The Good
The 2012 G-Class offers strong off-road performance and a commanding presence. Its luxurious cabin provides considerable comfort. Emotionally, it appeals to those seeking a unique, status-driven vehicle. Practically, it delivers robust build quality, albeit with compromised fuel efficiency and a high purchase price. Reliability, while not perfect, is generally good for a vehicle in its class. The design is undeniably iconic.
The Bad
The 2012 G-Class suffers from poor fuel economy due to its boxy shape and heavy weight. Handling can be cumbersome on pavement. Maintenance and repair costs are high. Potential buyers should watch for rust, especially on older models. The electronic systems can also be prone to glitches. Inspect the transfer case and differentials for leaks or unusual noises.

What Problems Does the 2012 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Have?
Recalls for the 2012 G-Class have been relatively infrequent, but it's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding safety recalls related to specific VINs. Long-term reliability can be good if the vehicle is properly maintained, but the high cost of parts and labor can make repairs expensive. Earlier model year G-Wagens (pre-2000s) were known for more robust simplicity. The 2012 model, while luxurious, incorporates more complex systems that can be prone to failure over time. Be especially diligent in reviewing the service history and performing a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic specializing in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
How long will the 2012 Mercedes-Benz G-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features could include upgraded leather upholstery, different wheel designs, and various styling enhancements. Some models may feature blind-spot monitoring. While the 2012 G-Class incorporates modern safety technology, its high center of gravity and body-on-frame construction can affect crash test performance compared to modern unibody SUVs. The NHTSA and IIHS may not have specifically crash-tested the 2012 G-Class due to its low production volume and specialized design. However, its robust construction contributes to its perceived safety. Remember that the technology is now over a decade old and may feel dated compared to newer vehicles. Adaptive cruise control was not offered on this model year.

How Does the 2012 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Alternatives depend on priorities. For superior on-road performance and handling, the Porsche Cayenne is a better choice. If luxurious features and a comfortable ride are paramount, the Range Rover or Lexus LX 570 are strong contenders. If reliability is the primary concern, the Lexus LX 570 is generally considered a more dependable option. For pure off-road capability at a lower price point, consider a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, although it lacks the G-Class's luxury.

Mercedes Benz of FIfe- Gold Plated 5 Stars! Was shopping for a pre-owned G550 "Pedigree".... local owner(s) dealer serviced and well cared for. I would check the local Mercedes Benz Dealers inventory daily but the nice ones, always sold immediately. Mercedes-Benz of Fife took one in on trade, a 2012 G550 Black w/Designo. Paid asking price...they completely serviced, detailed and delivered it off the Showroom Floor! What a class act! KUDOS to Cathy Hodges our Sales Associate and Brandon Kindle GM!

A truck for any situationLove my G-wagen. Extremely reliable, gas mileage in the real world isn't as bad as reported. Can absolutely go anywhere. Nice and nimble, fits in normal parking spaces that challenge Ford pickup and Chevy SUV owners. A hand built in Austria military vehicle!!

Good CarGiven the age of the design I guess the G is a good car. Overpriced yes, but nothing beats that growl. The interior is dated and could do with 2012 touches.

G550 OwnerThe Mercedes G series has been on the market since 1979 and from the exterior it has not changed much. These vehicles are hand made in Graz Austria and you can tell from the quality of the interior. The attention to detail is astounding, better than any Range Rover I have ever been in. The handling is typical of a vehicle with this kind of height but I think putting it in the Cons category is unfair, I conquered the twisty mountain roads of Colorado with no drama. Owning a car like this is an experience, it is by no means a family car. There is no power lift gate, the rear seats are so high you need a step stool to get in, the front seats are narrow and not very supportive, the doors are so heavy that no 10 year old could ever open or close them, the actual vehicle height restricts what parking structures you can get into, and the ride is comfortable but by no means in the same league as a Range Rover. With all that said you might be wondering why I rated this car with 5 stars for value or why I even bought it in the first place. The answer is simple, I love it, and I appreciate every stitch that someones hand put in the leather. I appreciate its uniqueness and quirks and for that; for me it's worth every penny.
