The 2006 Volvo S60 is a mid-size sedan known for its safety and understated Scandinavian design. Part of the S60's first generation (2000-2009), the 2006 model offered a blend of comfort and performance. Key trims included the 2.5T, T5, and R, each offering increasing levels of power and features. New pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000. Its reputation for safety and longevity contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2006 Volvo S60 provides a comfortable and safe driving experience. Its reliable engine options offer decent performance, while the classic Volvo design exudes understated elegance, appealing to emotional buyers. Practical advantages include its solid reputation for safety, reasonable fuel efficiency, and good value on the used market, making it a sensible choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2006 Volvo S60 include potential electronic issues, especially with the climate control system. What Problems Does the 2006 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Volvo S60 often revolve around electronic systems. Issues with the electronic throttle module (ETM) can cause erratic engine behavior. The climate control system is also known for problems, including failing blend door actuators and compressor issues. Suspension components, such as the front struts, control arms, and sway bar links, are prone to wear, especially on higher mileage vehicles. The T5 and R models, due to their higher performance and more complex systems, can be more expensive to maintain, with potential issues related to the turbocharger and all-wheel-drive system (R).

Recalls for the 2006 S60 have included issues related to fuel pump relays and potential problems with the supplemental restraint system (SRS). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with Volvo or the NHTSA to determine if all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often center on the lifespan of the automatic transmission, particularly if regular maintenance (fluid changes) has been neglected. Oil leaks, especially around the valve cover and rear main seal, are also common as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly, is crucial to maximizing the S60's lifespan. Some owners have reported issues with the ABS module. The earlier models within the 2000-2004 range tended to have more ETM problems than the later years, but it's still a potential issue to consider.

How long will the 2006 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Volvo S60 can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15+ years of service. Many owners report reaching 250,000 miles or more with consistent maintenance. However, neglecting scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes and timing belt replacements, will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Weaknesses over time include potential failures of electronic components, wear and tear on suspension parts, and oil leaks. The key to longevity is proactive maintenance and addressing issues promptly.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Volvo S60 offered a respectable suite of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and power windows/locks. Higher trims added features like a premium sound system with a subwoofer and available sunroof.

Driver-assistance features were less prevalent than in modern cars, but the S60 did offer cruise control as standard. Some models had optional features like rear parking sensors.

Safety was a major focus for Volvo. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), front and side airbags, and whiplash protection system (WHIPS) in the front seats. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) was also available.

Optional features included a navigation system (which now looks quite dated), heated seats, and leather upholstery.

Crash-test ratings were generally excellent. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the S60 five stars for frontal and side-impact protection for both driver and passenger. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the S60 a "Good" rating in its frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. These strong safety ratings contribute to the S60's reputation as a safe and reliable vehicle.

2006 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The S60 has depreciated significantly due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level. The R model, due to its performance and rarity, may command a slightly higher price than other trims. Examples with extensive service records and low mileage will also fetch a premium.

2006 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Volvo S60 are generally moderate, though the R model may be slightly higher. Fuel costs are average for its class. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than some competitors, especially if specialized repairs are needed. Parts can be more expensive than domestic brands. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits; neglecting repairs will lead to higher expenses. Overall, it's not the most economical car to own, but responsible maintenance can mitigate costs.

2006 Volvo S60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2006 Volvo S60 competed with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Acura TSX, and Lexus IS. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series generally offered a more engaging driving experience, while the S60 R provided a competitive edge over other trims with its high-performance engine and all-wheel drive. Feature-wise, the S60 was competitive, but some rivals offered more advanced technology options. The Acura TSX and Lexus IS were often considered more reliable than the S60, though Volvo's reputation for safety was a strong selling point.

Price-wise, the S60 was often positioned competitively. On the used market, it represents a good value. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura TSX or Lexus IS might be better alternatives. If performance is key, a well-maintained BMW 3 Series could be a good choice. However, the S60 offers a unique blend of safety, comfort, and understated style that appeals to a specific buyer.

Similar alternatives would be the Saab 9-3 (if you appreciate Scandinavian design) or potentially a higher trim Mazda 6 for a sportier experience with potentially better reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2006 Volvo S60 is ideal for someone seeking a comfortable, safe, and understated mid-size sedan. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you can find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history. The 2.5T trim offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the R model is a compelling option for performance enthusiasts willing to accept higher maintenance costs. Avoid examples with neglected maintenance or signs of significant rust. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. It is a good purchase for those who prioritize safety and are willing to invest in maintaining a slightly older European car.

great car

I bought the 2006 S60 in 2015 for $4200 with 96000 miles on it. I have had it now for close to 7 years. I have put 36000 miles on it. It still looks close to new on the inside and outside. Interior is very comfortable with top class leather seats. I have had to do no major repairs. Just changed the oil every 5000 miles. Good performance too. I got a very comfortable and pretty high quality sedan for a low price and got a lot of miles out of it. I think it will run another ten years, no problem.

S60 is my 2nd Volvo...here's the truth

My 940 was a better car, but I enjoy driving my S60 more. I weigh the cost of ownership w/ buying a new car, and my S60 wins hands down. The tranny main valve body is running me $2,400. The dealer wanted $4,800 for a rebuilt. Yeah, right! 5 more years worth of serv. Volvo is quality, but parts are expensive. We depreciate them down to $0, and get our $ out of them. "Wear a new face, and drive an old car." (Joan Rivers) That's my plan for 2021!

Hands down, best vehicle ever.

I've purchased my 06 S60 2.5T in 2015 with a bit over 130k miles. It currently running strong at 210k miles. I purchased the car for under 5k and put less than 5k in repairs and maintenance in the five years I've owned the car. The S60 is comfortable, dependable, and surprisingly fast. The handling is tight and responsive. The Tiptronic shifter transforms it into a racecar, giving the driver precise control and rapid up or downshifting. The exterior styling is plain, making the S60 virtually invisible - nobody will bat an eye. Taken together, this is the best car I've ever owned.

Scandinavian cars are the most reliable ones

The car is great. Perfect to drive, comfortable, safe and reliable. I drove my family more than a couple of years, had no real problems with it. Just the usual stuff with any car but no leakage and no problems with the motor.

Great First Car

This was not an easy choice but we bought this car for everyday use for a teenager. So far so good. The car looks and feels like a luxury automobile. The interior is leather and the exterior is just perfect.

Second S60, still rock solid

Mine has 47,000 miles after 12 years of ownership. Looks like it just drove off the showroom floor since the composite lower body panels and great paint job resist dings, chips. Replaced the timing belt/tensioner, battery and tires just due to age. Use only synthetic oil. Have had the routine checkups done by certified mechanic. Vehicle handles well, has excellent power and stability, feels solid and safe and styling is still fresh looking. Have never regretted driving Volvos.
