The 2000 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV, part of the second generation that ran from 2000 to 2006. It's known for its robust build and capability. Key trims included SLE and SLT. Expect a used price range of around $3,000-$8,000, depending on condition and mileage. The Yukon was popular for its spaciousness, powerful V8 engine options, and towing capacity, making it a great family vehicle or workhorse.
The Good

The 2000 GMC Yukon offers strong V8 performance and decent reliability for its age, appealing to practical buyers needing power. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior cater to families. While not the most efficient, its classic SUV design and relative affordability provide emotional satisfaction and good value for those seeking a capable, pre-owned vehicle.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2000 GMC Yukon include potential transmission issues, especially with higher mileage. Rust can be a problem, particularly in colder climates. Electrical glitches and issues with the HVAC system are also frequently reported. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these potential problems.

What Problems Does the 2000 GMC Yukon Have?

The 2000 GMC Yukon has several frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. Transmission issues, particularly slipping or failure, are common, especially after 150,000 miles. Owners also report problems with the automatic transfer case in 4WD models. Rust, especially around the rear wheel wells and undercarriage, is a significant concern, impacting structural integrity. The HVAC system often suffers from issues like malfunctioning blend doors and compressor failures, resulting in poor heating or cooling.

Electrical issues, including malfunctioning gauges, power windows, and door locks, are also reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the fuel pump and fuel injectors. The 2000 model year had several recalls related to safety and emissions, including issues with the fuel system and seat belt retractors. Checking the VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website is recommended to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the durability of the engine and transmission components, as well as the deterioration of rubber and plastic parts due to age. Regular maintenance and proactive repairs are crucial for extending the lifespan of a 2000 GMC Yukon.

How long will the 2000 GMC Yukon last?

A well-maintained 2000 GMC Yukon can realistically reach 200,000 to 250,000 miles, or 20-25 years of service. However, mileage and lifespan depend heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and other essential services will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term weaknesses include rust, which can compromise the frame and body. Suspension components, such as ball joints and bushings, also wear out over time, affecting ride quality and handling. Electrical components are another area prone to failure as the vehicle ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 GMC Yukon's built-in tech was fairly basic by today's standards. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a cassette player, and optional features included a CD player and a premium sound system (Bose). Driver-assistance features were limited; cruise control was standard. Available safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS) and dual front airbags. OnStar was an optional feature, providing emergency assistance and remote diagnostics.

The Yukon did not have advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, or automatic emergency braking. Entertainment was primarily focused on audio playback. Optional features like rear-seat entertainment systems were not common for this model year.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good performance for frontal impacts, but side-impact protection was less impressive. It's important to remember that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2000, so modern vehicles offer superior protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may have conducted limited testing on this model. The availability and effectiveness of safety features were significantly lower compared to modern vehicles.

2000 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

The 2000 GMC Yukon had a starting MSRP of around $27,000 to $35,000 when new, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, influenced by condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age. Factors affecting resale value include the presence of rust, mechanical condition, mileage, and overall appearance. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and no rust command higher prices. The availability of service records also positively impacts resale value.

2000 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2000 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own long-term. Insurance rates are moderate. Fuel economy is poor, especially in city driving. Maintenance can be expensive due to the age of the vehicle and potential for repairs. Common repairs like transmission work or rust repair can significantly increase ownership costs. While initial purchase price is low, the ongoing expenses make it a less economical choice compared to newer, more efficient vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

2000 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2000 GMC Yukon competed with the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Dodge Durango. Compared to the Expedition, the Yukon offered similar performance and towing capacity, but the Expedition often had a slightly more refined interior. The Tahoe, being mechanically identical to the Yukon, provides a similar experience at a potentially lower price point, depending on condition and availability. The Durango was smaller and less powerful than the Yukon.

In terms of reliability, the Yukon is comparable to its rivals, with similar issues related to transmissions and rust. Features were generally on par with the competition. Price-wise, the Yukon is in the same range as the Tahoe and Expedition in the used market. For similar or potentially better alternatives, consider a newer, well-maintained Tahoe or Yukon from the 2003-2006 range, which may offer slightly improved reliability and features. Alternatively, a newer crossover SUV might provide better fuel economy and modern technology, albeit with reduced towing capacity.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2000 GMC Yukon is ideal for someone needing a large, capable SUV on a tight budget. It's worth buying only if you're prepared for potential maintenance and repair costs associated with an older vehicle. A used 2000 Yukon can be a viable option if it has been well-maintained, has minimal rust, and comes with detailed service records. Opting for a higher trim like SLT can offer more comfort features, but SLE models can also be a good value. Thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic before purchase is highly recommended to avoid costly surprises. Consider newer models if reliability and modern features are priorities.

I got over 400,000 miles out of my Yukon!

I bought my Yukon used and drove it for over 12 years! Finally said goodbye at 409,000 miles. It was comfortable, reliable and never left me stranded even when it had an issue. I kept it serviced regularly and repaired what it needed. It was large enough to haul landscape timbers and doors when I was remodeling, the seats were easy to fold down in the back and it had all the storage I needed. I wish they still made them like they used to!

My Yukon lasted over 400,000 Miles!

I bought a used 2000 Yukon SLT back in 2005 and drove it for 12 years. I finally replaced it last year at 409,000 miles! I maintained it regularly and repaired a few things from time to time, but overall this vehicle was very reliable!
