Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Have?
Recalls have addressed various issues, including potential fuel leaks and brake light switch failures. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for a complete recall history. Long-term reliability is generally considered below average compared to some of its competitors. The cost of parts and labor for repairs can be high, reflecting its luxury brand heritage. The 2002 model year doesn't stand out as significantly better or worse than other years in the first generation, but consistent maintenance is crucial to mitigating potential problems.

How Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Compare to Other Wagon?
Compared to its rivals, the M-Class lagged in reliability. The Lexus RX 300 and Acura MDX were generally more dependable. Feature-wise, the M-Class offered similar luxury amenities, but its technology was becoming dated compared to newer models. Price-wise, used M-Classes are now very affordable, but the long-term ownership costs offset the initial savings.
Alternatives to consider include the Lexus RX 300 for its reliability and comfort or the Acura MDX for its balance of features and value. The BMW X5 offers a sportier driving experience but can be expensive to maintain. Unless you specifically desire the Mercedes-Benz badge and are prepared for potential maintenance, the Lexus or Acura might be better choices.

2002 Ml320 Very reliable.2002 Ml320 Very reliable. I bought it used with 134K, not easy to do as most have already hit 200k , very reliable , especially if you stay on top of it with oil changes. I dropped the transmission fluid and measured how much came out. Put new gasket and filter and fresh ATF full synthetic. It dropped about 3.5 quarts of ATF , so I added 4 quarts. Runs like a dream. My ML500 had too many sensor issues, camshaft, computer issues, ignition issues, and crankshaft sensor issues, other sensors with leaks in high pressure ATF hose etc. This ML320 has been problem free for 15 months and counting. It's about to hit 140K. When I bought it used it had 136k last year. I changed spark plugs and ignition coils. 4x4 Off Road capable, snow ready, all wheel drive. Great on gas, unlike ML500 same year, wow , ate gas like crazy. Very happy with this beast in black. Best SUV Mercedes ever made. You see plenty of these out there on the road, the ML500 not so much.

Great reliability. I have the ML320 from 2002 withGreat reliability. I have the ML320 from 2002 with 135K and it drives very nice. Powerful engine picks up fast and responds with barely touching the gas pedal. With my ML500 I had a lot of sensor issues. Crankshaft, camshaft sensors etc. This one has no codes stored in the computer. Great on gas in comparison to the ML500 I previously owned. I love this truck.

Solid but... it's a Mer$edesI've known this car for 18 years. It's been a solid ride, and now I own it. Power everything, and I really like having heated seats in the winter. Its infinite position seats are also nice, plus it remembers my settings. I was able to use it as a camp vehicle, sleeping in the back. At one point around a 125000 miles, things started happening to it...various leaks and an overheating problem. The radio became sporadic, and it's navigation system was antiquated. Some people would say it was time to buy a new vehicle, but I decided to fix it instead. While doing that brought it back up to speed, it was not cheap. All told, I put in a little over 6k into it. Still, I love how solid it feels. It's a little tank. I feel safe in it, I feel it will go anywhere and get me out of any scrapes. That being said, I'm not enamored with its gas mileage (19 mpg), and...while its recent repairs will keep it going for quite some time, I am positive that future repairs after that will be pricey, so for that reason I would not recommend this particular SUV to a friend. Maybe one with lower miles, and ONLY if that friend likes the idea of driving a Mercedes. My next vehicle will be a hybrid or electric.

Reliable, sporty, sleak and clean SUVSUV is comfortable, roomy and handles NJ roads very well. Pioneer in-dash navigation system with Bluetooth is great. Everything you need for a low cost SUV to get to take trips, commute to and from work and run errands. Mercedes engineering is apparent throughout.
