The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class, now known as the GLE-Class since 2016, is a mid-size luxury SUV that represented Mercedes-Benz's commitment to comfort and capability. Produced from 1997 to 2015 (as the M-Class), its body style remained a classic SUV form factor. Key trims included the ML350, ML400, ML550, and the high-performance ML63 AMG. Pricing ranged approximately from $50,000 to over $100,000 depending on the trim and options when new. It stood out due to its blend of luxury, performance, and Mercedes-Benz's reputation for quality.
The Good

The 2015 M-Class offers strong performance, especially in the higher trims, and renowned Mercedes-Benz comfort. Its design exudes sophistication. For practical buyers, it boasts a spacious interior and available all-wheel drive. Emotional buyers appreciate the prestige of the brand and the thrill of the powerful engine options. Reliability is generally good with proper maintenance.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 M-Class include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury SUVs. Some owners have reported issues with the air suspension system and electronic components. It's crucial to check for oil leaks and transmission issues during inspection. Fuel economy isn't the best, particularly with the V8 engines.

What Problems Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class often revolve around the air suspension system, which can experience leaks and compressor failures, leading to costly repairs. Electronic glitches, such as issues with the COMAND system or sensor malfunctions, are also noted. Oil leaks, particularly around the engine and transmission, are worth investigating during pre-purchase inspections.

Recalls for the 2015 M-Class have addressed issues such as potential fuel filter flange leaks, which could increase the risk of a fire. Owners should verify that all applicable recall repairs have been performed. Long-term reliability concerns often focus on the longevity of the turbochargers in the ML400, ML550, and ML63 AMG models, as well as the potential for increased maintenance needs as the vehicle ages. Some owners have reported issues with the transfer case. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigating these risks. Specifically, checking for coolant leaks and addressing them promptly is advised to avoid more significant engine problems down the line.

How long will the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10+ years of service. Long-term durability hinges on diligent maintenance habits, including adhering to the recommended service schedule and addressing minor issues promptly.

Weaknesses over time often include the aforementioned air suspension problems, potential for increased oil consumption, and wear and tear on interior components. Models with forced induction (turbochargers) may require more specialized attention. Proper care can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Colorado ML350 4matic
I first learned about the ML350 4matic from a best friend who purchased one back in 2009. He had returned from Iraq and bought one used his first day back in the U.S. He still has that car and it has 325K miles on it and it's running great still. That completely sold me on their reliability (at least for the gasoline engine, not the bluetec diesal). I've met several other ML owners who've experienced the exact same thing with their cars well over 200K and running strong. It's like an inside secret that they're one of the most durable SUV's ever made. Besides being extremely reliable (haven't had even a single issue go wrong), this car is a complete joy to drive everywhere (highway/city) in ANY kind of weather. I live in Denver and travel up to our mountains regularly, and this handles ice, snow, DEEP snow like it was nothing. It makes driving on icy snow-packed roads actually fun due to the confidence it inspires with it's AWD. In short, this is truly one of the best SUVs ever made by ANY manufacturer, and I've driven them all. I can't give it enough praise as it just does everything exceptionally well.

Second year driving this car (Bluetec) Constant putting me into limp mode due to EGR valve issue. I absolutely regret the day I bought this and if I could light it up knowing I can’t loose on it, I would do it. Very slow in city and feels very heavy. Tailgate won’t open automatically anymore amongst several things like driver sun visor broken, middle console opener broken. Absolute garbage do not recommend this for anyone, they discontinued this because of all the issue they had with this engine, they even had a lawsuit against Mercedes about the emission.

Luxurious comfort, excellent handling, quick to the touch & a quiet ride! Loved the heated and ventilated seats. Panoramic moonroof is a spoiler and key to the cars design and look. Excellent family or commute driver. Super safe & drives like a dream!

