Rating: 4.58
Based on 21 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is a heavy-duty pickup truck built for serious work. Part of the third-generation Ram (2003-2009), it's known for its robust capabilities and Cummins diesel engine option. Body styles include regular, extended (Quad Cab), and crew cab, all with an 8-foot or 6.3-foot bed. Key trims are ST, SLT, and Laramie. New pricing ranged from approximately $25,000 to $45,000, depending on configuration. Its powerful engine options and impressive towing capacity are major draws for buyers needing a reliable work truck.
The Good

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 boasts powerful performance, especially with the Cummins diesel. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers dependable reliability and a rugged design that appeals to those needing a workhorse. Practical buyers appreciate its towing capacity and robust build, while emotional buyers are drawn to its bold styling and reputation for tackling tough jobs. The Laramie trim offers a degree of comfort.

The Bad

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is known to have potential issues with front-end suspension components, particularly ball joints and steering linkages. Rust can be a problem in certain climates. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmissions, especially when heavily loaded. Fuel injectors on the diesel engines can also be a point of concern. Always inspect for these potential problems before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Have?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. The most common issues involve the front-end suspension, particularly ball joints and tie rod ends. These components can wear out quickly, especially with heavy use or larger tires. Another area of concern is rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Frame rust can be a significant issue.

Automatic transmissions (especially the 48RE) have been known to have issues, particularly when subjected to heavy towing on a regular basis. Overheating can be a problem. The Cummins diesel engine is generally very reliable, but fuel injector problems can occur, leading to poor performance and increased emissions.

Recalls for the 2006 Ram 3500 have included issues with the fuel tank assembly and potential problems with the park pawl not engaging properly. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around proper maintenance. Neglecting regular servicing can exacerbate existing weaknesses and lead to more significant problems down the road.

How long will the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 last?

A well-maintained 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 can easily exceed 250,000 miles. With proper care, many owners report reaching 300,000 to 400,000 miles, particularly with the Cummins diesel engine. However, long-term durability heavily depends on maintenance. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing front-end suspension issues promptly are crucial.

Weaknesses over time often manifest as increased wear and tear on suspension components, rust in vulnerable areas, and potential transmission issues if not properly maintained. The diesel engine, while robust, requires consistent fuel filter and injector maintenance to prevent problems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500's tech and safety features are relatively basic by today's standards. Standard entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims like the Laramie offered upgraded sound systems, possibly with a multi-disc CD changer. Navigation systems were rare.

Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard, and some models may have had optional cruise control. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.

Safety features included standard front airbags. Side airbags were optional on some trims. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally acceptable for a truck of its size and era. However, it's important to note that safety standards have significantly improved since 2006.

Optional features varied by trim level and included things like power-adjustable pedals, heated seats (Laramie), and a sunroof. Overall, the 2006 Ram 3500 prioritized functionality and capability over advanced technology. Its safety features were standard for its time, but far less comprehensive than modern vehicles.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 ranged from approximately $25,000 for a basic ST model to $45,000+ for a fully loaded Laramie with the Cummins diesel. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and configuration. Expect to find them anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 or more.

Depreciation has been significant, but trucks, particularly those with diesel engines, hold their value relatively well. Factors affecting resale value include the engine (Cummins diesel commands a premium), overall condition (rust is a major detractor), mileage, and any modifications or upgrades. A well-maintained, low-mileage Cummins diesel 2006 Ram 3500 will retain the most value.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is generally not an economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on coverage and driving record. Fuel costs are significant, especially with the Cummins diesel or the Hemi V8. Maintenance costs can be reasonable with regular servicing, but repairs, especially for the transmission or front-end suspension, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs are higher than smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Budget accordingly for potential repairs and maintenance.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 competed primarily with the Ford F-350 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500 (and GMC Sierra 3500). In terms of performance, the Cummins diesel in the Ram was often praised for its torque and pulling power, sometimes considered superior to Ford's Power Stroke and Chevy's Duramax diesels of the time.

In terms of features, the Ram offered a decent range, but the Ford and Chevy often had more available options, especially in higher trim levels. Reliability is a mixed bag; all three brands have their share of issues. The Ram's front-end suspension is a known weak point. Price-wise, the Ram was generally competitive, often slightly less expensive than Ford, but similar to Chevy.

Alternatives to the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 include the 2006 Ford F-350 and 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 3500/GMC Sierra 3500. If reliability is a top concern, carefully research each truck's history and maintenance records before purchasing. Some buyers might prefer the Ford's ride quality or the Chevy's interior layout. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is ideal for individuals or businesses needing a powerful and capable heavy-duty truck for towing and hauling. It's particularly well-suited for those who value the robust Cummins diesel engine. It's generally worth buying *used*, provided it's been well-maintained and thoroughly inspected. Pay close attention to the front-end suspension, transmission, and rust. A higher trim like the Laramie offers more comfort, but a well-cared-for ST or SLT can be a great value. Avoid trucks with a history of heavy abuse or neglected maintenance. Finding one with detailed service records is a big plus.

Will pull most anything you need it to, while getting 20-24 mpg. Simple and solid, 5.9 is a 500k motor. My one regret......waiting 15 years to buy one..

Amazing truck - took us around this country twice

Used this pickup to tow our 5th wheel all over the United States. very solid an d dependable with great fuel economy. After 233,000 miles the motor was still strong with no issues. unfortunately the Dodge around it started falling apart. Little things here and there started failing. Because we fulltime RV we needed peace of mind that a bearing was not going to fail and leave us on the side of the road.... so we traded it in on a new 2018 3500.

Fun truck to drive, and very reliable.

We've owned the truck for about 6 years and have never had a problem with it. It's strong, reliable, and fun to drive. Not to mention comfortable. We've owned many Dodge's and have always loved them.

Quality and comfort

Do far this truck has plenty of power with is diesel engine. It's tuned and there last of the 5.9 Cummins without all that emissions bs. There cab is roomy and comfortable. The controls are right where they are supposed to be. The bed is shorter than I'm used to but plenty of room so far. It looks good and has plenty of power. Great truck.

Very powerful truck

Has performed everything I have ask of it. Towed huge loaded trailer from Alaska to Oklahoma and got 20 MPG. Dodge makes good trucks. I will buy another if this one ever wares out.

Rocksolid

Had since new, most reliable truck ever owned. Traveled with my family thousands of miles and the truck has never left us stranded. I love this truck.

Superb Towing Vehicle - Better Than New Models

The 2006 Dodge RAM 3500 with a 5.9 Cummins Turbo has more low end torque, tows better and gets much better MPG than any of the models made after this year. Highly recommended if you can find one. It will cost you half the price of a new one and outperform it with much lower depreciation.

Good powertrain, lots of small common issues

I like the way this vehicle drives and I like its capabilities, but I test drive several and found that they have several small common issues. One that I ran into was that you try to put it into park and open the door and the alarm goes off. This is because the shifter cable gets loose and the truck won't go into park. Another is that all the power windows work but only using the driver door controls. If you try any of the other window controls from any other door then they don't work. This is apparently a problem with the control switch module in the driver door. Carefully check every control on every door.

Great heavy duty truck if you buy the diesel

I drive a 3500 4wd dually with a cummins diesel. Ride without a load was firm but comfortable. Enjoyed it.
