Practical buyers appreciate its reliability, fuel efficiency, and strong resale value. The comfortable interior and distinctive Subaru design enhance its overall appeal, making it a well-rounded choice.
The Bad

What Problems Does the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Have?
Recalls for the 2020 Crosstrek are relatively infrequent, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any current or past recalls related to specific VINs. Long-term reliability concerns are minimal, as Subarus are generally known for their durability. However, like any vehicle, regular maintenance is key to preventing issues. Specific model years prior to 2020 sometimes had concerns about excessive oil consumption, but this was largely addressed in later models, including the 2020 version. Potential buyers should review vehicle history reports and consider a pre-purchase inspection to identify any existing or potential problems.

How Does the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Alternatives to the Crosstrek include the Mazda CX-30, which offers a more refined driving experience and a nicer interior, although it's slightly more expensive. The Honda HR-V is a good choice for those prioritizing cargo space and practicality. The Jeep Renegade provides more off-road capability in Trailhawk trim. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities, but the Crosstrek's blend of AWD, reliability, and value makes it a strong contender in its class.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Premium Crosstrek I purchased brand new has hadThe 2020 Premium Crosstrek I purchased brand new has had too many problems. I’m retired and don’t drive much. First, mere months after purchase, I had to replace the battery 2-3 times, really? The HQ said I shouldn’t let it sit more than a week or 2. I was supposed to start and idle it 15 minutes every week. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? After having had the “final†battery put in it’s been fine without having to idle it. What a line of xxxx. Now I have just under 16k mi on it in February 2025. The rubber gasket†that runs under the windshield wipers came loose. Just prior to that I was having problems with the struts for the cargo door. Since I didn’t fix it in time I had to pay $100 for my warranty deductible. It was recently time to replace the battery. The guy said it would cost $700, yes $700 F’ing bucks for a battery!!! They gave me some xx like “oh, they have to recalibrate “â€things after it’s changed. I’m a single female. I was fuming and RAISED xxxx so the packed waiting room and showroom could hear me. That’s a LOAD OF CRAP. The guy got the manager who I also yelled at but he did relent to the point of kindly letting me have it for free. I’m still pissed, though. NOW my windshield leaks at the top from where it joins the body. Of course this is NOT covered by my warranty so I have to use my insurance. Well, in VT it’s not a $100 deductible, it’s $500 under comprehensive. That’s the cost of the windshield cash! As small things have cropped up on such a pristine car, what’s next? The transmission? This is a rolling xxx. I’m going for a RAV 4 next. F this garbage on wheels.

Great Vehicle! Very Happy with Purchase! This is a great vehicle! I find it comfortable, well designed, and loaded with safety features that would cost far more in other makes of vehicle. The mileage is great, and I enjoy the stereo upgrade that came with my vehicle. The winter hasn’t proven to be a challenge-this vehicle does great even on unplowed roads. Couldn’t be happier with my Crosstrek, and I came to Subaru after owning three Ford Escapes that I really liked. I didn’t like the new body design of the Ford Escape, and decided to check out the Subaru. Glad I did!!

A solid, small SUVWe've owned several Outbacks but wanted something smaller - the Crosstrek was a perfect fit. We love the solid feel and the zippier (compared to our old Outback) pickup. Inside the car feels roomy, but the trunk is a little small. So far, loving it!

Love my new Subaru! This car meets all our needs, has plenty of leg room, is a joy to drive. We also like all the little details we keep finding like cup holders on the doors which we have never had. I have owned several cars, and this one Is by far is my favorite in all categories!

Safety and comfortI have driven this car for a week, and I am impressed. Safety is important to me, and this car has a lot of advanced safety features. It doesn't have the power of my previous vehicle (VW GTI Turbo), but this car has more storage room and many more safety features.
