Rating: 5.00
Based on 10 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The Volvo XC90, a mid-size luxury SUV, has been a cornerstone of Volvo's lineup since its introduction in 2002. The 2022 model year continues this legacy. It's a 3-row SUV, available in trims like Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. The pricing range typically spans from around $50,000 to $70,000 depending on the configuration and options. It stands out for its elegant Scandinavian design, comfortable ride, and emphasis on safety, making it a popular choice for families.
The Good

The 2022 Volvo XC90 offers a blend of luxury and practicality. Its refined Scandinavian design and comfortable interior appeal to emotional buyers, while its safety features and available fuel-efficient powertrains attract practical buyers. Performance is adequate, reliability is generally good, and it offers a compelling value proposition in its segment.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Volvo XC90 include the sometimes-complex infotainment system, which can be distracting to operate while driving. Some reviewers have noted that the base engine can feel strained when fully loaded. The third-row seating is best suited for children, and repair costs can be higher compared to non-luxury SUVs.

What Problems Does the 2022 Volvo XC90 Have?

While the 2022 Volvo XC90 is generally considered reliable, some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches, slow response times, and connectivity problems. Some also report issues with the mild hybrid system. There have been some recalls, so it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any open recalls specific to the VIN of the vehicle you are considering. Long-term reliability concerns sometimes revolve around the complexity of the engine and electrical systems. Earlier model years (2016-2018) of the second-generation XC90 had more reported issues, particularly related to the infotainment system and air suspension. The 2022 model year benefits from improvements and updates, but it's still wise to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic, especially one familiar with Volvo vehicles. Regular maintenance, following the recommended service schedule, is crucial to mitigating potential long-term reliability issues. Check online owner forums and reviews for more specific issues reported by other 2022 XC90 owners.

How long will the 2022 Volvo XC90 last?

With diligent maintenance, the 2022 Volvo XC90 can provide well over 150,000 miles or 10+ years of service. Consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule are critical. Potential long-term weaknesses often involve the complex electronics and infotainment system, as well as potential issues with the mild-hybrid system over time. The air suspension (if equipped) can also be a source of expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance can help mitigate these issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is packed with technology. The centerpiece is the 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, which integrates navigation, audio controls, climate settings, and vehicle functions. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Optional features include adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist (semi-autonomous driving), a head-up display, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and park assist pilot.

Entertainment options include a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Safety is a Volvo hallmark, and the XC90 excels in this area. It typically receives top marks in crash tests from both the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA. Features like whiplash protection, side impact protection, and a strong safety cage contribute to its excellent safety ratings. The Pilot Assist system, while advanced, requires driver attention and is not a fully autonomous driving system. The digital driver display is customizable and provides key vehicle information. The optional air suspension enhances ride comfort and can be adjusted for different driving conditions.

2022 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Volvo XC90 had a starting MSRP of around $50,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $70,000+ with options. Current used market prices range depending on mileage, condition, and trim level, but typically fall between $35,000 and $60,000. Depreciation is moderate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, trim level (Inscription models tend to hold their value better), and the presence of desirable options like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system or Pilot Assist.

2022 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

The Volvo XC90 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are typical for a luxury SUV. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice; the T8 plug-in hybrid offers the best fuel economy, while the B5 and B6 are less economical. Maintenance can be more expensive than non-luxury vehicles, and repairs, particularly for complex systems like the infotainment or air suspension, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs should be factored into the purchase decision.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 competes with other mid-size luxury SUVs like the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Lexus RX. In terms of performance, the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE offer more powerful engine options. The Acura MDX is known for its reliability and value. The Audi Q7 provides a similar blend of luxury and technology. The Lexus RX prioritizes comfort and a smooth ride.

The XC90 stands out for its Scandinavian design and emphasis on safety. Its infotainment system is a point of contention, as some find it less intuitive than those in the BMW or Audi. Reliability is generally good, but the Acura MDX and Lexus RX have a slight edge. Price-wise, the XC90 is competitive.

Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX for its reliability and value, the BMW X5 for its performance, and the Audi Q7 for its technology. If prioritizing fuel efficiency, the Lexus RX hybrid is a good choice. If a plush ride is desired, perhaps consider the Lincoln Aviator.

For buyers prioritizing safety, design and distinctiveness, the XC90 makes a very strong case. The X5 and GLE are more fun to drive, while the Lexus and Acura are easier to live with day to day.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Volvo XC90 a Good Vehicle?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is ideal for families seeking a stylish, safe, and comfortable three-row SUV. It's worth buying if you appreciate Scandinavian design, prioritize safety features, and don't require the absolute best performance in its class. A used 2022 XC90 can offer good value, especially if it has a comprehensive service history and a clean bill of health from a pre-purchase inspection. The Inscription trim offers the most luxurious experience, while the R-Design provides a sportier aesthetic. Consider the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid if fuel efficiency is a top priority. Thoroughly test the infotainment system during a test drive to ensure it meets your needs. Ultimately, it's a solid choice that excels in design and safety, but requires careful consideration of its potential maintenance costs and infotainment quirks.

Volvo XC90 and I got it all!

I truly can not say enough good things about my new 2022 Volvo XC90 T6. I have admired the Volvo SUVs from afar as a minivan mom for 15 years and this was my year to make the move. No turning back; it is sporty, classy, comfortable, safe, I could go on forever. Classic black and dark brown interior. The info center takes a bit to get used to and it seems like there are features everywhere so definitely just hop on you tube to figure them all out at your own pace because the sales person will tell you, but no way you can get them all down. One of my ultimate favorites are the rotating fog lights. As you turn the lights turn with your vehicle. Lane assist is not for me; I've been driving too long to have it as it seems overbearing. 360 camera and all of the warnings are great though because you never know who is barreling down through the parking lot. Narrowed it to the 2023 Honda Pilot and 2022 MDX Technology; got tired of waiting on the Pilot and frankly it was a bit too big and the MDX just didn't have the sporty look I wanted. I feel like with the Volvo I got it all!

Amazing!!

We were looking for a luxury SUV that handled well and looked great. This was the best SUV that we ever purchased! It is high off the ground and handles well on the highway and in the city. Torque and hp are excellent and the car is whisper quiet on the road. The interior is very luxurious and the leather is soft and comfortable.
