2019 Subaru Crosstrek Review: Reliable Compact SUV With Low Maintenance Costs

Rating: 4.65
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is a compact crossover SUV that's known for its standard all-wheel drive and off-road capabilities. Introduced in 2012 (as a 2013 model), it's based on the Impreza hatchback. Key trims include the base, Premium, Limited, and Hybrid. Pricing ranged roughly from $23,000 to $30,000 when new. Its rugged appeal and practicality, combined with Subaru's reputation for reliability, make it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2019 Crosstrek offers standard all-wheel drive, a practical advantage for adverse weather and light off-roading. It boasts good reliability and fuel efficiency. While not a performance vehicle, it provides a comfortable ride. The rugged design appeals to those seeking adventure, while its overall value and Subaru's reputation offer peace of mind for practical buyers.

The Bad

The 2019 Crosstrek's main weakness is its relatively underpowered engine. Acceleration can feel sluggish, especially when fully loaded or going uphill. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. Watch out for excessive oil consumption, a common concern in some Subaru models of this era. The rear seats might feel cramped for taller passengers.

What Problems Does the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek include infotainment system glitches, such as freezing or slow response times. Some owners have also reported issues with the EyeSight system malfunctioning. Excessive oil consumption has been a long-term concern across various Subaru models, including the Crosstrek, though it's not universally reported for the 2019 model year specifically. It's advisable to monitor oil levels regularly.

Recalls for the 2019 Crosstrek have included concerns regarding the PCV valve which could potentially lead to engine failure. Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information and ensure any open recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns mostly revolve around the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages, particularly concerning the CVT transmission. While generally reliable, preventative maintenance on the CVT is crucial to prolong its lifespan. Also, inspect for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Some owners have reported premature wear of brake components.

How long will the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Subarus, in general, are known for their longevity. Long-term durability depends heavily on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Potential weaknesses over time include the aforementioned CVT transmission issues if not properly maintained, potential head gasket leaks (though less common in newer models), and the gradual degradation of suspension components. Regular oil changes and timely servicing are key to maximizing its lifespan. Rust prevention is also important, especially in colder climates.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen. The base model includes a rearview camera. Available entertainment features include an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system.

Driver-assistance features include Subaru's EyeSight system (available on higher trims), which incorporates adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is also available.

Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and a suite of airbags.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek received excellent crash-test ratings. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" rating when equipped with EyeSight. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. Optional features included a power sunroof, keyless access with push-button start, and leather upholstery.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek ranged from around $23,000 for the base model to approximately $30,000 for the Limited trim. Current used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Crosstrek holds its value relatively well due to Subaru's reputation for reliability and the desirability of standard all-wheel drive. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable features like EyeSight or a sunroof. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek generally has reasonable ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance costs are average, but addressing potential issues like oil consumption or CVT maintenance can impact long-term expenses. Repairs can be slightly more expensive than some competitors due to Subaru's unique Boxer engine design. Overall, it is considered relatively economical to own compared to other SUVs, but not the absolute cheapest in its class.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Jeep Renegade, and Nissan Kicks. The Crosstrek's main advantage is its standard all-wheel drive, which rivals like the HR-V offer as an option. In terms of performance, the Crosstrek lags behind the Mazda CX-3, which offers a more engaging driving experience. The Jeep Renegade provides better off-road capability, though sacrifices fuel economy.

Reliability is generally a strong point for the Crosstrek, comparable to the Honda HR-V. The Nissan Kicks is more budget-friendly but lacks AWD. The Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V offer more refined interiors than the Crosstrek.

Alternatives to consider include the Mazda CX-5 (larger, more powerful), the Honda CR-V (more spacious), or the Subaru Forester (slightly larger, more practical). If AWD is not a necessity, the Kia Seltos offers similar features at a potentially lower price. If performance is a priority, a used Mazda CX-5 or even a Volkswagen GTI hatchback (for a similar price point) might be a better choice.

