The Good
The 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse offers a striking design that appeals emotionally. The GT trim provides decent performance with its V6 engine. While not the most reliable, it can be a value pick for those seeking a sporty look on a budget. Comfort is adequate for a sports coupe, and fuel efficiency is reasonable with the 4-cylinder engine.
The Bad
The 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse has known weaknesses including potential transmission issues, especially with the automatic. Electrical problems and premature wear of interior components are also common. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections are crucial.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?
Rust can be a concern, especially in regions with road salt. The undercarriage and body panels are susceptible to corrosion. Engine issues, although less frequent than transmission problems, have been reported, including oil leaks and occasional engine misfires.
While there were recalls on some model years for unrelated issues, the 2006 Eclipse itself didn't have widespread recalls directly addressing these specific mechanical problems. However, checking for any outstanding recalls on the specific VIN is always recommended. Long-term reliability is a concern due to these issues, and preventative maintenance is crucial to prolonging the vehicle's lifespan. Earlier model years of the fourth generation, including 2006, are generally considered to be more prone to these problems compared to later years.
How long will the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?
Long-term durability weaknesses include rust, transmission wear, and electrical failures. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. The interior may also show signs of wear and tear over time.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were minimal, primarily consisting of standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control on some models. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.
Safety features included front airbags and side airbags. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS vary. Some ratings show acceptable performance in frontal and side impacts, while others indicate potential weaknesses in specific areas. It's crucial to review specific crash test results for the 2006 model year from these organizations.
Optional features included a sunroof, leather seats, and an upgraded audio system. Tech features were limited compared to modern vehicles, focusing mainly on basic entertainment and essential safety functions. Overall, the 2006 Eclipse prioritized styling and sporty appeal over cutting-edge technology.

2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value
The Eclipse has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the discontinuation of the model line. Factors affecting resale value include vehicle condition, maintenance history, mileage, and location. Models with lower mileage and well-documented maintenance records will command higher prices. The GT trim with the V6 engine tends to hold slightly more value than the base GS model.

How Does the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?
In terms of features, the Eclipse was generally competitive, offering similar amenities to its rivals. However, reliability was a significant weakness compared to the Honda and Toyota. The Mazda RX-8 offered superior handling but suffered from its own unique reliability problems.
Price-wise, the Eclipse was often more affordable than some competitors, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the lower price came at the cost of potentially higher maintenance and repair bills down the line.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Civic Si for its superior reliability and driving dynamics, the Mazda3 for a more practical and reliable option, or even a newer, used Hyundai Genesis Coupe for more modern features and performance. If styling is the top priority, the Eclipse might still appeal, but potential buyers should be aware of the reliability trade-offs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?
It's not recommended for buyers seeking top-tier reliability or low long-term ownership costs. Consider it a project car or a fun weekend vehicle rather than a dependable daily driver. Be prepared for potential repairs and factor that into the overall cost.

Highly reliable, highly modableThe interior is useless as a family car. Rip the back seats out, and just take the added trunk space. Performance wise, this model of GT is the fastest Eclipse to ever leave the factory, and in the GS form, turbos are easily installed on the 4G69; the big block of the 4G6

I love my car! This car is fun, great looking, fast and everyone loves it. It has a great sound system, sun roof and I have had a great time. I wish it wouldnt get old so I could continue to drive it. I can even haul wood because the back seat folds down! It's a little difficult for kids but honestly not terrible as I have a full sized car seat in it right now. I wish they still made them as I'd buy a new one.

Inexpensive Fun!I bought this as a summer car to save a little money on gas (daily driver has been a full size truck so far) and have something that was fun to drive. I love the manual transmission and the interior styling on the GT looks amazing! I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a fun, affordable sports car.

Most Reliable Car , Sexy, and a load of Fun.I am on my 3rd 4th gen Eclipse. I had a daily driver GS that I miss to this day. 125,000 miles without issue. I now have a GT-P Spyder and a GT-P Coupe. Both cars are eye candy and have plenty of power. These cars are very well balanced in all aspects. I also own a 700 horsepower Corvette and I enjoy the more balanced feel of my GT-P's more most of the time. Opt for the GT is possible. Otherwise mod the GS and it's tons of fun too. My car was the perfect commuter and ate up the snow with snow tires on it. I don't drive my GT-P's in the snow but I'm sure they are just as good. If you want a beautiful and reliable car that is not made from a cookie cutter design, get one of these. Lots of looks, questions and compliments. Especially with a nice set of wheels and a sparkling rave red paint job !
