The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen, maintains its iconic, boxy body style rooted in its military origins. While the G-Class has evolved into a luxury SUV, it still has its traditional capabilities. Key trims include the G550 and the high-performance G63 AMG. Pricing in 2015 ranged from around $115,000 to over $140,000. Its unique combination of ruggedness and luxury makes it a status symbol. The G-Class stands out due to its unique design, off-road prowess, and exclusivity.
The Good

The 2015 G-Class boasts formidable off-road performance and a powerful engine, appealing to emotional buyers seeking adventure. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride cater to those prioritizing comfort. The distinctive design is a major selling point. While not the most efficient, its inherent ruggedness and build quality hint at long-term reliability, though at a steep price.

The Bad

The 2015 G-Class suffers from poor fuel economy due to its boxy shape and heavy weight. Handling can be cumbersome on paved roads. Reliability, while generally good, can be expensive to maintain. Watch out for potential rust issues, especially in areas with road salt. The infotainment system is also dated compared to newer models.

What Problems Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Have?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. Rust, especially on older models or in regions with heavy road salt usage, is a potential issue. Owners should inspect body panels and undercarriage for signs of corrosion.
Electrical issues can occur, including problems with the infotainment system, sensors, and lighting. These problems aren't necessarily widespread, but they can be costly to repair due to the G-Class's complex systems. Suspension components, especially bushings and ball joints, can wear out over time, leading to decreased ride quality and handling. Replacement parts tend to be expensive.
The G63 AMG, with its higher-performance engine, might experience issues related to turbochargers or other performance-related components over the long term. Oil leaks are not uncommon in older high-performance engines. The G-Class is known for its thirsty engine. Fuel pump and fuel injector issues can arise. Recalls for the 2015 model year are relatively infrequent but always check the NHTSA website for the latest information. Preventative maintenance is crucial to prolong the life of the G-Class and minimize potential problems.

How long will the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting well over 15 years. The key to longevity is adhering to the scheduled maintenance, addressing issues promptly, and using quality parts. Long-term durability hinges on rust prevention. Early G-Wagens were infamous for rust. The later models are better but still need protection. The leather and interior trim tend to hold up well. The drivetrain is generally robust, but the suspension system and various electrical components can require more frequent attention. Proper care can yield many years of reliable service, but neglecting maintenance will shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes equipped with a COMAND infotainment system featuring a 7-inch display, navigation, and a rearview camera. Standard entertainment features include a Harman Kardon Logic7 surround-sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but include blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors.
Safety features comprise antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags. Optional features included upgraded leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and various trim customization options. The 2015 G-Class hasn't been specifically crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA. Crash-test ratings are not available for this particular model year, likely due to its low sales volume and unique design. The boxy shape is known for its strong frame. Keep in mind that the tech features are rather dated compared to newer SUVs, but the G-Class emphasizes ruggedness and luxury over advanced technology. The focus leans towards durability and off-road capability rather than having the most cutting-edge digital features.

2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G550 started around $116,000 when new, while the G63 AMG commanded prices exceeding $140,000. Used market prices in 2024 typically range from $60,000 to $90,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The G-Class holds its value relatively well due to its iconic status and limited production. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and any modifications made to the vehicle. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices. The G-Wagen's unique image prevents it from depreciating as much as other luxury SUVs.

2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its value and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, resulting in significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, given the vehicle's complexity and the cost of parts. Expect to pay a premium for specialized service. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial, especially if unexpected repairs arise. This vehicle is far from economical, and owners should be prepared for considerable expenses.

2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class competes with luxury SUVs like the Land Rover Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, and Lexus LX 570. In terms of off-road performance, the G-Class and Range Rover are closely matched, with the G-Class having a slight edge due to its more rugged design. The Escalade and LX 570 offer more space and comfort but are less capable off-road. Feature-wise, the G-Class lags behind newer models of its rivals, which offer more advanced technology. Reliability is comparable across these models, but repair costs for the G-Class can be higher. The G-Class is significantly more expensive than the Escalade and LX 570, and roughly on par with the Range Rover.
Alternatives to the G-Class include the Land Rover Defender (for off-road focus) and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class (for luxury and space). If budget is a major concern, the Lexus LX 570 offers a similar size and features at a lower price point. The G-Class is more about image and off-road capability than practicality. The Range Rover offers more comfort.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a Good Wagon?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is ideal for buyers who prioritize a unique and iconic design, exceptional off-road capability, and are willing to pay a premium for it. It's worth buying if you value its distinctive character and ruggedness over practicality and fuel efficiency. A used G-Class can be a good value, but careful inspection and a thorough service history are essential. Consider the G550 for a balance of performance and comfort, or the G63 AMG if you desire maximum power. Ensure you can afford the high ownership costs before committing to this vehicle. Its appeal is mostly image-driven.

The car with the biggest green factor

Love the car. Love the 5.5 engine, it is not M113 of course, but M273 is also good. I personally prefer 5.5 over 4 turbo. Fun car that always put a green on my face.

Iconic classic, 2015 is best year for G550

2015 G 550 was final year for the naturally aspirated v8 motor which, in my opinion, is preferable to the smaller twin turbo that was introduced in the 2016 G550. After 4 years of combined city/highway driving, and limited off-road driving on unpaved mountain roads in NH, I'm very pleased with this vehicle. I've previously owned Toyota Land Cruiser, 4Runner, and Tacoma which were also great for the mixed city/highway/mountain roads in New England. If you can afford the high cost, you'll likely enjoy the experience of owning a G-wagen.

Killer ride on October 4, 2015

Chiciest car evar

I can not say enough about my new G 550 ! Must say that it is the nicest, sturdiest, most fun, safest, empowering vehicle a person can ever own.It makes you feel like you are invincible.I really do not know if there is any better feeling then feeling invincible. Once you get in the G 550 and you get familiarized with it and take it for a ride for a couple of times you will realize how special these vehicle really is. The sheer power and quickness of the G 550 Mercedes is unmatchabl by any other vehicle from my experience. The best car I have ever had by far!

The car I always wanted

I aways loved the look, style, presence and sound given off by this vehicle. It is so classic and so Mercedes. The vehicle shouts toughness but it is very comfortable. It is fun to drive. People see it and start asking questions and giving complements. Women seem to be as interested as men.