Ranks #372 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is ideal for individuals or small families who need a reliable and capable compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive for commuting or light off-road adventures. It's a good choice for those living in areas with inclement weather. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2019 Crosstrek represents a good value proposition, especially if you can find one with low mileage and a clean maintenance history. The Premium or Limited trims are recommended for added features and comfort. Consider the engine's power limitations if frequent highway driving or carrying heavy loads is required. Always check for outstanding recalls.

The car I never knew I needed.

I inherited the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited from my wife. She ended up getting another Forester. Needless to say, I never picked this car for myself. However, the Subaru Brand and this Crosstrek has won me over. The AWD system works perfectly in the snowy Northern New York climate. With dedicated winter tires, I have complete confidence in my ability to keep it through the worst Lake Effect snow. The ground clearance allows me to drive easily on unloved roads with ease. I don't use X-Mode often, but it does help for going uphill on snowy roads or times when the snow is pretty deep. I've never been stuck or stranded with this car. The power train is adequate enough for highway and secondary roads. There are times when merging or attempting to pass, where I wished it had more power. (Drove a loaner 2020 Limited with the 2.5L, that is the perfect power train for the Crosstrek) I have never had any issues with the CVT transmission, but it does take some getting used to. The interior is fine. The gauges, screens and buttons are laid out well. I can find everything with ease and non of the buttons are in odd places. The factory speakers are lacking, but this model doesn't not have the upgraded stero option. Andriod auto works well. Seats are comfortable but do not have much lumbar support. Bolstered well and the headrest has a big range of adjustments. At 70k, I noticed the first crack in the synthetic leather bolster. The Limited trim is equipped with LED headlamps and they are truly fantastic. I rarely find myself using the hi-beams. The turning headlamps are very helpful with visibility when turning. Excellent all around. Eyesight and adaptive cruise works well and I have never had any issues. Only minor hiccups when snow, rain, fog or very bright oncoming light will trip Eyesight off. After a minute, it turns itself on. Overall this car is everything I needed and I never knew it. Reliable, fuell efficient, capable in snow and light off-road situations. It had enough utility space for anything I have ever hauled. Truly impressed with this little car. I plan on keeping it for the long haul. You won't be disappointed.

Comfortable, smooth and practical.

Bought it new and now 3+ years in has had no problems. Seems quite solid and reliable. A very comfortable, quiet, smooth ride compared to other cars I've owned. I bought it primarily for the utility and active safety features and mostly have not been disappointed. If you like very quick acceleration, however, this is not the car for you. It accelerates fine for my driving style. A few minor gripes about a car I still like: There's no interior light in the hatch area, which makes it difficult to see in the dark. It would be helpful to have door locks that automatically lock when the vehicle is shifted into R or D. Otherwise, you have to lock/unlock the doors using the small switch on the armrest. The driver safety features have already prevented a couple of potential accidents, but are overly sensitive at times. Once I was not able to back out of my driveway because there was a puddle at the bottom with the sun shining on it. The sensors thought it was an object and hit the brakes. It happened a second time until I backed out very slowly over the puddle. Otherwise, the car meets my needs for a small, competent, safe SUV.

2 MAJOR recalls in4.5 months of ownership

Bought my 2019 crosstalk used from a dealership certified used. Was priced 1500 dollars below blue book interest was 0.8% from. So far so good, right? In the 4.5 months of ownership 2 major recalls. One for rear stabilizer, one other engine call that could cause a short...start a fire, cause a stall while driving so lose of control! I did the research prior to purchase. Edmond, car and driver, mechanic spec sheets.... supposed to be safe and reliable HA! Both recalls have been fixed but has Subaru bothered to notify ME, the owner? Not yet. Things better get better...but beware of this car. I have now entered the Vin into online site so I will be notified of any further mechanical issues bypassing the unreliable SLOW Subaru notifications.
