The Good
The 2009 M-Class offers a comfortable and luxurious ride, appealing to emotional buyers seeking prestige. Its powerful engine options deliver satisfying performance. For practical buyers, it provides decent cargo space and available all-wheel drive for added security. While reliability can be a concern, a well-maintained model offers a solid ownership experience. The design is classic Mercedes-Benz SUV.
The Bad
The 2009 M-Class is known for potential issues with the air suspension system (if equipped), which can be expensive to repair. Oil leaks, particularly from the engine and transmission, are also common concerns. Electrical gremlins and issues with the transfer case in AWD models can occur. What Problems Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?
Specific to the 2009 model year, some owners have reported issues with the transfer case in 4MATIC (AWD) models, leading to noise and vibration. The fuel level sending unit can also fail, causing inaccurate fuel gauge readings.
Recalls for the 2009 M-Class have addressed issues such as potential fuel filter leaks and problems with the brake booster vacuum line, which could affect braking performance. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the aging electrical components and the potential for corrosion in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance and addressing problems promptly are crucial to mitigating these issues and ensuring a longer lifespan for the vehicle.
Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the vehicle's service history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
How long will the 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included standard cruise control and optional Parktronic parking sensors. Safety features were more comprehensive, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags.
Optional safety features included blind-spot monitoring. Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are generally good, with the M-Class earning "Good" ratings in most categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also awarded the M-Class favorable safety ratings. The 2009 M-Class offered a solid level of safety for its era, but lacks the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) found in newer vehicles, such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

How Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of price, the used M-Class can be attractive, but the potential for costly repairs makes it a risk. The Acura MDX offers a similar level of practicality and features with better reliability and lower ownership costs, making it a potentially better alternative. The BMW X5 provides a sportier driving experience, but also shares similar reliability concerns. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus RX or Acura MDX are generally better choices. If you're looking for a similar blend of luxury and performance but are willing to accept potential maintenance costs, the M-Class could be considered, especially if you find a well-maintained example at a good price. However, buyers should thoroughly research its history and consider a pre-purchase inspection.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

Solid as a rock - but a lot more comfortableI've owned this truck/SUV for over 5 years now and spent 2 years trying to find one. I will replace it with a newer version shortly so I can add a factory towing hitch package. The diesel engine is tremendously strong (torque) and a lot more fuel efficient that the comparable gasoline engine. I've personally put almost 74,000 miles on it with negligible problems.

Favorite Car everThis diesel SUV is my favorite car ever..... it's a shame they have all that pollution stuff on it, that's the cause of problems I've had... that said I love driving it and hope it's my forever car.

Great performance, reliability, looksLoved owning this car. Great in ice and snow, lots of room, looks beautiful. Great technology, comfortable seats, and some decent off-roading capability. Love the wood inserts and black leather. With tinted windows and the stock 20" rims is eye catching, even when 5+ years old. Would buy another one of these in a minute!