We purchased the ML250 Blutec new from the dealer and really enjoyed the vehicle until recently. For the first 50k miles, we had zero issues. The car drove well, had great gas mileage, and surprising power for a 4 cylinder diesel. However, at 50,050 miles (seriously!) on a road trip we started getting AdBlue warnings that we only had "6 starts until vehicle shutdown". We took it to a dealer and our AdBlue sensor had to be replaced. Since we were so close to warranty period, the dealer only charged us $250 to do this. It would have been well over $1,000 normally. The car did great for the next year or so and we thought it was just fluke issue. Then around 65k miles, the vehicle started getting very loud around 50 mph. It continued to get progressively louder and we had the dealership check it out at our 70k service. They informed us that the rear differential had to be replaced and it would cost us over $5000! So we have had 2 major failures between 50k and 70k miles. Now we are left with a difficult decision. Pay to fix the current issue and cross our fingers that we don't have another major failure soon, or cut our losses now. I definitely would not recommend a Mercedes SUV based on our experience to date.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class boasts a respectable array of built-in tech and safety features. Standard tech includes the COMAND infotainment system with a central display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment features include a standard audio system with CD player, HD Radio, and USB input. Driver-assistance features included standard Collision Prevention Assist and available options like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and parking sensors.

Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Optional safety enhancements include a surround-view camera system and active parking assist. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were generally positive. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in most categories. It’s important to check specific crash test results for this model year.

The COMAND system, while functional, can feel somewhat dated compared to newer infotainment systems. The availability of features varied depending on the trim level and optional packages selected by the original owner. The mbrace telematics system provides access to emergency assistance and remote vehicle functions.

2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ranged from approximately $50,000 for the base ML350 to over $100,000 for a fully-equipped ML63 AMG. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The M-Class has experienced significant depreciation, as is typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the desirability of specific trims (the AMG models hold their value better). Higher mileage examples or those with accident history will command lower prices.

2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and potential repair costs. Fuel costs, especially for V8 models, can be significant. Maintenance and repair expenses are also elevated compared to non-luxury SUVs, with specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs should be carefully considered, factoring in potential repairs to systems like the air suspension and electronics. It is not an economical vehicle in terms of overall ownership.

2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class competed with rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Lexus RX, and Acura MDX. In terms of performance, the ML63 AMG was a standout, rivaling the BMW X5 M. The X5 generally offered a sportier driving experience, while the Q7 provided a more spacious third-row option (which the M-Class lacked). The Lexus RX excelled in reliability, often surpassing the M-Class in long-term ownership costs. The Acura MDX offered a more value-oriented package with a spacious interior and competitive features at a lower price point.

Features-wise, the M-Class was competitive, but some rivals offered more advanced tech at the time. Regarding price, the Lexus RX and Acura MDX were typically more affordable. A similar or potentially better alternative could be the Lexus RX for buyers prioritizing reliability and lower ownership costs. For those seeking a sportier driving experience, the BMW X5 would be a better choice, though potentially at the cost of higher maintenance. The Acura MDX presents a strong value proposition with a spacious interior and many features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and capable mid-size SUV with a prestigious badge. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if you appreciate Mercedes-Benz engineering and are prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. The ML350 offers a good balance of performance and economy, while the ML63 AMG caters to those craving high performance. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential. It is not recommended for budget-conscious buyers or those prioritizing long-term reliability above all else. Consider models with a documented maintenance history.

I'd buy it again

We looked for a smaller replacement for our 2000 Navigator (16 years and 234,000 miles) and finally chose a 2015 ML350. This is by far the best car we've owned in our 60+ years of existence. COmfortable, decent mileage, all the bells & whistles we need and the perfect size. Quick to freeway speed, cruises well at 80. Not looking to replace this one for a while. One caveat - maintenance is not cheap.

A fabulous Mercedes in tip-top shape!

The ML350 is a mid-size SUV with all the comforts one would expect of Mercedes. The upgrades make it an exceptional value for its price. This particular unit has Navigation, rear (and 360-degree) cameras, back up sensors and a whole lot more including a tow hitch!
