What Problems Does the 2012 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Volvo S60 often revolve around the electronic systems. Issues with the Sensus infotainment system, including glitches and software malfunctions, are not uncommon. Some owners have reported problems with the climate control system, such as inconsistent temperature regulation or failure of the system entirely. The Haldex all-wheel-drive system, present in T6 models, can sometimes experience failures due to pump or control module issues.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any specific recalls related to your VIN. Some potential recall areas could include fuel pump issues or problems with the electrical system.

Long-term reliability can be affected by diligent maintenance. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, particularly oil changes and fluid checks, can lead to premature wear on engine and transmission components. The turbocharged engines require synthetic oil and adherence to Volvo's recommended service intervals. Suspension components and brake systems should also be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure safe and reliable operation over the long term. Regular software updates for the car's computer systems are also advisable to prevent glitches and ensure optimal performance.

How long will the 2012 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Volvo S60 can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over a decade of service. Consistent oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles with synthetic oil), timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Weaknesses over time often involve the electronic systems, AWD system (if equipped), and potential turbocharger issues if maintenance is neglected. The key to long-term durability is proactive maintenance following Volvo's recommended schedule.

This car is horrendous reliability wise, seriously run as fast as you can if you don’t have the money for thousands in repairs immediately when you buy it. It has a bad transmission and really bad misfiring problems. If you want comfort without breaking down get a Lexus. I bought it at 101k miles and immediately had 4 new problems within 2 weeks, all of which are expensive of course. Don’t even think about it if you wanna get one. I’d hate for anyone to go through the agony of attempting to daily this.

I OWN A VOLVO S60 WHICH IS THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. IT HAS A POOR MILEAGE,POOR TYRES, POOR PERFORMANCE OVERALL. I HAVE SPENT RS.200000.00($4000) ON THIS BOGUS CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO EVEN MY ENEMY.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Volvo S60 comes equipped with a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes Volvo's Sensus infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a CD player with MP3 playback. Entertainment features were relatively basic compared to modern systems.

Driver-assistance features included standard stability control, anti-lock brakes, and numerous airbags. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and park assist. These features were cutting-edge for their time and significantly enhance safety and convenience.

Safety is a Volvo hallmark, and the 2012 S60 is no exception. It features Volvo's City Safety system, designed to mitigate or prevent low-speed collisions. This system automatically applies the brakes if it detects an imminent collision at speeds below 19 mph.

Crash-test ratings for the 2012 Volvo S60 are generally excellent. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the S60 a Top Safety Pick. 2012 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $31,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to the age of the vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident records, and overall condition. Models with lower mileage and comprehensive service records command higher prices. R-Design models tend to hold their value slightly better due to their sportier appeal.

2012 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2012 Volvo S60 are moderate, generally similar to other luxury sedans in its class. Fuel costs depend on driving habits, but the turbocharged engines can be thirsty. Maintenance and repair can be more expensive than for non-luxury brands, especially for specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs are therefore moderate to high. While not the most economical choice, the S60 offers a balance of luxury and performance that may justify the higher costs for some buyers.

2012 Volvo S60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a S80 with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Volvo S60 Compare to Other S80?

The 2012 Volvo S60 competed with the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Acura TL. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series offered sharper handling, while the S60 prioritized comfort. The Audi A4 provided a similar blend of luxury and performance. Regarding features, the S60 was competitive, particularly in safety technology. However, its infotainment system lagged behind some rivals.

Reliability is a mixed bag. While Volvos have a reputation for safety and longevity, some owners report electronic issues. The Lexus IS, known for its exceptional reliability, might be a better choice for buyers prioritizing dependability.

In terms of price, the S60 was generally competitive, especially on the used market. The Acura TL offered a similar value proposition with a focus on reliability. A similar alternative would be a Lexus IS, offering a good blend of reliability and luxury. The BMW 3 Series is better for driving enthusiasts, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers a more prestigious badge. If reliability is paramount, the Lexus IS is the strongest contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Volvo S60 a Good S80?

The 2012 Volvo S60 is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable, safe, and stylish luxury sedan. It's a good choice for those who value Volvo's emphasis on safety and Scandinavian design. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price. A well-maintained used model can be a good value, but a pre-purchase inspection is essential. The T6 R-Design offers the best performance, but the T5 provides a more economical option. If you prioritize reliability above all else, consider a Lexus IS instead. However, if you value Volvo's unique blend of features and styling, the 2012 S60 is worth considering.

Please do not buy!

I bought my s60 in 2021 with 89,000 miles. Immediately after purchase it was saying no oil. I took it to dealership, they changed the oil and sent me on my way. The oil was leaking out, one quart a week. They kept saying there was no leak, they didn’t know what was happening. A month in a half later the car stalls out on the highway. I get it towed to the shop and they tell me I need a whole new engine. THANK GOD I purchased an extended warranty but still had to fight with them to replace it. It took them 2 months to fix it. I pick it up from the shop, get on the highway and my coolant level light comes on and says I need to add coolant. After that my car leaked coolant EVERYDAY. My dad helped me get it fixed. New radiator cap. One month later my window went off track and exploded. My brake pedal fell off. The glove box and center compartment broke and this all happened in the span of 6 months. The worst car I’ve ever owned. Please please do not buy this car. One mechanic I spoke with said that the 2012 s60’s were a fluke year. Volvo changed their make up after that year. Also I had 4 recalls while I had it as well. Shew.

A Fun Car To Own!

My Volvo S-60, T-5 has been one of, if not the best car I've owned. It is comfortable and has outstanding handling and acceleration with great highway gas mileage. In-town mileage leaves something to be desired but is nothing I can't live with.

This is a winner from volvo

This is a fast car with great all wheel drive system. So comfortable you can do 8 hrs easily. Sound system is great and steering wheel controls make cruising a joy. Power moon roof lets the perfect amount of air and light in for a wind in your hair feel. This car is not slow. Its straight 6 with turbo power has this a sleeper car for sure. If you opt for the polestar software upgrade for 1500.00. Youll make that a lively 350hp and 350lb ft. That mated with an impressive all wheel drive system its get up, pull your dress up and does a full haul to 60 in low 5 sec range. This is a great daily driver. Ive had my 2012 volvo s60 t6 in black for 3 yrs and just fall in love more and more with it everytime i drive it. I just did a rolling 40mph with a newer Camaro rs with the v6 which is 330 or so hp and was over 1 car length in front! She rolls out!!
