The Good
The 2005 G-Class boasts exceptional off-road performance thanks to its robust four-wheel-drive system and solid axles. It offers a comfortable and luxurious interior. The iconic, rugged design is a major emotional draw, while its durability and prestige appeal to practical buyers seeking a dependable and status-worthy vehicle, despite its poor fuel efficiency.
The Bad
The 2005 G-Class has notable weaknesses. Fuel economy is poor. Handling can be cumbersome on paved roads due to its high center of gravity and off-road focus. Potential buyers should watch out for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Maintenance and repair costs can be high due to the vehicle's complexity and specialized parts.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Have?
Other long-term reliability concerns revolve around the complex four-wheel-drive system, which can require expensive repairs if not properly maintained. The suspension components are also prone to wear and tear, especially if the vehicle is frequently used off-road. Oil leaks from the engine and transmission are not uncommon as the vehicle ages.
While specific recalls for the 2005 model year may be found on the NHTSA website, general G-Class concerns often relate to brake line corrosion and potential fuel leaks. Owners should meticulously inspect the vehicle's service history and conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to identify and address any potential issues. Regular maintenance, including rustproofing and fluid changes, is crucial for mitigating long-term reliability concerns.
How long will the 2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Built-in Tech & Entertainment: It came standard with a premium sound system, CD player, and available navigation system. The infotainment system was rudimentary compared to modern touchscreens, relying on buttons and a small display. Some models included a multi-disc CD changer.
Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were limited. It included cruise control, but lacked modern features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.
Safety Features: Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), front airbags, and side airbags. The G-Class also featured a robust body-on-frame construction, which contributed to its perceived safety. However, due to its design, it may not perform as well in modern crash tests as unibody SUVs.
Optional Features: Optional features included heated seats, a sunroof, and upgraded leather upholstery. Some models may have been equipped with a trailer hitch for towing.
Crash-Test Ratings: Official crash test ratings for the 2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class from the IIHS and NHTSA are difficult to find. Due to its unique design and limited production numbers, it was not always subjected to the same testing procedures as other vehicles. The focus was more on its off-road capability and durability rather than achieving top safety ratings in standardized crash tests.

How Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Compare to Other Vehicle?
Performance: The G-Class offered solid V8 performance, but the Range Rover provided a more refined on-road experience. The Hummer H2 was less luxurious but offered similar off-road prowess.
Features: The G-Class offered a blend of luxury features, but the Range Rover typically had more advanced technology and a more comfortable ride.
Reliability: The G-Class and Range Rover both had potential reliability issues, while the Hummer H2 was generally considered more reliable.
Price: The G-Class was typically more expensive than the Hummer H2 but similar in price to the Range Rover.
Alternatives: If off-road capability isn't a primary concern, a Range Rover offers more luxury and refinement. If budget is a concern and ruggedness is key, the Hummer H2 might be considered, but it lacks the prestige of the G-Class. A well-maintained Toyota Land Cruiser from a similar era could be a more reliable and slightly more affordable alternative, sacrificing some of the G-Wagen's panache. Ultimately, the G-Class appeals to a specific buyer seeking a unique and iconic vehicle above all else.

Best vehicle I have owned.I wont lie, Im not rich and i bought mine used with 157,000 miles on it. HOWEVER, today it has 278,487 miles on it and is STILL working perfectly. Brakes can get a bit pricey though. I paid 200 for new pads. I recommend you change your breaks on time to avoid paying for a new rotor, which is 150 a piece. Tire wear isnt bad, and used tires can be purchased for 30 bucks a piece. Insurance is high, and u pay 100 bucks to fill up every week. OTHER than that stuff, It is comfortable, fast as all get out, built like a tank, more reliable than a toyota, and if this is your only car, perfect for any occasion. Need to help someone move? G. Tow something? G. Race someone? G. Drive to a remote location untouched by man? G. School reunion? G. It is a vehicle that can SERIOUSLY be used in any situation. U can go take your kids to school, go party with your friends, go to the rocky mountains, slide down the mountain face in a mudslide with empties into a marshy pond, run over some ducks, go hunting, pick up the kids, and still have the door opened for u and valet at a fancy long dress and tux banquet. All on the same day, and one car wash later. ALSO to be mentioned, the paint takes considerable force to scratch. It is some kind of scratch resistant paint, in case some bushes brush against your G class while off road. In the case of the hand built G class, you really do get what you pay for. And the reason the price is so high new, is because each one is hand built! Those guys in Austria need to feed their families too. So you pay a bit more to the human who built your car, over a machine that cost 10 bucks a day to run.

A German disaster on 4 wheelsI had the 2005. The exterior of the car is classy. The interior is functional. The ride is tiring over long distances. Gas consumption is a joke. Road holding is very poor. Expect to pay dearly for new brakes and tires on a regular basis. Even though the truck looks great, it is a maintenance nightmare. If money is no object, you won't notice.
