What Problems Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is known to have several frequently reported problems. Electrical issues are common, including problems with the instrument cluster, power windows, and central locking system. The air suspension (Airmatic), if equipped, is prone to leaks and compressor failures, leading to expensive repairs. Oil leaks, particularly from the engine and transmission, are another common concern. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported.

While the 2006 model year itself didn't have a substantial number of recalls, it's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls performed by Mercedes-Benz. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The engine and transmission, while generally robust, can develop issues over time, especially if maintenance is neglected. Rust can also be a problem in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating these issues.

How long will the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class last?

A 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class, with proper maintenance, can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15-20 years. However, reaching these milestones depends heavily on consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Long-term durability is generally good for the engine and transmission if serviced correctly, but as mentioned before, the air suspension, electrical components, and seals are common weak points. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan and increase repair costs. Keeping up with fluid changes, addressing leaks promptly, and replacing worn suspension components are essential.
Positive Owner Reviews

This is a well cared for used Mercedes ML350. While the paint displayed some of the effects of Hawaii sun, Autosource took the time and care to repaint the hood. Everything ine would expect from a Mercedes is still in this vehicle and should serve any new owner well for the length of time they desire to own it.
thomas
Very comfortable, versatile vehicle. Great in the city for daily driving, super comfortable on long trips with peace of mind if you need 4 wheel drive.
Edrees
Plenty of leg room, very spacious and good for long rides. Most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Good gas mileage as well. Best car I’ve ever owned.
Negative Owner Reviews
MikeB
Bought it used with 75,000 miles. After 4 years and 110,000 miles dumped it. Constant failures and check engine light illuminating. Replaced battery, rear hatch mech, intake manifold, spark plugs, serious transmission liability. Check for balance shaft issue. You will spend a lot of money to keep this car running... one problem after another. The best or nothing.... nothing is a better than the liability of owning this car.

I only own this ML350 2006 for 9 month broke down 4 time sevice dept is very poor not finish on time I have to call to check on them
John
9 months and three major problems. Power tailgate Command system tires are worn off at 5500 km Local service in Newfoundland is extremely poor. While talking to them at times it is even scary who this thing is working. Emailed MB of Canada but eight days and countong for a meaningful response. I wish I had not bought it

Standard features included a premium audio system with a CD player, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-adjustable front seats. Optional tech included a navigation system, upgraded Harman Kardon sound system, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

NHTSA ratings can vary, but generally, it received four or five stars for frontal and side crash protection. It's always best to consult the specific NHTSA and IIHS reports for detailed information. 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ranged from approximately $41,000 for the ML350 to upwards of $87,000 for the ML63 AMG. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find models ranging from $4,000 to $12,000.

The M-Class has depreciated significantly since its original price. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust and mechanical issues), service history, and the presence of desirable options like the navigation system or premium sound system. Higher mileage examples or those with deferred maintenance will fetch significantly lower prices.

2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly for specialized components like the air suspension and electrical systems. Routine maintenance, while crucial, is often more expensive than for non-luxury vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential for long-term ownership.

How Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class competed with other luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5, Acura MDX, Lexus RX, and Volvo XC90. In terms of performance, the M-Class offered a range of engines to compete, with the ML63 AMG being a standout performer. The BMW X5 often offered a sportier driving experience, while the Lexus RX was known for its reliability. The Acura MDX provided a good balance of features, reliability, and value.

Aim for models with a comprehensive service history. Avoid examples with air suspension issues or signs of neglect. A mechanically sound ML350 might offer the best balance of performance and reliability. Be prepared to budget for potential repairs.

everuthing breaks

Comfortable, cute, quick, luxury, great visibility, just the right size, but everything breaks. Major replacements of nearly all driving components at major cost. Water pump, main spring, tie rods, transmission, bearings, brakes—you name it. Oh, and major body rust. My last ML had the same issues. Mercedes is slipping badly.

A shame for MB brand

The car is designed perfectly to by driven in big city or cross state trips ( did a trip Chicago - to Niagara falls ) easy to control . High quality for the interior and this is all ! After the car get to 100k things start to fall a part : leak from steering pump, water pump, torque converter on the transmission ($3600 job) , alternator, belts, leak from engine seals , tail light bulbs get loose and work when they want . Big problem is the conductor plate on the Transmisions we did this too $2000-$2500 job . Over all stay away from this car 2006- 2011 Ml -350 it’s not reliable at all and its pricy to repair . For now my family decided to stay away from MB until the company starts to make better cars again .

Not a bad used car purchase

Bought this vehicle so we can be comfortable while traveling and for light towing duties. We have been very pleased with the way its been holding up. It has almost 83K on it and have had to replace the intake manifold, brakes, power steering fluid reservoir and ignition coils. Its been very comfortable and reliable for the time we've owned it.

Class Action Lawsuit over the motor of this car

This is a gamble. If you get one of the cars with the motor problem, you are in for literally thousands of dollars of repairs. When it does run, I love it, but the motor problems make this car dangerous to drive. Do not buy this car.

Very expensive maintenance

I spent so much money keeping this truck running. Had to get rid of it. I will stick to Honda’s and Toyota’s from now on
