The S60 boasts good fuel efficiency for its class and a reputation for safety, making it a sensible and desirable choice. While not the sportiest, its balanced nature is a key advantage.

What Problems Does the 2021 Volvo S60 Have?

While the 2021 Volvo S60 generally enjoys decent reliability, some frequently reported problems involve the infotainment system. Owners have noted occasional glitches, slow response times, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some electrical issues, such as sensor malfunctions and problems with the adaptive cruise control system, have also been reported, though less frequently. There have been some recalls related to fuel pump issues, potentially leading to engine stalling, and also some concerning airbag deployment. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the complex hybrid systems in the T8 Recharge models, including the battery pack. Regular maintenance and adherence to Volvo's recommended service schedule are crucial to mitigating these potential issues. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended, especially for T8 models, to assess the condition of the hybrid components and check for any outstanding recalls or service bulletins. Checking the vehicle history report for previous repairs and maintenance can also provide valuable insights. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant and costly repairs down the line.

How long will the 2021 Volvo S60 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2021 Volvo S60 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Volvo's reputation for safety and build quality contributes to its longevity. However, the long-term durability of the S60, especially T6 and T8 models, heavily depends on proper care. Weaknesses over time may include wear and tear on suspension components, potential issues with the turbocharger or supercharger (if equipped), and the aforementioned concerns about the hybrid system's battery life in the T8 Recharge. Regular fluid changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and prompt attention to any warning lights are essential to maximize the car's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Volvo S60 boasts a comprehensive suite of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, which integrates navigation, audio controls, climate settings, and vehicle functions. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera. Optional features include Pilot Assist (Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system), adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. For entertainment, a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system is available, delivering exceptional audio quality. Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the S60's design and features. It consistently receives high crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). These ratings reflect the car's robust structure and advanced safety technologies. The S60 also includes run-off road mitigation, which can tighten seatbelts and apply the brakes if the car detects it is about to leave the road unintentionally. Overall, the 2021 S60 offers a well-rounded package of technology and safety features designed to enhance the driving experience and protect occupants.

2021 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $40,000 to $55,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $28,000 to $40,000, reflecting depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and vehicle history. The T8 Recharge models might hold their value slightly better due to the plug-in hybrid technology, but battery health is a key concern. Cars with a clean title, complete service records, and low mileage command higher prices. The overall market demand for used luxury sedans also plays a role in depreciation.

2021 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2021 Volvo S60 are typically moderate for a luxury sedan, but can vary based on driving record and location. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice, with the T8 Recharge offering the potential for significant savings if driven primarily on electric power. Maintenance costs are average for the segment, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for the T6 and T8 engines. Long-term ownership costs are generally higher than non-luxury vehicles, making it neither the most economical nor the most costly in its class.

2021 Volvo S60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Volvo S60 competes with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Acura TLX. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series generally offers a more engaging driving experience, while the S60 prioritizes comfort. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class boasts a more luxurious interior, while the Audi A4 provides a refined and technologically advanced experience. The Acura TLX offers a strong value proposition with competitive features and reliability. While the S60's reliability is generally good, the Acura TLX is known for its superior long-term reliability. Feature-wise, the S60 is competitive, with a strong emphasis on safety. Price-wise, it's often positioned slightly below the BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Alternatives to consider include the Acura TLX for reliability and value, or the BMW 3 Series for a sportier driving experience. The Genesis G70 also provides excellent value and a compelling driving experience. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences. If safety and Scandinavian design are paramount, the S60 is a strong contender. If performance is the key consideration, the BMW might be a better fit. If reliability is the primary concern, the Acura could be the best choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Volvo S60 a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Volvo S60 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, comfort, and elegant Scandinavian design over outright sportiness. It's a good choice for families or individuals seeking a well-equipped luxury sedan with a focus on occupant protection. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A used S60, especially a well-maintained T5 or T6 model, can represent good value. The T8 Recharge offers fuel efficiency benefits, but its long-term reliability should be carefully considered. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial, particularly for the T8 models. Consider R-Design for a sportier look or Inscription for added luxury. Overall, it's a worthwhile purchase if you appreciate Volvo's distinct brand values and find a well-maintained example at a competitive price.

Great overlooked value

Good performance, smooth flowing lines and a comfortable yet great handling car. The T6 with AWD really brings this design to life. Would recommend looking at these before buying another marque.

A pleasure to drive and EXTREMELY comfortable

This is my 3rd S60 and the 21 T5 R-Design is the best of them all. It is beautiful to look at; fun to drive; and is absolutely the most comfortable seats and car I've ever driven.

First time owning a volvo

Pleasantly surprised. Very beautiful inside and out. Only two things that I’m not feeling, the key is huge (there is a small one but its do small that I can’t put it in my jey chain and does not have any function other that locking or unlocking when your’re close) and the other thing I don’t like is that it doesn’t have AM radio 🥺
