Pricing ranged from approximately $50,000 to $75,000 new. Its popularity stems from its powerful engine options, ample cargo space, and reputation as a capable family hauler, particularly the luxurious Denali trim, which offers upscale features and styling.
The Good

What Problems Does the 2020 GMC Yukon Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 GMC Yukon, and previous model years of this generation, include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing or glitching. Some owners have also reported problems with the transmission, specifically hard shifting or slipping. Issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which deactivates cylinders to improve fuel economy, have also been reported, sometimes leading to excessive oil consumption. Recalls for the 2020 Yukon have been issued for issues such as faulty seat belt retractors and potential brake system malfunctions. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the AFM system and the longevity of the transmission, especially in models with higher mileage. Potential buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's service history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues before purchasing. Specific recalls can be verified on the NHTSA website using the VIN.

How long will the 2020 GMC Yukon last?

With proper maintenance, the 2020 GMC Yukon can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system maintenance are crucial. Long-term durability largely depends on mitigating potential AFM issues and addressing any transmission concerns promptly. Weaknesses over time often manifest as wear and tear on suspension components, interior trim, and electronic systems. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters. Consistent maintenance and addressing minor issues early can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 GMC Yukon comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Entertainment features include a standard six-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades to Bose premium sound. Driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and available features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and automatic emergency braking. Safety features encompass multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control. Optional features include adaptive cruise control and a head-up display. The NHTSA gave the 2020 Yukon an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. IIHS crash test ratings vary, and it's recommended to check the IIHS website for specific test results. Higher trims like the Denali offer enhanced features like navigation, premium audio, and advanced safety technologies. The built-in tech is generally user-friendly, though some users have reported occasional glitches with the infotainment system. The available driver-assistance features enhance safety and convenience, making it a well-equipped SUV for families.

2020 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

The 2020 GMC Yukon had a starting MSRP of around $50,000, with the Denali trim reaching upwards of $75,000 when new. Current used market prices range from approximately $35,000 to $55,000, depending on trim, mileage, and condition. The Yukon depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors such as mileage, condition, trim level (Denali models retain value better), and location. Demand for large SUVs also impacts resale value, with higher fuel prices potentially leading to slower depreciation. A clean title and documented maintenance history are key factors in maintaining resale value.

2020 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2020 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate to high, reflecting its size and value. Fuel costs are significant due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance, including regular servicing and potential repairs to the transmission or AFM system, contributes to higher ownership costs. While generally reliable, repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership requires a commitment to preventative maintenance to mitigate potential costly repairs down the road. Overall, it's not an economical choice.

2020 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 GMC Yukon competes with the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada. The Tahoe is mechanically similar and typically less expensive. The Expedition offers more spacious third-row seating and often better fuel economy with its turbocharged engine. The Armada provides a more value-oriented proposition with similar features at a lower price point, but may lack the Yukon's prestige. In terms of performance, the Yukon's V8 engines are competitive, but fuel economy lags behind the Expedition. Reliability is comparable across the board, though each model has its potential weaknesses. Feature-wise, the Yukon offers a good balance, especially in the Denali trim. For buyers prioritizing space and fuel efficiency, the Ford Expedition is a compelling alternative. For budget-conscious buyers, the Nissan Armada offers similar capabilities at a lower price. The Chevrolet Tahoe is a similar alternative, offering most of the same features at a slightly lower price point, differing mainly in styling and trim options. Consider the buyer's specific needs and priorities when choosing between these options.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 GMC Yukon is ideal for families needing a spacious SUV with strong towing capabilities and a comfortable ride. It's worth buying, particularly on the used market, if found in good condition with a solid maintenance history. The Denali trim offers a luxurious experience, but commands a higher price. Buyers should carefully inspect for potential transmission and AFM issues. Consider a pre-purchase inspection. For those prioritizing fuel economy or third-row space, alternatives like the Ford Expedition may be better suited. If luxury is a must-have and the budget allows, a well-maintained Denali is a strong contender. Otherwise, a lower trim offers good value.

Buy one if you can afford it

Excellent and reliable, only thing buyers have to do is buy a AFM disabler that you can stick into OBD2 port to avoid lifter failure (longer story, nobody wants a V8 to run in V4)

2020 Yukon SLE. Highly recommend!

I previously wrote a review back in 2021 While I was leasing this vehicle. Which still shows up. I just wanted to give an update. I ended up purchasing it after the lease ended. So glad I did. I absolutely love this vehicle. Everything about it. Minus the high back end and price of gas but you're gonna get that with V8 engine. Have had since the spring of 2020. Haven't had any issues at all. Still would highly recommend. Comfort, look, safety, practical, A+ Best vehicle I have ever bought. I would normally have been in a new vehicle by now, I use to upgrade every couple years but not after this purchase, Still very 😊 happy

My 2nd Yukon in 3 Years

I just traded in my 2016 Yukon SLT for this 2019 Yukon Denali. I love the way it drives. It drives very tight and is extremely responsive for a big vehicle. The interior is very comfortable and the technology is great.

Super satisfied customer

This SUV is exactly what I wanted. I'm really fussy about safe and easy to operate instrument panel selections, radio operation and ease of entry for myself and my small wife. I looked at many other models and model years and could not be more happy with my selection. Thanks to Mike Sandstrom and Tim for their help in making this happen!

Yukon SLE

Too HIGH of a backend. Have to climb up in to load anything. I'm 5'6. Love the look of the vehicle interior and exterior. Runs smooth. I have always purchased cloth interior for any vehicle I have ever owned that is just what I prefer. However, for the price of this vehicle, it has very cheap cloth and does NOT clean well at all as have Other vehicles I have owned owned. Love the fact that it halls my 5x10 trailer smoothly. I have the bench in the 2nd row for 3 kids works well ages 10,15,19. I love the large armrest between the driver and passenger seat. Most importantly I feel safe in this vehicle.
