The Good
The 2017 Volvo S60 offers a blend of performance and comfort. Its turbocharged engines provide ample power. The design is sleek and understated, appealing to those who value Scandinavian aesthetics. It boasts strong safety credentials and a comfortable interior, satisfying both practical needs and emotional desires for a safe and stylish vehicle. While reliability can be a concern (see known weaknesses), many find the ownership experience rewarding.
The Bad
The 2017 Volvo S60's potential weaknesses include reported issues with the electronic systems, such as the infotainment screen and sensors. Analysis
What Problems Does the 2017 Volvo S60 Have?
Long-term reliability concerns often involve the turbocharged engines. While powerful, they can be susceptible to oil consumption issues. The T6 engine, with its turbocharger and supercharger, is more complex and may require more maintenance. Turbocharger failure, although not widespread, is something to be aware of.
Recalls can vary, so checking the NHTSA website with the specific VIN is crucial. Common recall areas across various Volvo models of this era include fuel leaks, airbag issues (potentially related to Takata recalls), and software glitches that can affect vehicle performance or safety systems. Thorough maintenance records are critical when considering a used 2017 S60, as is a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Volvo vehicles.
How long will the 2017 Volvo S60 last?
Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned electronic issues and turbocharger wear. Models with the T6 engine, being more complex, might require more frequent servicing. Rust is generally not a major concern, but inspecting the undercarriage, especially in areas with harsh winters, is advisable. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Standard driver-assistance features include City Safety (automatic emergency braking), which can help mitigate or avoid collisions at low speeds. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and park assist pilot (automatic parking).
Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The 2017 S60 typically received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). These ratings often included top scores for overall safety and specific crashworthiness categories. It’s recommended to check the official IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most accurate and up-to-date ratings. Volvo's focus on safety is evident in the S60's design and included technology, making it a strong contender in its class for safety-conscious buyers.

2017 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value
The S60 depreciates at a moderate rate, similar to other luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it's a highly desirable trim like the Polestar. Models with fewer reported issues and a clean title will command higher prices.

How Does the 2017 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is where the S60 can fall slightly behind. The Lexus IS and Acura TLX are often cited as being more reliable. The Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offer a similar level of luxury and technology, but may also have higher maintenance costs.
Price-wise, the S60 is often positioned competitively. Alternatives to consider would be the Lexus IS for its reliability and smooth ride, or the BMW 3 Series for its engaging driving dynamics. If reliability is a top priority, the Acura TLX is also a good choice. Each offers a different balance of luxury, performance, and reliability, so the best option depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?
Specifically, look for models with fewer reported issues and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Volvo mechanic. The T5 engine offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the T6 provides more power but may require more maintenance. If you value performance, the Polestar is an excellent option, but be prepared for higher running costs. Avoid neglecting maintenance to keep ownership enjoyable.

I was reluctant on buying another S60 as my previous 2012I was reluctant on buying another S60 as my previous 2012 model had engine issues that led to engine failure at just 120,000 miles. However, with the 2017 model having a new engine and transmission setup, I decided to give it another shot. At 115,000 miles I haven’t experienced any mechanical issues of any sort. The performance is pretty great for the small 2.0 liter engine pumping 240 hp which pairs pretty well with the 8 speed automatic transmission sourced from Toyota. The interior is very beautiful with the real leather seats, however for 2017 it was definitely starting to age. The exterior design is absolutely immaculate, however at 7 years old it has started to experience paint chips leading to minor rust. I wouldn’t 100% blame the paint as rocks and road debris also contributed to this. The comfort in the seats is very amazing, however it’s not perfect as the cabin noise is louder than most other luxury cars. Overall I love this car and have been very pleased with its improved reliability.

Absolutely beautiful vehicleThe car feels and drives amazing. I’m absolutely in love with my new Volvo S60. It’s got way more features than my sisters 2017 Malibu that’s for sure 😂🤣. And the satellite remote start and locking doors are absolutely amazing.

2017 S60 T6 R-Design PlatinumOwned the car for a few months now, its the wifes daily driver as mine is an S3. The car feels extremely well built and very solid even compared to the Audi. Performance wise our only complaint has been the slow shifts of the gearbox when in manual mode. Apart from that 30k miles and not a single issue. Only shop time is maintenance.

Great CarI bought my S60 T5 Dynamic in April. I drive a lot so already put almost 5000 miles on. It has performed mostly flawlessly, the only thing is every now and then the transmission can get a little confused at low speeds. This car handles very well and is a blast to drive every day. The infotainment interface is a bit dated by today's standards but it is intuitive and easy to use. Great sound system, too. I have the sport seats and they are ok, but maybe a bit over bolstered for daily driving. Overall, this is a comfortable cruiser that is fun to drive and I get compliments on it all the time. Can't wait to try out the AWD this winter!

Fantastic Car!Best vehicle for the price! Smooth driving and great comfort, plus it is the safest car out there. Paid $40,000 for it and would pay more - totally worth it!

Reliable vehicleThis is my 4th Volvo. I have found them to be reliable, comfortable and fun to drive. They are well built, comfortable and loaded with many safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear camera and driver and passenger air bags.

Great driving car for the money!!This car met all my needs for a 4-door luxury sedan with out having to pay a much higher price for a BMW, Audi or Lexus. A friend and neighbor had bought a 2015 version of the same car and when in the market unexpectedly after my Acura TL was totaled, I was very impressed with the Volvo S60 T5.

Great looks and performanceI’ve owned this vehicle for two years and am completely happy with it. Performance is excellent, mpg is very good and it’s comfortable. I have 35000 miles on it and I still get a lot of complements about how sporty it is.
