Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Volvo S60 is a compact executive sedan, representing Volvo's commitment to safety, Scandinavian design, and comfortable driving. Part of the second generation S60, which ran from 2010-2018, the 2016 model came in trims like the T5, T6, and R-Design. Pricing ranged approximately from $34,000 to $45,000 new. Its blend of understated elegance, strong safety features, and available powerful engines made it a popular choice for those seeking a premium sedan with a focus on practicality and safety.
The Good

The 2016 Volvo S60 offers a compelling blend of performance and practicality. Its powerful engines provide ample acceleration, while the comfortable ride and supportive seats make it ideal for long journeys. The sleek Scandinavian design appeals to those seeking understated elegance. Solid reliability ratings and Volvo's reputation for safety provide peace of mind for practical buyers, while the driving experience can be emotionally rewarding. Good fuel efficiency for its class adds to the value proposition.

The Bad

The 2016 Volvo S60, while generally reliable, has some potential weaknesses. The Sensus infotainment system can be slow and unintuitive compared to competitors. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic systems, including sensors and modules. Suspension components and bushings may wear out over time, especially on models driven in areas with poor road conditions. Watch for oil consumption in higher-mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2016 Volvo S60 Have?

The 2016 Volvo S60 has a decent reliability record, but some common issues have been reported. The Sensus infotainment system is a frequent source of complaints, with users citing slow response times, glitches, and difficulty connecting to mobile devices. Some owners have reported problems with the electronic systems, including sensors for the parking assist, blind spot monitoring, and other driver-assistance features. These sensors can sometimes malfunction or provide false alerts.

Oil consumption can be an issue, especially in the higher-mileage T5 and T6 engines. Regularly checking the oil level is crucial. Suspension components, particularly bushings and struts, may require replacement sooner than expected, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Transmission issues, although less common, have been reported by some owners, primarily with the automatic transmissions.

Recalls for the 2016 S60 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage, faulty airbags, and problems with the seat belt pretensioners. Check the NHTSA website with the VIN to confirm any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability hinges on diligent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Models equipped with more advanced technology may experience more electronic gremlins as they age. Premature wear of the brake rotors is also a possibility.

How long will the 2016 Volvo S60 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Volvo S60 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items, is crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by factors such as climate, driving style, and road conditions. As these vehicles age, expect potential issues with the electronics, particularly the infotainment system and sensor-based safety features. Suspension components and rubber bushings will likely require replacement to maintain ride quality and handling.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Volvo S60 comes equipped with a range of technology and safety features. The standard Sensus infotainment system includes a 7-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and Volvo On Call, which provides emergency assistance and remote vehicle access. Higher trims offer a navigation system and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat whiplash protection, and multiple airbags. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full auto brake, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and park assist. These features enhance safety and convenience, but their reliability can be a concern over time.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally excellent. The 2016 S60 earned a "Top Safety Pick+" award, indicating strong performance in various crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also gave the S60 a good overall safety rating. Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the S60's design and features, making it a compelling choice for safety-conscious buyers. However, some optional features may be more prone to failure as the car ages.

2016 Volvo S60 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Volvo S60 ranged from around $34,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices generally range from $12,000 to $22,000, varying significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level. The S60 has experienced moderate depreciation, typical for a luxury sedan. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and a comprehensive service record command higher prices. The presence of desirable options and features can also boost resale value. R-Design models and those with the T6 engine tend to hold their value slightly better.

2016 Volvo S60 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Volvo S60's long-term ownership costs are moderate for its class. Insurance premiums are generally average for a luxury sedan. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice and driving habits, with the T5 Drive-E being the most economical. Maintenance can be somewhat expensive, particularly at Volvo dealerships, but independent shops specializing in European cars can offer more competitive rates. Repairs can be costly, especially for electronic components and specialized parts. Overall, it is neither the most economical nor the most costly vehicle to own in its segment.

Insurance for a 2016 Volvo S60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Volvo S60 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Volvo S60 competes with other compact luxury sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS, and Acura TLX. In terms of performance, the S60's T6 engines offer competitive acceleration, though the BMW 3 Series is generally considered sportier. Feature-wise, the S60 is well-equipped, but its Sensus infotainment system lags behind the competition in terms of user-friendliness. Reliability is generally good, but the Lexus IS and Acura TLX have stronger reputations for dependability. Price-wise, the S60 typically offers good value compared to the German brands.

Alternatives to the S60 include: the BMW 3 Series (for sportier handling), the Lexus IS (for superior reliability), the Acura TLX (for a comfortable ride and value), the Audi A4 (for its refined interior and technology), and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (for its luxurious features). Depending on individual priorities (performance, reliability, features, or price), one of these alternatives might be a better fit. The S60 distinguishes itself through its emphasis on safety and unique Scandinavian design. For someone prioritizing safety and comfort, the S60 remains a compelling option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Volvo S60 a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Volvo S60 is a solid choice for buyers prioritizing safety, comfort, and a distinctive Scandinavian design. It's a good option for those who want a luxury sedan without the flashy image of some German rivals. It is worth buying used, especially if you can find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. The T5 Drive-E offers a good balance of fuel economy and performance, while the T6 provides more spirited acceleration. Consider a higher trim level for added features and safety technology. Be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues before committing to the purchase. Avoid examples with high mileage or a history of deferred maintenance.

I absolutely love everything about it!

Everything is wonderful.... The look, style, comfort, gas mileage, everything! I feel fancy and even bought a new pair of high end sunglasses to cruise with 💗💋. My six year old loves to cruise as well! But the beat thing about the vehicle is where we bought it from. Lewisville Autoplex is literally the best business we have ever dealt with, not just car dealerships. We have absolutely never had more "above and beyond" dealings with any other business. Basaam especially is an asset. What a hard working gentleman! In the future, we will go nowhere else but here for a car.

fast, comfortable, safe sports sedan

Excellent car that is deceivingly fast but comfortable. Turbo-charged inline 6 cylinder has outstanding power and torque but still delivers decent gas mileage (23.5 miles/gal combined driving). Has all the safety features one would want and probably some of the most comfortable front seats out there.

No Longer a Wolf, but much more than a sheep

This is the second S60 I have owned, previously having had a 2006 S60R. I traded in that vehicle for my current vehicle, an S60 R Design with the Polestar software upgrade. The current iteration of the “R”, although fast, with great brakes, is not a true sports sedan. The previous vehicle accelerated more quickly, tracked truer, and had a suspension more suited to a car billed as a “performance. ” model. Although my newer R-Design is quite fast, and handles quite well, it possesses an inherent “softness” which lowers the fun quotient a bit.

Best car I've ever owned.

This car is above what I thought it would be. The performance is excellent. The S60 has an awesome phone app that allows me to start my car remotely, a map that gives my car location and it reminds me that my doors are unlocked. I love it!😊

Great handling car! Suspension gives a smooth ride

This car is everything I desire in a premier auto. The safety features are first rate from the rear view screen to the multiple air bags. The styling is exquisite, very comfortable. The leg room in the rear seating is roomier than the other cars in this class.

The safest and most luxurious car I’ve ever owned!

I had a 2012 VOLVO and when I decided to get another car, it was a no brained to puchaser a newer car in the same model. The leather interior and all-wheel drive were the main features I was looking for.
