The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty coupe/convertible that emerged as part of the third generation (2000-2005). Known for its sleek, futuristic design, it offered a blend of style and performance. Key trims included the RS, GS, GT, and GTS. New, prices ranged from approximately $17,000 to $25,000. Its visually appealing aesthetics and available V6 engine made it a popular choice for those seeking an affordable and stylish sports car. It stood out due to its distinctive "fastback" roofline.
The Good

The 2003 Eclipse offers a striking design that appeals emotionally. The GT/GTS models provide decent performance with the V6 engine. Practically, it's an affordable sports car with reasonable fuel efficiency in the 4-cylinder models. While not exceptionally reliable, it can be a good value for the price, offering a sporty look and feel.

The Bad

Watch out for potential transmission issues, especially in the automatic models. Some owners have reported electrical problems and oil leaks. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. The interior materials can feel cheap, and the rear seats are cramped. Check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse, like many cars of its age, has some frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission, are a common concern. Slipping gears, rough shifting, and complete transmission failure have been reported. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the power windows/locks, are also noted. Oil leaks, especially around the valve cover gaskets, are relatively frequent. Rust, particularly in areas with salted roads, is a long-term concern affecting body panels and undercarriage components. Interior quality is another issue; the plastic trim can crack and fade over time. There were some recalls issued for certain years of the Eclipse regarding airbags and fuel leaks, so checking the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recalls is crucial. Long-term reliability can be impacted by neglecting regular maintenance, especially oil changes and transmission fluid flushes. Premature wear of suspension components is also reported.

How long will the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report the car lasting 15-20 years with diligent care. However, neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. The engine itself is generally durable, but the transmission and electrical systems are weaker points. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing rust promptly are crucial for long-term durability. The chassis can become prone to corrosion over time, especially in regions with harsh weather. Expect increased maintenance costs as the car ages, even with good maintenance habits.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse offered basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims (GT/GTS) offered upgraded audio systems, sometimes with a cassette player or a multi-disc CD changer. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, as these technologies were not common at the time. Safety features included front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional on some trims and standard on others. Traction control was available on some models.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. The NHTSA gave the Eclipse generally good marks for frontal and side-impact protection. The IIHS ratings may vary depending on the specific test year and criteria. Optional features included a sunroof, leather seats, and fog lights. Overall, the tech was basic by modern standards, focusing on providing a pleasant driving experience with limited frills. Safety was adequate for the time, but far less advanced than current vehicles.

2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse ranged from approximately $17,000 for the base RS model to $25,000 for a fully loaded GTS. Currently, used market prices range from around $2,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Eclipse has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, maintenance history, and trim level (GT/GTS models tend to hold slightly more value). Low mileage examples with extensive service records will fetch the highest prices.

2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse are relatively low due to its age and value. Fuel costs are moderate, especially for the 4-cylinder models. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if the car requires significant repairs to the transmission or electrical systems. Long-term ownership costs can be unpredictable due to the potential for unexpected breakdowns and the need for specialized parts. While fuel costs are reasonable, potential repairs make it less economical than some other vehicles.

How Does the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed with cars like the Honda Civic Si, Acura RSX, Toyota Celica, and Hyundai Tiburon. In terms of performance, the Eclipse GTS offered comparable power to the Civic Si and Celica GT-S, but the handling wasn't as refined. The Acura RSX offered a more upscale feel and better reliability. Feature-wise, the Eclipse was generally on par with its competitors, offering similar levels of equipment. However, the Eclipse lags behind in reliability, particularly compared to the Honda and Toyota. The Hyundai Tiburon was a similar competitor in terms of price and styling, but also suffered from reliability concerns.
For a similar sporty coupe with better reliability, the Honda Civic Si or Toyota Celica are better alternatives. The Acura RSX offers a more refined driving experience and higher build quality, though at a slightly higher price point. If styling is the primary concern, the Eclipse might still be appealing, but be prepared for potential maintenance costs. Overall, reliability gives the Honda and Toyota an edge in the long run.

Final Verdict: Is the 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?

The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for someone seeking an affordable and stylish sports coupe, who's willing to accept potential reliability issues. It's worth buying *only* if you find a well-maintained example with comprehensive service records and a clean bill of health. Prioritize GT or GTS trims for the more powerful V6 engine, but factor in potentially higher maintenance costs. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Given its age, it's not a practical daily driver for those needing absolute reliability. It might be a good project car or a weekend cruiser for someone mechanically inclined and willing to address potential issues.

2003 Mitsubishi eclipse GT Spyder.

2003 Mitsubishi eclipse GT Spyder. The fact that you see these cars, and those alike on the road 20 YEARS, after production, is because it's reliable. Generally speaking a lot has to go wrong in these cars before they just kick the bucket. However, preventative maintenance is highly important, getting fluids changed. It's a terrific car, and is a sight for sore eyes for others

One of a kind.

Modified sports car, a lot of carbon fiber. After market tires, rims, stereo, spoiler, lambo doors and a performance exhaust system. Car has never seen rain or snow and is fast.

I would have kept it if I didn’t go home

Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder gts 2003 I’ve owned this car for three great years, I would take it back home with me if I could but I couldn’t. I moved from Seattle WA a month ago! I towed the car I didn’t drive it! The car still has WA display. It’s a really good sport baby car. I’ve installed an Exhaust, to give it a nice noise, still have the original one!

You pay for what you get

Well, I bought a 2003 Mitsubishi eclipse gs about a month ago, it has been rebuilt, and.. it's been good to me so far, I've had to replace a few things and address a few problems, but only because of the vehicle sitting for a period of time, and being rebuilt and stuff. The car is great, its quick, it takes turns with ease, and it feels like you're driving on velvet I should say. Although with age, the dashboard seems to be brittle and to crack easily, the metal interior under the dash can rust easily, the struts on the trunk are not reliable, they will go out eventually, but can be replaced. The car is highly modifiable, and can be rebuilt with time and money. The car overall can be reliable for as long as you want it, for as long as you take care of it. This car is a true jdm enthusiast's dream. The slick exterior is very.. unique in it's own way, and it pops out like a sore thumb, and is not widely seen on the roads. It grabs attention anywhere it goes, along with respect I believe. I dont think the car is worth more than a grand, depending on the shape it's in, but it's worth as much as you want it, and I will always recommend it.

Good commuter car.

I got this car as a quick buy cause I needed a car. It was on its last leg, but through proper maintenance I managed to get almost another four years out of the car. I did modify the car and if someone was looking for and easy car to modify I would recommend this one as a beginner and learner car.
