunctions, and potential fuel leakage problems. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for a complete list of recalls specific to this model year.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially with high-mileage examples. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for extending the truck's lifespan. Transmission servicing is essential, and rust prevention measures can help preserve the body and frame. The 2000 model year does not have significantly more or fewer specific issues than other model years in the same generation.

How long will the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many examples are still on the road after 20+ years, a testament to their inherent durability. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance and driving habits.

Long-term weaknesses include rust, transmission wear, and suspension component degradation. Ignoring rust will lead to structural issues. Regular transmission fluid changes are critical. Worn ball joints and bushings negatively impact handling and safety. Preventative maintenance addressing these areas is key to maximizing the truck's lifespan.

Almost 200,000 miles so almost everthing has been rebuilt or replaced but the engine and computer. I bought it new and still drive daily for work. It pulls our 24 ft. Boat with ease.

don't know why I traded this truck. loved it and wish I still had it. easy to drive comfortable and lots of room. could haul any thing I would like.
Negative Owner Reviews

Good truck to buy used for work truck since re-sale value is poor. Purchased in 07 with 145,000, has 165,000, 3 years later. Engine still strong. Much front end work required ($2100), just replaced radiator. Tranny was re-built with 127K and doing okay. Temperature control gives hot air and cold air, but nothing in between. Seats very comfy, ride is smooth for old truck, surprisingly quiet ride (best thing). Worst thing is the cracking dash- almost falling in. Local Dodge service manager acted like he'd never seen a Dodge truck with a cracked dash: Bad actor. Dodge will sell you a replacement dash for about $450. I told them that pretty much totaled the truck.

I have put 2 trannies in my truck. they cost more than the truck is worth alone. Plus new steering box. Toyota next time

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 features relatively basic technology compared to modern vehicles. Standard entertainment features typically include an AM/FM radio, with optional upgrades like a cassette player or CD player. Driver-assistance features are limited, consisting mainly of power steering and power brakes.

Safety features include standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

Optional features varied by trim level and could include power windows, power locks, cruise control, and air conditioning. Higher trims might also offer features like leather upholstery and a premium sound system.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are available. While specific scores may vary, the Ram 1500 generally received moderate safety ratings for frontal impacts. Side-impact crash testing was not as prevalent during that era, so data may be limited. It is crucial to remember that safety technology has advanced considerably since 2000, so a modern vehicle will offer significantly greater protection in a crash.

2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 ranged from approximately $16,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim level, cab configuration, and engine. In today's used market, prices typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The Ram 1500 has depreciated significantly over the years. Factors affecting resale value include the truck's overall condition (rust, mechanical issues), mileage, and whether it has been well-maintained. A clean title, regular service records, and desirable options (like a V8 engine and 4x4) can increase its value. Higher trims (SLT Plus) generally command a slightly higher price than base models.

2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 is generally not considered economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate, depending on coverage and driving record. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial due to the vehicle's age and potential for breakdowns. Expect to spend on repairs for common issues like transmission problems, rust, and suspension wear. Long-term ownership requires a proactive approach to maintenance to avoid costly surprises.

2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

Compared to rivals like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 offered a distinctive styling advantage that many buyers appreciated. Performance was comparable, with similar engine options and towing capacities. However, the Ford and Chevy often had an edge in terms of fuel economy and, arguably, long-term reliability.

In terms of features, the Ram was generally on par with its competitors, offering similar trim levels and options. Price-wise, it was often competitive, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

If reliability is a top priority, a well-maintained Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado from the same era might be a slightly better alternative, as they are often considered more durable. However, the Ram's distinctive styling and potentially lower price point can still make it a worthwhile option for those who prioritize aesthetics and affordability. When comparing, consider the specific condition of each truck, as maintenance history plays a crucial role in determining long-term reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 is ideal for someone seeking an affordable, classic-styled pickup truck for occasional use, not as a primary daily driver. It's suitable for DIY enthusiasts who are comfortable with basic maintenance and repairs.

Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the condition and price. A well-maintained example with minimal rust and a documented service history can be a decent purchase, especially if found at a lower price than its competitors. Avoid trucks with obvious signs of neglect or major mechanical issues. The V8 engines offer better performance, but the V6 can be a more economical choice for light-duty tasks. Thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial before making a purchase.

Runs and drives great, clearcoat peeling off.

Great vehicle, runs and drives great with a few repairs, trans rebuilt, and steering linkage replaced, Clearcoat is peeling off, and I have had to replace seats cushions. But I will keep and drive it to the end.

Starts every time!

Okay, gas mileage.....meh. But it's a truck. I bought my 99% rust free truck from a dealership in Chesapeake VA. I live in Philadelphia so I bought it with no test drive. I'll never do that again. Over paid. It was so clean in the pics, I just assumed it was perfect. 1200 in parts later I very happy with my 2000 Ram. Did I over pay... Yes. But I love it. I always wanted one. The movie Twister, and Walker Texas Ranger I'd watch just for the truck. But if your looking for a good reliable truck that won't break the bank, this is it.

Favorite truck.

I have always loved dodge rams. Early 2000s body styles are the most reliable and fun to drive. You should buy one.

Has been very reliable

One owner, in good condition. 5.9 liter 4X4 quad cab short box. 150,000 miles. The tires are nearly new, I wasn't intending to sell this truck. I have fixed many of the parts recently as I planned to keep it for many years. I just had the tranny completely serviced and it operates very well. I recently replaced the dash because the original cracked due to faulty material as is common for dodge pickups of this generation. While replacing the dash i replaced the heater core because it had a slight leak. I recently had the a/c completely replaced and it will freeze you out on a hot day. I replaced the door hinges. Replaced front wheel bearings recently and the brakes were also recently replaced. In last couple of years replaced all fluids... differential, transfer case, coolant, etc. A little over a year ago had the fuel injection system cleaned. This truck has been as reliable as they come and never abused. To be honest I will miss it! This truck has many more years left in it. I recently bought a new truck and I am ready to pass it on to the next owner. Come take it for a test drive. I am not in a rush to sell, I am open to offers but keep in mind I am not in a rush to sell.
