The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty coupe/convertible that descended from a line of popular sport compact cars. Production years spanned from 1989 to 2011. The 2011 model, one of the last, was available in GS, GS Sport, and GT trims. Known for its distinctive styling and available V6 engine, it offered an appealing blend of aesthetics and performance. The pricing range when new was roughly $19,000 to $28,000.
The Good

The 2011 Eclipse offered a striking design and engaging driving experience (especially with the V6), appealing to emotional buyers. Practical benefits included a relatively affordable price, decent fuel economy with the 4-cylinder, and comfortable front seats, making it a value proposition for some.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2011 Eclipse include subpar rear visibility, a cramped rear seat (especially in the coupe), and below-average cargo space. Reliability can be a concern, so check service records and look for signs of neglect or abuse. Some owners have reported electrical issues.

What Problems Does the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse, and earlier years of this generation, often revolve around electrical issues. These can include problems with the audio system, power windows, and sometimes more significant electrical malfunctions that drain the battery or affect engine performance. Premature wear of brake components has also been noted. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters or heavy road salt use, so inspecting the undercarriage and body panels is crucial.

While recalls specific to the 2011 model may be limited, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or performance. Long-term reliability can be affected by regular maintenance. Neglecting scheduled maintenance can lead to more significant problems down the road. Issues with the automatic transmission have been reported by some owners, particularly with higher mileage vehicles, highlighting the importance of transmission fluid changes according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Engine oil leaks can also develop over time, especially around valve cover gaskets and seals. Therefore, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is always advised before purchasing a used 2011 Eclipse.

How long will the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With good maintenance, a 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or last 10-15 years. However, this is heavily dependent on the previous owner's maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Weaknesses can include electrical issues, rust (depending on location), and potential transmission problems at higher mileages. The V6 engine tends to be more durable than the transmission.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features on the base GS trim included a six-speaker CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack. Higher trims, like the GS Sport and GT, featured an upgraded Rockford Fosgate sound system with more speakers and improved sound quality. Optional features included a navigation system, available on the GT trim.

Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and front-seat side airbags. There were no advanced driver-assistance features available.

Crash test ratings varied. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the Eclipse coupe an overall rating of four out of five stars for frontal crash protection. Rollover resistance was rated at three stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were not readily available for the 2011 model year specifically, but models from similar years received marginal scores in roof strength tests. The Convertible Spyder version would likely have similar or slightly lower crash test ratings due to its open-top design, potentially compromising structural rigidity. It's important to consider these ratings and prioritize safety when evaluating a used Eclipse.

2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse had a starting MSRP of around $19,000 for the base GS coupe, while the GT trim could reach close to $28,000. In today's used market, prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Eclipse has depreciated significantly due to its age, brand perception, and reliability concerns. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition, particularly the GT trim, will command higher resale values. Convertibles may also hold slightly better value, especially in warmer climates.

2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2011 Eclipse are generally moderate, varying based on the driver's history and location. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice; the I4 is more economical. Maintenance can be average, but repairs, especially electrical or transmission-related, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than some competitors due to potential reliability issues and the need for regular maintenance to prevent them, making it potentially less economical than alternatives.

2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed with cars like the Honda Civic Si, Mazda MX-5 Miata (convertible), Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and Scion tC. The Civic Si offered superior handling and reliability. The Miata provided a more engaging convertible experience. The Genesis Coupe delivered more power and a more modern feel.

Compared to the Eclipse, the Scion tC offered similar styling and a more practical hatchback design with better reliability. While the Eclipse GT's V6 offered decent power, its handling wasn't as sharp as the Civic Si or Miata. Features were comparable, but the Eclipse's interior felt dated compared to newer rivals. In terms of price, the Eclipse might be slightly cheaper on the used market, but the potential for higher repair costs could offset those savings.

Alternatives to consider include the aforementioned Honda Civic Si and Scion tC, especially if reliability and practicality are priorities. The Mazda MX-5 is a better choice for a sporty convertible experience. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers a more modern and powerful coupe experience, though it may be more expensive to maintain. The Eclipse stands out mostly for its unique styling, but other options may offer a better overall package.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?

The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for buyers who prioritize styling and affordability over practicality and reliability. It might be worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with low mileage, preferably the GT trim for the V6 engine. A thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential before purchasing. If reliability is a major concern, consider alternatives like the Honda Civic Si or Scion tC. Avoid if you need ample rear passenger space or cargo capacity. It's a budget-friendly sports coupe for those who appreciate its looks and are willing to accept potential maintenance challenges.

Sporty, fits like a glove!

I love the look both outside and inside! For me it has more than enough speed. I can easily go 80 to overtake a vehicle on the freeway, which is plenty enough for me. I'm not on a race track. I'm surprised at how features it has on the inside. I'm thinking of replacing the shocks for a more comfortable ride, but other than that, I'm very satisfied!

Excellent, awesome amazing looking car.

It’s my second eclipse and it’s just too bad they stop making it because I would have continued buying that model. And I’m so offended that they named a SUV Eclipse Cross !!! Come on, that new box has nothing to do or compare to an Eclipse !!! Lack of imagination for finding another name for that SUV box. Come on...

Perfect Cheap Sports Car

Let me start off with my only complaint. I'm six feet tall, and this car is notoriously small. I find it to be very comfortable, but I've always likes a smaller car versus a spacious cabin. It just makes me feel more in tune with the car when everything is closer to me. The backseat would be uncomfortable for any human over the age of 10. Its incredibly small. But that being my only complaint, I'm totally in love with this model. Everything from the exterior design to the performance of the engine. I recommend this car to anyone who's looking for a sports car thrill without the $20,000 price tag that I believe comparable vehicles come with. Worth every single penny. I'm dreading the day I'll have to move on to a different car. ALSO I live in Chicago weather so I needed something that could handle well with all the snow. This car has a wide axel and my GT (V6) model weighs about 3,600lbs which is plenty to make the handling in snow (in my opinion) a dream. It's a small car, but it won't be sliding around all winter. Also it's a FWD sports car. Love it.

Best Car I Ever Owned

This is my 3rd 4th gen Eclipse and I absolutely love it. These cars make you feel like a million bucks when you drive them. They are unique, sporty, and quick. My first Eclipse was an 06 GS that I used everyday for 10 years with only minor maintenance. I traded for a beautiful Outlander Sport GT. My other two Eclipses are both 11' GT-P's. One is a Spyder and the one I just purchased is a coupe. These cars are awesome. This GT-P coupe has all available options and is a blast to drive. The Rockford Fosgate system is amazing, as usual. Love the sunroof, the color (rave red), leather interior racing-type seats, dual exhaust, fog lights, HID's, and the rear wing spoiler. There is so much to like about this car. It is simple, practical, comfortable and fast. These aren't manufactured anymore, so if you can find a nice one get it. You won't be disappointed.
