The Good
The 2016 Crosstrek's advantages include standard all-wheel drive for secure handling, a reputation for Subaru reliability, and decent fuel efficiency. It offers a comfortable ride and a practical hatchback design. Emotionally, it provides a sense of adventure; practically, it's a safe and dependable daily driver with good resale value.
The Bad
The 2016 Crosstrek's primary weaknesses include its somewhat underpowered engine, which can feel sluggish during acceleration and highway merging. The infotainment system can also feel dated compared to rivals. Some owners have reported oil consumption issues, so regular oil checks are crucial. Its handling, while competent, is not sporty.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Have?
Long-term reliability concerns center around the CVT transmission, which some owners have experienced issues with at higher mileages. Regular maintenance and fluid changes are crucial to prolonging the CVT's life. The hybrid model may have battery life degradation over time, impacting fuel economy. Overall, while Subaru has a reputation for reliability, the 2016 Crosstrek isn't without its potential issues, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection is recommended. Check for any oil leaks and confirm the CVT is functioning smoothly during a test drive.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features include standard all-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags.
Crash-test ratings are generally good. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the 2016 Crosstrek a "Top Safety Pick" rating. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The infotainment system, while functional, lacks the sophistication of newer systems. Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance technology (adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking) was not available on the 2016 Crosstrek but became available in later model years. Standard safety is a strong point, but tech features are basic.

How Does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of reliability, the Subaru generally scores well, similar to Honda and Mazda. Price-wise, the Crosstrek is competitive. A similar or better alternative, depending on needs, would be the Mazda CX-5 (slightly larger but more powerful and refined) or a newer Subaru Impreza with all-wheel drive (for better fuel economy and similar practicality). If off-road capability isn't a priority, the Honda HR-V is a strong contender for its interior space. However, for all-weather capability at a reasonable price, the Crosstrek remains a solid choice.

Best vehicle I ever ownedI own several American cars in the past and I'll never buy another American car again after buying this Subaru. I feel a lot safer and a lot more comfortable in the Subaru Crosstrek than I ever felt in any American car built that I ever drove

From a 3 row SUV to hatchbackIβm 6 foot 3 and always felt that I need a big car to fit me and my family. This car shocked me though! I fit wonderfully in the driver seat and my teenage son fits comfortably in the back as well. I hope this little Subaru lives up to its reputation.

Great! Car!! Super happy with it all around! This vehicle meets all of our needs and then some. Itβs gas efficient at 34 miles to the gallon, plenty of leg room, fully loaded with headed seats and great sound system. Love the little details like alloy wheels and sunroof included. We do a lot of outdoor activity - so the all wheel drive and good space capability is a plus. Love Subaruβs .... drives super smooth and is very comfortable for long trips ! Wouldnβt want any other vehicle. Great visibility and feels safe and secure while on the road !

Another great SubaruThis is my second Subaru. I had a 2005 Forester for 9 years before purchasing this in October of 2020. So far, it is great. The technology is easy to use and helpful. It is comfortable, has great storage, and runs like a champ.

Great all around carWe bought this car for our son in college. He has driven it from Texas to Washington and it performed perfectly. Great value and good gas mileage. A solid car!

Comfy, Great Milage, AWD, All around awesome crossAmazing gas mileage. Comfy seats. Plenty of leg room. I'm 6'2" and a solid big dude. Definitely recommend the Crosstrek for anyone who wants reliable, AWD, safe and small family ( one 105 lb Italian Mastiff ) friendly rig. Depending on how much hwy I drive. I'm averaging 29.4 mpg and I'm not even trying to keep my foot off the skinny pedal or use the paddles in Manual mode.

Glad I Bought itJust a fun car to drive. Fantastic in snow, especially fun in the mountains, very comfortable, simple to operate. The only suggestion would be to beef up the engine, although there is no problem cruising past anyone once you tax the engine a bit. Great gas mileage.
