The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a symbol of rugged luxury, traces its roots back to military vehicles of the late 1970s. The 2019 model year marks a significant redesign of this iconic SUV, retaining its boxy body style. Key trims include the G550 and the high-performance AMG G63. Pricing ranged from approximately $125,000 to over $150,000 when new. Its blend of off-road capability, luxurious appointments, and distinctive design contributes to its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2019 G-Class boasts exceptional off-road performance and a powerful engine, appealing to those seeking adventure. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride cater to comfort-focused buyers. The iconic design is a major emotional draw. While not the most efficient, it holds its value well and offers a unique ownership experience.

The Bad

The 2019 G-Class has some weaknesses. Fuel economy is poor. It can feel large and cumbersome in city driving. Some early models suffered from minor software glitches. High maintenance costs and potentially complex repairs should also be considered. The side-exit exhaust on the AMG models can be a burn hazard.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Have?

While the 2019 G-Class is a relatively new design, some owners have reported issues. Software glitches, particularly affecting the infotainment system and driver-assistance features, have been noted. Some owners have reported problems with the adaptive suspension.

Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including potential issues with the fuel system and airbags. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchase.

Long-term reliability is still being assessed, but some concerns exist about the complexity of the electronics and the potential for expensive repairs on the turbocharged engine and advanced suspension components. Given its off-road focus, suspension and drivetrain components may experience accelerated wear if frequently used in harsh conditions. The AMG G63, with its higher-performance engine and components, might require more frequent maintenance and have a higher potential for costly repairs compared to the G550.

How long will the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 G-Class can provide well over 150,000 miles or 10 years of service. However, adhering to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule is crucial. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items are essential for longevity. Long-term durability concerns revolve around the complex electronics and potential for corrosion, especially in areas with harsh winters. Suspension components, especially on vehicles frequently used off-road, can be a long-term weakness. Proper storage can also help.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 G-Class boasts a comprehensive suite of technology features. Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch infotainment display with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The COMAND infotainment system, while feature-rich, can have a learning curve.

Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include parking assist and a surround-view camera system.

Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. While the 2019 G-Class wasn't specifically crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, the robust construction and comprehensive safety features contribute to occupant protection. Consider that the high center of gravity might impact rollover performance compared to lower vehicles.

The entertainment system features a premium sound system. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment system. The driver assistance systems, while helpful, aren't foolproof and require driver attention.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class had a starting MSRP around $125,000 for the G550 and around $147,000 for the AMG G63. Current used market prices range from approximately $90,000 to $150,000+, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. The G-Class holds its value exceptionally well due to its iconic status and limited production. Low mileage, excellent condition, and desirable options (like the AMG package) significantly boost resale value. However, high mileage or a history of accidents will negatively impact the price.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2019 G-Class is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to the vehicle's value and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, especially for the AMG G63, due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs are considerably higher than average for SUVs in its class. Plan for premium fuel and potentially frequent maintenance needs.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 G-Class competes with the Land Rover Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, and Bentley Bentayga. Compared to the Range Rover, the G-Class offers more rugged off-road capability but less sophisticated on-road handling. The Escalade provides more interior space and a lower price point, but lacks the G-Class's iconic styling and off-road prowess. The Bentayga offers a more luxurious interior and refined driving experience but at a significantly higher price.

In terms of reliability, the Range Rover has a similar reputation, while the Escalade tends to be more reliable. The G-Class stands out with its unique design and impressive off-road abilities.

Alternatives to consider include the Lexus LX for a blend of luxury and reliability, or a well-equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee for off-road capability at a lower price. However, none of these alternatives offer the same blend of status, off-road prowess, and distinctive design as the G-Class. For purely off-road needs, a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon might be a better, more economical choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a blend of luxury, off-road capability, and iconic styling, and who are willing to accept its compromises, like poor fuel economy and high running costs. Whether it's "worth" buying depends on individual priorities. It's a status symbol as much as a functional vehicle. A used G-Class can be a good value if thoroughly inspected and properly maintained. Consider the G550 for a slightly more sensible choice, or the AMG G63 if performance is a top priority. Ensure any prospective purchase has a clean service history and no outstanding recalls. Factor in significant budget for maintenance and potential repairs.

Not too great

This is a very unreliable car. I would not recommend anyone to buy it. Also, the prices are too high at the moment, and it's going down very fast. Just wait.
