What Problems Does the 2004 Volvo S60 Have?

The 2004 Volvo S60, while generally reliable for its age, has some frequently reported problems. Electrical issues are common, often involving the climate control system (specifically the Electronic Climate Control or ECC unit), central locking malfunctions, and issues with the power windows. Suspension components, such as the struts, control arms, and bushings, are prone to wear and tear, leading to noises and reduced handling. The automatic transmission can experience issues, particularly with slipping or harsh shifting, especially in models with higher mileage or those that haven't received regular fluid changes.

Recalls have been issued for various S60 models over the years, including potential issues with the fuel pump relay and airbags. It's crucial to check the VIN on the NHTSA website to see if any recalls apply to a specific 2004 S60. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned electrical and transmission issues. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly, is crucial to extending the lifespan of these vehicles. Some owners have also reported issues with the engine's PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system, which can lead to oil leaks and other problems if not properly maintained. Early signs of trouble should not be ignored.

How long will the 2004 Volvo S60 last?

Given their age, most 2004 Volvo S60s have accumulated significant mileage, often ranging from 150,000 to 250,000 miles or more. Years of service can easily exceed 15-20 years. Long-term durability largely depends on maintenance habits. With diligent upkeep, these cars can last well beyond 200,000 miles. However, neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear of suspension components, transmission issues, and electrical problems. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items, and addressing issues promptly are crucial. The automatic transmission and electrical system are the most significant weaknesses over time.

I purchased my 2004 Volvo S60 AWD T 2.5 new in Northern Illinois and have never been sorry. It spent 8 years in the Chicago winters and there isn't a speck of rust on it. We retired to central Florida in 2012 and it is fairing just as well in the summer heat. This car is borderline bullet proof and the only thing that has gone wrong is it was rear ended in 2009 and the AC compressor was replaced in 2015. It's nice to own a vehicle that outlasts the payments by 9 years. It has 124k around town miles on it which says a lot for it. This baby will be in my garage long after I'm gone.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Volvo S60 featured a decent array of tech for its time, primarily focused on safety. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and front and side airbags. Volvo was renowned for its safety innovations, and the S60 was no exception. Entertainment was centered around a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Optional features included a premium sound system, a sunroof, and leather upholstery.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, with cruise control being a notable inclusion. Optional features such as heated seats were available for added comfort. The navigation system, while available as an option, is outdated by modern standards.

Crash-test ratings were generally excellent. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) both awarded the S60 high marks for its crash performance. These ratings are a testament to Volvo's commitment to safety. Keep in mind that these ratings are relative to vehicles of the same era. While the S60 was considered very safe in 2004, modern vehicles have advanced safety technology that offer even greater protection.

2004 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Volvo S60 ranged from around $27,000 to $35,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level. T5 models in good condition command a higher price than base models. A clean title and documented service history also significantly boost resale value.

2004 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Volvo S60 are relatively low due to its age and value. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, but expect moderate fuel consumption. Maintenance can be more expensive compared to domestic cars, especially for specialized repairs. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance. Neglecting repairs can lead to costly issues. While not the most economical, it can be affordable if well-maintained.

200k miles and still going strong!

I seriously love this car! Looks, comfort, reliability, and more! I have 204k+ miles on this little beast and she keeps going! Even the stock speakers, developed by Volvo themselves, sounds fantastic! I still put in a touchscreen, two 12" subs, and a 1000 watt amp just to kick it up a notch 😉 I really love this car though, it changed my entire opinion on Volvos. Fun to drive and looking great doing it!

2015K miles and still runs like a champ

This is a great car for someone on a budget, if they are well maintained they do seem to go forever. The downside is parts are expensive but that is because they are high quality. The car droves great, a good balance of performance and comfort.
