What Problems Does the 2008 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Volvo S60 often revolve around the electronic throttle module (ETM), which can cause erratic idling or stalling. This was a more common issue in earlier model years, but can still surface. Suspension components, particularly the front control arm bushings and struts, are known to wear out, leading to clunking noises and reduced handling performance. Turbocharger failures can occur, especially in models with higher mileage or those that haven't received consistent maintenance. Oil leaks from various engine seals and gaskets are another common concern. Electrical issues, such as problems with the climate control system or power windows, can also arise.
Recalls for the 2008 S60 were issued for potential issues related to the fuel pump relay, which could cause the engine to stall. Check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls. Long-term reliability can be affected by the wear and tear on the turbocharger and automatic transmission, especially if regular maintenance is neglected. Properly maintaining the cooling system is also crucial to prevent overheating and potential engine damage. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended to identify any existing or potential problems.

How long will the 2008 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Volvo S60 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 15+ years of service. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent upkeep. Neglecting routine maintenance, like oil changes and timely replacement of wear items, will significantly shorten its lifespan. Key weaknesses over time include potential turbocharger failure, transmission wear (especially in automatics), suspension component degradation, and electronic issues related to sensors and modules. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are crucial for maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Volvo S60 came equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a premium sound system with a CD player and available satellite radio. Some models offered a navigation system as an optional upgrade. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, but included cruise control and ABS.
Safety was a major selling point, with standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Volvo's Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) was also standard. Optional safety features included rear parking sensors.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good. The S60 earned "Good" ratings in most crash tests, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also provided crash test ratings. While not cutting-edge by today's standards, the 2008 S60 provided a solid foundation of safety features, in line with Volvo's reputation.

2008 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Volvo S60 ranged from approximately $28,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S60 has depreciated significantly over time, as expected for a vehicle of its age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and trim level. Models in excellent condition with low mileage and a complete service record command higher prices. The availability of rare or desirable features (like the "R" trim) can also positively impact resale value.

2008 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2008 Volvo S60 are generally moderate, comparable to other vehicles in its class. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and the specific engine, but expect average fuel consumption. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if specialized Volvo parts or mechanics are required. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial due to potential repairs common in older vehicles. While initially affordable to purchase used, the 2008 S60 can become costly to own if not properly maintained, making it more economical for those willing to invest in preventative maintenance.

2008 Volvo S60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Volvo S60 competed with vehicles like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Acura TSX, and Lexus IS. In terms of performance, the BMW 3 Series generally offered sharper handling, while the S60 "R" provided competitive power. Feature-wise, the S60 was well-equipped, but some rivals offered more advanced technology. Reliability is where the Volvo arguably stood out, often considered more reliable than the BMW and Audi, but perhaps slightly less so than the Lexus. Price-wise, the used S60 is often more affordable than its German counterparts.
Alternatives to the S60 include the Acura TSX, known for its reliability and value; the Lexus IS, offering a smoother ride and strong resale value; and the Infiniti G35, which provides a sportier driving experience. A well-maintained Acura TSX might be a better choice for buyers prioritizing reliability above all else, while someone seeking a more engaging driving experience might prefer the Infiniti G35. The 2008 Volvo S60 provides a balanced package, particularly for buyers prioritizing safety and understated luxury at an affordable price point. However, careful inspection and maintenance records are essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Volvo S60 is a solid choice for buyers seeking a safe, comfortable, and reliable used sedan with a touch of Scandinavian flair. It's ideal for budget-conscious individuals or families who prioritize safety features and a comfortable ride over outright performance. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and maintenance history. A well-maintained example with low mileage is a good value, particularly the 2.5T or T5 trims. The "R" is desirable but requires careful inspection due to its performance-oriented components. Avoid examples with a spotty service record or signs of neglect. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Volvo mechanic is highly recommended before committing to a purchase.

Most reliable and safe care I’ve owned

This car has comfort, safety, gets me from point A to B with no issues in all for seasonal weather. You can easily transport 4 people in this car (family of four) little children and car seats with plenty of space. I really am sad to sell this because it been the best car.

Solid Car

Volvo is not the most exciting car inside, but it is definitely a safe car with some real pep. And the front seats are extremely comfortable.

All-Around Performer

This car sips gas, has turbo-power when you really need it, has a great stereo system, power-everything, handy cruise-control, sunroof, and a very comfortable leather interior. The only things I don't like are the dashboard lights were on for tire pressure warning and traction control service for most of the time I owned it. The tire pressure sensors were worn out when I got the car, and the traction control unit was a $900 part that I never did miss.
