The 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty coupe and convertible that's part of the third generation (2000-2005). It was known for its sleek styling and available V6 engine. Key trims included the RS, GS, GT, and GTS. At the time, prices ranged from around $18,000 to $25,000 new. Its aggressive looks and relatively affordable price made it popular among younger buyers looking for a stylish and fun car.
The Good

The 2004 Eclipse offered a stylish design that appealed emotionally. The V6 engine provided decent performance. From a practical standpoint, it was relatively affordable and offered reasonable fuel efficiency with the 4-cylinder engine. It provided a comfortable ride for a sporty coupe, though some found the rear seats cramped. Good value for money was a key advantage.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2004 Eclipse include potential electrical issues, particularly with the ECU and sensors. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission. Rust can also be a problem, especially in areas with harsh winters. Check for oil leaks and timing belt maintenance history on the V6 models. The rear visibility is limited.

What Problems Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse include issues with the car's electrical system. Specifically, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and various sensors are prone to failure, leading to drivability problems and diagnostic trouble codes. Owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, experiencing slipping or harsh shifting, especially in models with higher mileage. Rust is a significant concern, especially in regions where road salt is used during winter months. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Oil leaks are also common, particularly around the valve covers and oil pan on V6 models. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to prevent more serious problems. Timing belt replacement is crucial on the V6 engine, typically around 60,000 miles, to avoid catastrophic engine damage. There have been recalls related to airbag systems and fuel tank issues in certain model years; it's important to check the vehicle's VIN with Mitsubishi to ensure all recall work has been completed. Long-term reliability can be a concern if regular maintenance is neglected. Premature wear of suspension components, brake issues, and cooling system problems have also been reported.

How long will the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse can last for 200,000 miles or more. Many examples can still be found on the road with well over 150,000 miles. However, long-term durability depends heavily on the owner's maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timing belt replacements will significantly shorten the lifespan. Weaknesses over time include rust, electrical problems, and wear of suspension components. Regular inspections and addressing issues promptly are key to maximizing the car's lifespan. The timing belt on the V6 is a major concern and should be inspected and replaced on schedule.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse's built-in tech was fairly basic for its time. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims, like the GTS, offered an upgraded Infinity audio system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars; ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) was available, but there were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring.

Safety features included front airbags and side airbags were optional. Optional features included a sunroof, leather seats (GTS), and upgraded wheels.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. The Eclipse generally performed adequately in frontal crash tests, but side-impact protection was often rated lower. Always check the specific model year and configuration for the most accurate safety information. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings may also provide further insight into crash performance. Overall, safety features were standard for the early 2000s, but lack the advanced technology found in newer vehicles.

2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse ranged from around $18,000 for the base RS model to approximately $25,000 for the top-of-the-line GTS. Currently, used market prices vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them priced anywhere from $2,000 to $7,000. Depreciation has been significant due to the car's age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free is crucial), maintenance history, and mileage. Low mileage, well-maintained examples, especially the GTS trim, command higher prices. Demand for sporty coupes of this era also influences value.

2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Eclipse are relatively affordable, especially for older drivers. Fuel costs are moderate, particularly with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance can be more costly than some other vehicles due to potential electrical and mechanical issues. Repairs can also be expensive if major components like the transmission or ECU fail. Long-term ownership costs are average, but diligent maintenance is critical to avoid costly repairs. It's not the most economical car to own due to potential repair bills.

2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse competed against vehicles like the Honda Civic Si, Acura RSX, Toyota Celica, and Hyundai Tiburon. Compared to the Civic Si and Acura RSX, the Eclipse's handling wasn't as sharp, and its build quality and reliability were generally considered lower. The Toyota Celica offered similar sporty styling but was also known for better reliability. The Hyundai Tiburon was a closer competitor in terms of price and styling, but the Eclipse often had the edge in perceived performance with the V6 engine.

In terms of features, the Eclipse was competitive, especially in the GTS trim, with its leather seats and upgraded audio. However, its overall build quality and interior materials were not as refined as the Honda or Acura. If reliability is a primary concern, the Honda Civic Si or Acura RSX would be better alternatives. If you're looking for a similar sporty coupe with a focus on style and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs, the Eclipse can be a decent choice. The Nissan 350Z, while more expensive, offers significantly better performance and a more engaging driving experience, making it an alternative for buyers prioritizing performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse a Good Hatchback?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse is ideal for someone looking for a stylish and affordable sporty coupe and who doesn't mind potentially higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a clean title and a thorough pre-purchase inspection. The GTS trim is more desirable due to its additional features, but be prepared for potential V6-related maintenance. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. It's a good choice for a first car or a fun weekend vehicle, but not ideal if reliability and low running costs are your top priorities. Weigh the risks carefully and be prepared for potential repairs.

