What Problems Does the 2018 Volvo S60 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Volvo S60 can include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or glitching. Some owners have mentioned concerns about the electronic systems, including sensors and modules, leading to sporadic error messages. Oil consumption has been reported as an issue in some instances, especially with earlier model years of this generation (though less prevalent in 2018, it's still worth checking).

Recalls for the 2018 Volvo S60 have included issues related to the fuel line potentially leaking, which could increase the risk of a fire. It is crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the complexity of the turbocharged and supercharged engines, particularly in the T6 and T8 models. These more complex systems can potentially lead to higher maintenance costs over time. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and addressing any warning lights promptly, is essential for mitigating these concerns. Some owners have also noted that the automatic transmission can sometimes exhibit rough shifting, particularly at lower speeds.

2018 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Volvo S60 ranged from around $35,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $28,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The S60 depreciates at an average rate for a luxury sedan. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options. Well-maintained models with lower mileage and a clean title command higher prices.

2018 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2018 Volvo S60 are generally moderate for a luxury sedan. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the T5 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the car's European origin and the complexity of some components. Long-term ownership costs are therefore moderately expensive. While the S60 isn't the most economical choice in its class, it's not excessively costly either, particularly if you keep up with scheduled maintenance to avoid major repairs.

How Does the 2018 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo S60 competes with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Lexus IS. The BMW 3 Series generally offers sharper handling and a more engaging driving experience. The Audi A4 boasts a more modern interior and advanced technology. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class provides a luxurious and refined experience. The Lexus IS is known for its exceptional reliability.

In terms of performance, the S60 T6 can match the performance of some rivals, but the base T5 is less sporty. Feature-wise, the S60 is competitive, especially with optional packages. Reliability is generally good but not as stellar as the Lexus IS. Price-wise, the S60 often represents a good value compared to its German competitors.

Alternatives to consider include the Acura TLX, which offers a good balance of features and reliability, and the Infiniti Q50, which provides strong performance at a competitive price. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus IS is a better choice. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the BMW 3 Series is recommended. However, the S60 provides a unique blend of Scandinavian design, safety, and value that appeals to many buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2018 Volvo S60 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, Scandinavian design, and a comfortable ride over outright sportiness. It's a worthwhile purchase, especially on the used market, offering good value for its price. The T5 models are a good choice for those seeking fuel efficiency, while the T6 provides more performance. It's recommended to have a pre-purchase inspection to check for any potential issues, especially related to the electronic systems and turbocharger. A well-maintained, lower-mileage example would be the most desirable. Consider the Inscription trim for added luxury or the R-Design for a sportier look.

Bumper-to-bumper warranty for 10 yrs./100K

Although smaller than most SUVs, this AWD will go anywhere, just as much with the 2.0L turbo as any other. With all of the high-tech options, this one could go anywhere, as well-engineered Swede machine, even though it was assembled in China. Great Progress from Volvo and Great Promises.

Don’t buy Volvo!!!!!! on May 3, 2021

Worst car I’ve ever owned

2 1/2 years old. Sticker was 47k. They say it’s worth 15 with under 30k miles? Had both batteries go bad and Ferman Volvo wanted to charge me over 500 dollars to replace them even though they are under warranty. Called Volvo and they said they would investigate then said I had to pay or go to the battery manufacturer myself. By the way Volvo makes it’s own batteries since 2018. I ended up going to a different dealership who stood behind the warranty and did them for free the way it was supposed to be. But understand. Corporate will do nothing to help you.

Safest car and SO fun to drive!

I have enjoyed this car so much. Its entry level for Volvo but it has so many features I never saw before. The headlights will turn in the direction of the steering wheel. Incredibly safe car in every way. The Volvo S60 is great for road trips, great gas mileage and you only change the oil every 10,000 miles. It has aggressive acceleration and handling which is great if you want to quickly pass someone.

It’s sporty

I never thought I’d own a black car, especially in Florida, but am so glad I bought it. I absolutely love it and the tinted windows. It’s sporty, drives great, and a smooth ride, no issues.

Best SUV I've owned

This car is amazing. I love all its features, especially those aimed at safety and comfort. The lane assist is great. I love the fact that it shows the speed limit of the road you're on. The Apple Play is a great feature. I love the comfort features such as the seats and steering wheel heaters that turn on automatically when it's below 50 degrees. The entertainment center is very comprehensive.

Best car I have ever owned...

The car is great with sporty performance and still gets close to 40 on the highway. It has everything that all the other luxury sedans have and more...at a better price.
