The 2004 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV, part of the second generation (2000-2006) of the Yukon. It's known for its spaciousness, powerful engine options, and truck-like capabilities. Key trims include the SLE and SLT. New pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $45,000 depending on configuration. Its robust build and ability to comfortably haul passengers and cargo contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2004 Yukon offers strong performance thanks to its V8 engines, offering ample power for towing and hauling. It's known for decent reliability when properly maintained. Its spacious interior provides comfort for families. From a practical standpoint, it provides utility, while emotionally it offers a sense of security and capability.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2004 Yukon include potential issues with the transmission, particularly around the 4L60E. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with road salt. Also, keep an eye on the electrical system and the fuel pump, as these components have been known to fail. Fuel economy is also not a strong point.

What Problems Does the 2004 GMC Yukon Have?

The 2004 GMC Yukon, like many vehicles of its era, has some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. Transmission issues, particularly with the 4L60E automatic transmission, are a common complaint. This can manifest as slipping gears or complete failure. Fuel pump failure is another recurring issue, potentially leaving owners stranded.
Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas where road salt is used. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells for corrosion. Electrical problems, including issues with the instrument cluster and power windows, have also been reported.
Recalls for the 2004 Yukon included issues related to the fuel system and airbags. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the engine and transmission, as well as the durability of the body and frame in rust-prone environments. Regular maintenance and careful inspection are crucial for mitigating these risks. Some owners have also reported issues with the climate control system and the stability control system.

How long will the 2004 GMC Yukon last?

A well-maintained 2004 GMC Yukon can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and attention to cooling system maintenance, many owners have reported exceeding this mileage. Poor maintenance habits, however, can significantly shorten its lifespan. Neglecting fluid changes, ignoring warning lights, and skipping routine inspections will lead to premature component failure. The primary long-term weaknesses include rust, transmission wear, and potential engine issues due to age and mileage. The durability of the interior components, such as the seats and dashboard, can also degrade over time depending on usage and climate.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 GMC Yukon's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered options like a Bose premium sound system, rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player (optional), and OnStar connectivity for emergency services and navigation assistance.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and traction control were standard. Some models had optional features such as rear parking sensors. Safety features included dual front airbags and side-impact airbags (optional).
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2004 GMC Yukon were generally good for frontal and side impacts. However, rollover ratings were typically lower, which is common for SUVs of that era. It's important to note that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2004, so while it was considered safe at the time, modern vehicles offer far more sophisticated safety systems. Consider this when comparing the 2004 Yukon to newer options. Keep in mind stability control was often optional, not standard.

2004 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

The 2004 GMC Yukon had a new price range of approximately $30,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Yukon has depreciated significantly over the years. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has been involved in any accidents. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and evidence of regular maintenance command higher prices. Rust-free examples are especially desirable.

2004 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2004 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own compared to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Insurance costs are moderate. Fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be relatively inexpensive if you perform basic tasks yourself, but repairs can be costly, especially for transmission or engine work. Long-term ownership costs can add up due to the age of the vehicle and the potential for unexpected repairs. It is not an economical choice.

2004 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2004 GMC Yukon competed with full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. In terms of performance, the Yukon's V8 engines were comparable to its rivals. The Expedition offered a similar driving experience. Features were also fairly similar across the board, although the Denali trim offered a more luxurious experience than some competitors.
Reliability is a mixed bag. The Yukon's transmission issues were also present in the Tahoe (essentially the same vehicle). The Expedition had its own set of potential problems. The Nissan Armada was generally considered more reliable.
Price-wise, the Yukon was competitive when new. Used prices are now largely determined by condition and mileage.
Alternatives to the 2004 Yukon include:
  • Chevrolet Tahoe: A virtually identical vehicle, so consider whichever is in better condition.
  • Ford Expedition: Offers similar capabilities and a slightly different driving experience.
  • Nissan Armada: Generally more reliable, but may lack some of the Yukon's refinement.
Depending on your priorities, a newer, smaller SUV might offer better fuel economy and safety features, although it won't match the Yukon's towing capacity or interior space.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2004 GMC Yukon is ideal for buyers needing a large, capable SUV for towing, hauling cargo, or transporting a large family. It's worth buying *if* you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and have a mechanic inspect it thoroughly before purchase. Prioritize rust-free vehicles. A higher trim level like the SLT offers more desirable features, but the SLE can be a good value if you're on a budget. Don't expect great fuel economy or the latest technology. Consider newer vehicles if modern safety features are a priority. It's only worth it if you need the size and capability and find a good deal on a well-maintained vehicle. Otherwise, look at newer, more efficient options.

Fantastic engine!

I have an 04' Denali with the 6.0 engine. I'm at mile 399,00 and still going. Only complaint is some electrical issues but nothing too major. Definitely the most reliable engine I have ever driven.

Best vehicle we have ever owned

We bought this slightly used in 2004 and we currently have 375000 miles on it. It still runs and rides just like it did the day we bought it. We have only had to replace the fuel pump and brake lines which is normal for a high mileage vehicle. The instrument cluster did go out at about 100k but with a little time we fixed it and it has never bothered since.

I've never been disappointed in it.

I have always loved this car. Truly a great utility vehicle, and incredibly reliable. It's always been very well taken care of, always had a garage as home.

Owned my 2004 Yukon Denali for 14 years.

I traded this vehicle in at about 115,000 miles, which is quite low compared to others I have seen. I always thought the Yukon/Tahoe body style looked better than the larger XL/Suburban. In terms of practicality, I should have opted for the XL. The gas mileage was almost identical, but the cargo capacity of the XL would have fit me better. Over the years, I replaced tires, shocks, and batteries like everyone else. The rear air suspension replacement was a little tricky. Had to replace both air shocks, plus the compressor. I also had to replace the gage cluster, seat motor (twice), and the rear view mirror due to electronics. Many of these vehicles are being parted out, so replacement parts are quite reasonable, compared to dealer prices. The last thing that went wrong was the evap/charcoal system, which was my fault for over-filling the tank. This was even more frustrating because the computer was not sophisticated enough to tell me what particular component was bad. I had to replace everything, then found out that one of the (new) after-market replacement parts was bad. If you buy one and purchase an additional warranty, make sure it includes the electronics. And do not overfill the gas tank.

LOVE IT, Chevy/GMC or nothing

Recently bought this. Also own a 96 2 door Tahoe and she's a beast, still going strong at 308,000 miles. I only bought this yukon because I recently sold my backup vehicle, which was a Ford Explorer. Never had a GMC, knew it meant more features/luxury, but omg I'm in love with it. The ride is amazing and the 5.3 v8 is plenty of power. If you're thinking about a yukon, go with the SLT model. It's got all the goodies, you won't regret it!
