The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a luxury SUV that blends comfort, performance, and practicality. Part of the third generation (W166), it offered a refined driving experience. Key trims included the ML350, ML550, and ML63 AMG. Pricing ranged from approximately $48,000 to over $100,000 depending on the trim and options when new. Its luxurious interior, advanced technology, and Mercedes-Benz prestige made it a popular choice in the mid-size luxury SUV segment.
The Good

The 2014 M-Class offers strong performance and a comfortable ride, appealing to emotional buyers seeking luxury and a prestigious badge. Practical buyers appreciate the spacious cabin, available technology, and respectable fuel efficiency for its class. While not the most reliable, it provides a premium driving experience and a sense of security.

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class can include issues with the air suspension system (Airmatic), particularly on models equipped with it. This can lead to sagging or failure of the suspension components. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the COMAND system, have also been reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the fuel system, including fuel pump failures.

Recalls for the 2014 M-Class have addressed concerns such as potential fuel leaks, issues with the brake booster, and problems with the seat belt pre-tensioners. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the maintenance of complex systems. The diesel engine (ML250 BlueTEC) can be prone to issues related to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other emissions components. Oil leaks, particularly from the engine and transmission, can also occur as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can help mitigate these concerns. Some model years prior to 2014 had issues with the balance shaft, so checking the history of the specific vehicle is crucial. Overall, regular servicing at qualified repair facilities is important for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service often depend on driving habits and timely repairs. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly are vital. Weaknesses over time often include wear and tear on suspension components, potential rust in colder climates, and the aforementioned air suspension failures. Electrical gremlins can also become more prevalent as the car ages. Consistent upkeep is key to maximizing its lifespan.

2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class started around $48,000 for the ML350 and could exceed $100,000 for a fully equipped ML63 AMG. Current used market prices range from approximately $15,000 to $30,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Depreciation is significant for luxury vehicles, but the Mercedes-Benz badge holds some value. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the Premium or Sport packages. Lower mileage, a clean title, and a complete service record command higher prices.

2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, but even the ML350 isn't exceptionally fuel-efficient. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially for specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated budget for upkeep. Regular servicing is key to avoiding expensive repairs down the line.

2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class competes with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Lexus RX 350, and Acura MDX. In terms of performance, the M-Class offers a range of engine options comparable to the X5 and Q7, especially with the AMG variant. Feature-wise, it matches its German rivals, offering similar levels of luxury and technology. However, the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX generally outperform the M-Class in reliability ratings. The RX 350 also offers a more comfortable ride, while the MDX provides better value for the price.

Price-wise, the M-Class sits in the middle of the pack, being more expensive than the Acura MDX but potentially more affordable than a similarly equipped BMW X5. A good alternative might be the Lexus RX 350 for those prioritizing reliability and a smooth ride, or the Acura MDX for those seeking a more budget-friendly option with good practicality. The BMW X5 provides a sportier driving experience, but at a potentially higher ownership cost. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxury SUV with a prestigious badge, comfortable ride, and available performance. It's worth buying used if you're comfortable with higher maintenance costs and prioritize the Mercedes-Benz experience. Consider a pre-purchase inspection, especially checking the air suspension and service history. The ML350 offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the ML250 BlueTEC is for those prioritizing fuel efficiency. Avoid high-mileage examples without documented maintenance. A well-maintained, lower-mileage ML350 or ML250 BlueTEC can offer a satisfying luxury SUV experience.

Lot of car for the money$$

Have a 14' ML 550, car was 70K new, this one with 65K miles was 27k pre owned. The vehicle is comfortable, deceivingly fast, and feels solid at highway speeds. I had been with BMW 15 years, but these M Class vehicles are more reliable overall and check more boxes with daily drivability. While BMW is certainly a driver's car, the cost to keep up is more. Tires that last only 25k, brakes @ 30k, oil leaks and so on. Audi Q5 is an inferior vehicle, smaller and has a choppy ride, especially on long trips and has a 4 cyl turbo which is loud, unless you get the SQ5. This is the 3rd M Class we have owned and had great reliability out of them into the 200k mile range. I don't see why this one won't as well. Very good ride on trips, has lane assist, active steering, collision avoidance, side cameras, parking sensors, and many other safety features. The 550 has a 4.7 twin turbo V8 that will run with the best on the road, a real sleeper with performance. Very smooth acceleration. Has a lot of features standard that are up charged on the ML350. These are a little hard to find since 75% that were sold were ML 350 V6 models. No substitute for engine size and power out on the highway. If you can pick one up, you will be satisfied, for sure.
