The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty coupe and convertible known for its sleek styling and affordable price point. Part of the fourth generation (2006-2012), it offered a distinctive design compared to its rivals. Key trims included the GS, GT, and GT-P. New, the pricing ranged from around $19,000 to $27,000. Its aggressive stance and available V6 engine made it a popular choice for those seeking a stylish and relatively quick car without breaking the bank.
The Good

The 2007 Eclipse boasts a head-turning design that appeals to emotional buyers. The GT trim delivers decent performance with its V6 engine. For practical buyers, it offered a relatively affordable price and acceptable fuel economy (depending on the engine). While not the most reliable car, it's generally easy to work on and parts are readily available.

The Bad

Common issues with the 2007 Eclipse include potential transmission problems (especially with the automatic), electrical glitches, and premature wear of interior components. Rust can be a concern in certain climates. The rear visibility is also limited due to the car's design. Be sure to inspect the vehicle thoroughly before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse, like other models from this generation, has been reported to have several common issues. One frequent concern revolves around the automatic transmission, with reports of slipping, hard shifting, and even complete failure. Electrical problems are also relatively common, including issues with the power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system.
Another area of concern is the car's interior. Owners have reported premature wear and tear of the seats, dashboard, and door panels. Rust can also be a problem, especially in areas with harsh winters or salty roads. The exhaust system can also be prone to rust and leaks.
Recalls have been issued for various Eclipse models, so it's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the issues mentioned above. Regular maintenance is crucial to keep the car running smoothly, but even with proper care, some problems may still arise. The V6 engine, while offering more power, can also be more prone to issues as it ages. Checking for oil leaks and performing regular tune-ups is vital.

How long will the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, achieving this milestone depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and other essential services can significantly shorten its lifespan.
Long-term durability can be a concern due to the potential for rust, electrical problems, and transmission issues. The interior plastics are also prone to cracking and fading over time. Cars driven in harsh climates or subjected to aggressive driving may experience more problems. Addressing issues promptly and sticking to a strict maintenance schedule are key to maximizing the car's longevity.

Great value! Don’t hesitate to buy it if you can find a clean, well maintained, accident free example. They are relatively fast, not so expensive to maintain and not difficult to work on.

Great car, has an added aux cord. Everything works like it needs to, great for cruising. Feels amazing, in good conditions. No accidents, everything is good.

I have 2 of these. Both are 2011 GT-P's. One is a black Spyder and the other is a rave red coupe. They both handle, drive and accelerate like a dream and can be used for fun or commuting. Mine are kept in pristine condition and get lots of attention as these cars are rare and no longer made. I also had a GS for 10 years and commuted with it for over 125,000 miles at trade in. No problems other than routine maintenance. Very reliable cars that are sporty, practical, attractive and FUN. Rockford Fosgate system is incredible and interior lighting is also super nice. Highly recommend.

I got a 2007 eclipse for my graduation gift from my parents in 2008. I always wanted one. I had it for a total of 7 years. Worst 7 years of my life! I have spent more money on tires for it than I should. The gas mileage stinks too. There was always some odd sounds coming from it. I finally got to trade it in a few months ago. The trade in value wasn't that good but I was ready for it to go!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse offered a relatively basic level of technology for its time. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary audio input. Higher trims like the GT-P featured an upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer. Navigation was not a factory option.
In terms of safety, the Eclipse came standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and front airbags. Side airbags were available as an option on some trims. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not standard on all models, which is a significant omission compared to some of its competitors. Driver-assistance features were virtually non-existent.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) give the 2007 Eclipse 5 stars for driver and passenger in the frontal crash test and 4 stars in the side crash test. These ratings should provide potential buyers some confidence in the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in the event of a collision, although it is always a good idea to consider the age of the testing when compared to modern vehicles. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may also be available, which can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the car's safety performance.

2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse ranged from approximately $19,000 for the base GS model to around $27,000 for the fully equipped GT-P convertible. As expected, the Eclipse has depreciated significantly over the years. Used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.
Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, mileage, service history, and location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and a complete service record command higher prices. Convertibles tend to hold their value slightly better than coupes. The availability of replacement parts and the overall demand for this particular model also influence its resale value.

2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for a sports coupe. Fuel economy is decent with the 4-cylinder engine, but the V6 is less efficient. Maintenance can be affordable if performed regularly and by the owner. Repairs can become expensive if major components fail, such as the transmission. Overall, it's not the most economical choice, but not excessively expensive either.

2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed against vehicles like the Honda Civic Si, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Nissan Altima Coupe. In terms of performance, the Eclipse GT offered decent power from its V6, but the Civic Si was more engaging to drive. The MX-5 offered superior handling. Feature-wise, the Eclipse lagged behind some competitors, lacking advanced technology.
Reliability is where the Eclipse falters compared to the Honda and Mazda. The Altima Coupe offers better practicality, but is less sporty. Price-wise, the Eclipse was often more affordable, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Civic Si for its superior handling and reliability, the Mazda MX-5 Miata for its pure driving experience, and the Nissan Altima Coupe for a blend of sportiness and practicality. If reliability is a major concern, these alternatives would be a better choice. However, if styling and affordability are paramount, the Eclipse remains a contender, especially if found in good condition at a fair price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?

The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for buyers seeking an affordable and stylish sports coupe, prioritizing looks over outright performance and rock-solid reliability. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with a clean title and service history can be a decent purchase, but a neglected one is best avoided. The GT trim offers a better balance of performance and features. It's worth buying if you are aware of potential issues and willing to perform regular maintenance. A thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended before making a purchase.

A reliable sports car that does not cost a fortune

I have this vehicle 5 years, it has been reliable and a very fun ride, I had people tell me on the street that this car is very cool, and it is. It drives better than sport cars in this category and by having lower suspension your turns seem like a straight road

So fun to drive

I live this car, I bought the car because I needed something more reliable but I still wanted something that would catch the eyes of people, so I went and bought this car off of a friend, since then I’ve been wanting to drive it a lot more, recently took it on a long trip to see my family and only used a tank of gas for the round trip, after a while the seat was staring to make me sore but other than that it was great

Reliable, attractive and fun to drive

This was a great convertible to own - manual transmission and fun to drive. Over the 12+ years I have owned it, it rarely needed to go into the shop; it runs great and has decent mpg.
