Practically, it provides decent performance from its V6 or V8 engines and respectable build quality. While not the most fuel-efficient, its reliability is generally good with proper maintenance. Analysis
What Problems Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?
- Electrical Problems: Issues with the sunroof, power windows, and other electrical components are common. Faulty wiring and sensor failures are often the cause.
- Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported transmission slipping or rough shifting, potentially leading to costly repairs. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial.
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and rear main seal, are a recurring problem.
- Suspension Issues: The suspension components, including the air suspension on some models, can wear out, leading to a rough ride and expensive repairs.
- Rust: Rust can be a problem, especially in areas where road salt is used. Check the undercarriage, wheel wells, and door bottoms for rust.
- Engine Issues: While the engines are generally reliable, some owners have reported issues with the mass airflow sensor and oxygen sensors.
Recalls were issued for some M-Class models, so it's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the aging electrical and mechanical systems, as well as the potential for rust. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns. Early model years of the W163 (pre-2002) had more significant quality control issues, which were largely addressed by 2005, but some lingering problems persisted.
How long will the 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Entertainment:
The standard audio system provided good sound quality. The optional navigation system was a basic, screen-based system. There was no support for modern smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Driver-Assistance:
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Cruise control was standard, but features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control were not available.
Safety Features:
Standard safety features included antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), front airbags, and side airbags. The M-Class also featured a robust safety cage designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision.
Crash-Test Ratings:
The 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class received good crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, it's important to note that crash-test standards have become more stringent since 2005.
Overall, while the 2005 M-Class offered a reasonable level of technology and safety for its time, it lacks many of the advanced features found in modern vehicles. Its strengths were in its build quality and safety features, but its technology is now dated.

How Does the 2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Wagon?
Regarding features, the M-Class offered a similar level of luxury to its competitors, but its technology was not always the most advanced. In terms of price, the M-Class was positioned similarly to the BMW X5 and Acura MDX, but more expensive than some other competitors.
As alternatives, the Lexus RX 330 offers superior reliability and lower running costs, making it a practical choice. The Acura MDX provides more space and family-friendly features. The BMW X5 offers a sportier driving experience. If reliability and lower running costs are priorities, the Lexus RX 330 is a better alternative. If a sportier driving experience is desired, the BMW X5 is a good choice. For those needing more space, the Acura MDX is worth considering. The M-Class holds its own in terms of prestige and luxury feel, but its higher maintenance costs are a drawback.

ML 500 is so niceI just baught a 2005 ML500 from a gambling buddy of mine for 700 dollars. It needed a egr valve and a spark plug change. They were the original plugs from the factory.Got everything replaced for 800 dollar s. I've never owned a Mercedes in my life. This car is so awesome, my wife and I are totally in love with it.I can say it's the best car we have ever owned, I'm never getting rid of it. Once again Mercedes has the best cars in the world. Thank you.. Lyn Field

MERCEDES-BENZ ML500They don't make them like this anymore. Mine is 228664 miles. I got it when it had 60k. The only problems that were major over the years was my steering rack had to be manufacturer replaced (warrantied) 2011 and my transmission module somehow got flooded with transmission fluid and went bad 2013. Other than that this thing is a beast. Probably the best vehicle I've ever owned.

Most comfortable heated leather seats for bad baIm so used to it, but my kids say it has blind spots? My son says it has amazing pick up, I love the leather heated seats!!@ my back feels great while even driving on a long trip. It feels heavy/solid car. Runs great! Never had any major problems with it, besides new battery new alternator etc. Very nice smooth drive too and great in the snow all wheel drive. It has original stereo with a cassette and the sound is awsomee!! The back doors get stuck and I can't open one of them? The front seat blows fuse if anyone over 200 pounds drives and adjusts the seat. The heat knobs are hard to turn when your fingers have ARTHRITIS. The cup holders are great, one by driver one by passenger one in middle, 2 in backseat center above an ash tray. If you drop anything between the seats it's gone forever, like the Bumuda triangle. I bought as seen on tv things that go in between seats to catch anything works perfectly.

One the best SUV`s made on a real chassis. Many people do not even realize that this is built on a chassis, and it is not a Unibody vehicle.Still,, overall quality is very good. I bought mine used, about two and a half yrs old, changed under the warranty the ball joints, two of them only, out of four.Excellent transmission. If anyone is buying a Merc. research the tranny type, if it starts with 722 (if I am not mistaken), it is made in house by merc. and it is really the best tranny you can get,REALLY. Super smart shifting of the gears by computer, etc.etc.Excellent power, a little thirsty on fuel, but, hey , if you buy a Merc. you got money for fuel, right? My next one it is going to be a ML Diesel. They last forever, and performancewise the same as gas vehicles.Interior design the best from the same yr. production, compared to BMW and Porsche. The rear seat in the Bimmer looks like a Russian Lada. The Porsche dash looks cheap to me. The merc`s dash is very thoughtfully designed, although I have to say I find the bimmer better looking on the exterior. The porsche`s exterior design is weird to me, but excellent otherwise. Anyway , this is my second merc. the first one was a 190E 2.3 gas, and it lasted 530 000 kms, I could have kept it longer, but wanted smth. newer.Ml`s winter performance gets 15 out of 10 points in my review, -:) , super excellent, the 4 wheel drive-excellent.God and the Germans made this SUV for Canada. So far I am very happy with it.People,, do not delay, go out and buy one today. Thank-You and happy motoring.