Great car

Still turning heads after nearly 20 years. People often ask if I would sell it even though it's not for sale. The automated convertible top is easy (I have had others that were not), and low profile wheels are stylish and finding parking ANYWHERE is a breeze. My Toyota convertible was a 2-seater and having a back seat is amazingly convenient for a girls night out or just cruising. This car loves the sunshine but it has also seen some snow with no issues. Fun, fast, reliable and great gas mileage? This is the best car I've ever owned.

An incredibly underappreciated package in modern t

I currently own one of these cars, an 04 GS 5 spd manual, and have also had extensive experience driving an 01 GS auto, an 04 GS auto, and an 08 GS auto. I've quite impressively broken traffic laws on many occasions with the 2.4 liter I4. One thing to note is none of the cars I had access to were below 180k miles and the 01 made it to 260k with no major repairs before it was sold to a junkyard. These cars (and even more so the 2.4l engines) are insanely capable for the price point you can find them at, and with proper maintenance or even better, a passion for improvement, they will hold up to whatever you can throw at them and come back begging for more. If you take anything from this though, my main tip is to look a little harder for one with a 5 speed. It's the last and best of all that I've had access to.

the absolute best.

i own two cars, a ‘12 mazda3 and an ‘04 eclipse GTS. one’s my commuter car. guess which. disregard the fact that i’m a 3G enthusiast — the GTS is absolutely incredible. bought it as a college graduation gift for myself, and so far it’s better than my degree. 210 horses at 5750 rpms. you’ll hit 80 before you can bat an eye, so be careful on those turns. even with some suspension issues (it’s 16 years old ... i mean, i recall my knees beginning to hurt then 🤔) it drives like a dream. people will make their opinions known that it’s an old car that’s nothing compared to today’s sports cars, but disregard them. this car is ridiculously powerful, incredibly light, and it owns the road no matter where you are. take good care of the baby and it’ll treat you right. the exterior is mean lookin’ and so so cool. comfortable to drive for hours on end, which you’ll want to do. interior stylings are majorly up-to-date, even by 2020 standards. if you’re an audiophile like me, get an aftermarket stereo ... or don’t. the engine is almost better than the tunes 🙂 if you’ve been thinking about it, get this car. keep it as a second car if that’s sensible for you, or use it as your day-to-day. baby it. wash it every weekend. take care of that oil. take care of the suspension. super low maintenance if you’re good to it. drive it hard when you want. take it in the mountains and get it screaming at 100. the 24-valve 3.0L V6 is nothing to scoff at. you’ll be moving faster than you’ve ever moved, and you’ll love every minute.

I think everyone who owns one of these sports cars usually don't really take care of them, at least all the ones I've seen in my time but there are some goodies out there. If I had the money I would totally repair this car even though its not profitable at all.

Honda crx until the 04 Mitsubishi eclipse gts V6

yes this a great stock car but the aftermarket parts are cheap like the body kits from 200. to 1400 pretty much everything bolt on turbos that add 600hp i have a built buget of 8 of 10,000.dollars for mine if u r going do aftermarket parts type in parts for your eclipse dont worry they all same brand name the wrong website can coast u up to 800 or more the same part these car r really nice and fast with a Little money put in to them looks maybe one thing but always start with the motor and transmission build exhaust your that means pick your headers muffles and exhaust tip size then take the car with all that to a muffler shop then pick your pipe size and if dual exhaust system do it.The eclipse gts is a great all around and ride like caddy down the road even doing 130 mph but i do wish it was the spider gts v6 hard top loved that car if anyone needs help or questions email me

WOW

I bought my 04 Mitsubishi eclipse a little over 8 months ago, and in all honesty I LOVE IT. Every used car out there requires the average oil change and new pair of brakes, but beyond that my car runs like a champ! I have the spyder addition, and just replaced the top. I would personaly avoid a convertible version for the only reason that used convertibles require a brand new top. AN AMAZING FIRST CAR, AND MAYBE NEWER VERSION SECOND CAR. in addition this car is AMAZING at turns. Treat her like a BABY, and she'll treat you like ROYALTY.
