What Problems Does the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 include issues with the front-end suspension, particularly ball joints and tie rod ends, which can wear out prematurely, especially under heavy use. The diesel engines, while robust, can experience injector failures and turbocharger problems if not properly maintained. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping and harsh shifting. Rust is a concern, especially in areas with road salt; pay close attention to the undercarriage and body panels.

Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential problems with the fuel system and airbags. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for specific recalls related to the VIN of any truck you are considering. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around maintaining the diesel engine's complex components and addressing wear and tear on heavy-duty suspension parts. The electronic throttle control (ETC) system has also been known to cause occasional issues. Early 2008 models might have the 5.9L Cummins, while later ones have the 6.7L, each with their own set of common issues.

How long will the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 can easily reach 200,000 to 300,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 15 years of service. Durability hinges on consistent maintenance, especially for the diesel engine, which requires regular oil changes, fuel filter replacements, and coolant flushes. Weaknesses over time typically involve suspension wear, rust, and potential transmission issues if fluid changes are neglected. Trucks used primarily for heavy towing or hauling will likely experience component wear more quickly. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing longevity.

Smooth ride and exceptional power. This truck has done everything I have asked of it. The 6 cylinder diesel matched with the G56 transmission is perfect for our pulling needs.

I always wanted a big truck , we live on a ranch and it comes in handy. It helps us move cattle and furniture and also anything that needs transporting between families.

The specific truck we went to see was sold the day before. Our salesman found exactly what we were looking for: Dodge 3500 4x4 diesel dually with fewer than 75,000 miles. We have had our fifth wheel hitch installed and will be pulling our 38' fifth wheel camper. The truck has tremendous power, doesn't labor at all going up a steep hill and rides like a dream. We couldn't be happier with it. Thanks Cars.com!!

2008 Ram 3500 Mega-Cab diesel 4x4. I like the ride height and clearance of the truck for the job site and towing my sled trailer through the snow. The engine and engine brake have been good. The cab comforts are good with a few exceptions. The paper Infinity speakers in the front doors are garbage and were replaced twice on warranty and I put in aftermarket Infinity speakers for a great improvement in sound and reliability. Also the drivers seat stitching and padding has completely come apart by 70000 kms (45000 miles). Now the good part, the front end. At 30000 kms the upper and lower ball joints on both sides were shot the drag link ends were shot and the drag link and track bar upgraded to a 5500 drag link and track bar under warranty(so I was informed by the dealer). At about 40000 kms the pitman arm broke while in motion. this happened on three other Ram 3500 I know about under 60000 kms. Scary! At around 50000 kms the rear diff carrier was replaced under warranty. Now at 98000 kms again, the ball joints are all shot, the steering box is worn out (dealer inspection verifies) no warranty and the front drive shaft u-joints are gone, under warranty. All in all the drive train and front end has sorely disappointed me and at 100000 kms (only 60000 miles) I will be shelling out $3000.00 to fix problems that shouldnt occur this soon. the truck spends 90% of its miles on pavement and the rest on good gravel or around the construction site

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Dodge Ram 3500's technology is fairly basic compared to modern trucks. Standard entertainment features typically include an AM/FM radio and a CD player. Higher trims like the Laramie offered upgraded audio systems, including satellite radio capability and sometimes a navigation system (though outdated by today's standards). Driver-assistance features are minimal, generally limited to antilock brakes (ABS).

Safety features include standard front airbags and available side curtain airbags. Electronic stability control was an optional feature. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA vary depending on the cab configuration. The Quad Cab version generally received good scores for frontal impact protection. Information from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) is limited for this specific model year.

Optional features could include power-adjustable pedals, heated seats, and a sunroof. Keep in mind that technology was less emphasized in heavy-duty trucks of this era, so features are fairly rudimentary by today's standards. The focus was primarily on capability and durability rather than advanced tech.

2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 ranged from approximately $30,000 for a basic ST model to $45,000+ for a fully loaded Laramie with the diesel engine. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them in the range of $15,000 to $30,000, but exceptionally well-maintained or low-mileage examples could command a premium. Depreciation has been significant, but diesel models tend to hold their value better due to their durability and towing capabilities. Factors affecting resale value include engine type (diesel commanding more), 4WD, overall condition, and documented maintenance history.

2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 is generally not considered economical. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on your driving record and location. Fuel costs are significant, especially with the V8 or diesel engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly for diesel models due to their more complex systems. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs. Long-term ownership costs are heavily influenced by how well the truck was maintained and how it is used. Expect higher expenses compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Insurance

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 competes with the Ford F-350 and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 3500. In terms of performance, the Ram's Cummins diesel is generally well-regarded, offering strong torque. Features are comparable across the class, though the Ram's interior might feel slightly less refined than some competitors, especially in lower trims. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Ford Power Stroke diesel has its own set of issues, while the Duramax in the GM trucks is generally considered reliable, but all require diligent maintenance.

Price-wise, the Ram is often competitively priced in the used market. A potential better alternative, depending on your needs and budget, might be a newer Ford F-350 or Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra 3500 if reliability and updated features are priorities. If towing capacity and diesel performance are paramount and you find a well-maintained Ram at a good price, it can be a solid choice. The GM trucks often offer a slightly smoother ride and a more refined interior, while the Ford often provides comparable towing capabilities with varying reliability histories.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 is ideal for those needing a powerful and capable heavy-duty truck for towing and hauling, particularly if a diesel engine is desired. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history, especially a diesel model. Consider a higher trim like the SLT or Laramie for added comfort. Thoroughly inspect the suspension, transmission, and undercarriage for rust. If reliability and modern features are a higher priority, exploring newer trucks from Ford or GM might be worthwhile, but the 2008 Ram 3500 offers a compelling blend of capability and value in the used market for those who prioritize raw power.

This truck is a BEAST

The crew cab is smaller than today's crew cabs, but the power is there to get the job done. The interior and exterior styling is ok. Everything is under the hood. The 6.7L Cummins is a beast and tows like a dream.

Good looking work horse!

Keeping in mind this is a 1 ton rated truck wich means it will be a little rougher ride due to heavy duty suspension. This truck has all the power I need sporting the 6cyl 6.7 Cummins, also the cab is very spacious as a crew cab.

DISAPPOINTING OVER LONG TERM

We've been using Dodge Cummins pick ups for service vehicles for the past 25 years. Of the 12 we've had dating back to 1993, this has been one of the most expensive to operate primarily due to the cost or repairs related to the emissions equipment; EGR and DPF. Any other problems with this vehicle we can attribute to employees not paying attention to warnings. At 425k miles, with a new transmission, it is still road worthy and as long as the maintenance is performed, I'm sure it will go another 400K.
